The explanation of selected art schools of the second half of nineteenth century should anchor this phenomenon in the history of literature. The thesis analysis the concrete cases selected from the primary texts (collection of poems Zazděná okna, prose Román o Manfredu Macmillenovi and drama Sen o říši krásy). This analysis is based on the various types od synesthesia. The analysis prooved that this phenomenon does not only exist in the world literature, but it also exists in the Czech literature of that age. The comparison of the results extracted by Sean A. Day, Ph.D. was very interesting. This thesis examines also the colours and seing of the colours in the dreams. The work of Svetozar Nevole showed up useful. Although the work is almost 50 years younger than the primary literature, there were no big problems with adaptation of this theory for the primary texts.
The Contrast of life and death in works of J. K. Šlejhar
Krčálová, Tereza ; Heczková, Libuše (advisor) ; Mravcová, Marie (referee)
The thesis focuses on J. K. Šlejhar's literary work from two points of view. The first part introduces Šlejhar's work in the contemporary literary context as a result of a synthesis of new literary styles. In the second part the thesis concentrates on a textual analysis and reconstruction of the author's "artistic world". The first part of the thesis gives insight into the contemporary discussions aimed at revising and redefining the function of art with respect to the new development in society and new human needs. The critical reception of realism and naturalism and the reflection of the then wide-spread adoption of new influences from foreign literatures are also dicussed. To draw a comparison, we quote both period and current studies dealing with J. K. Šlejhar's work. Thereby we want to demonstrate the changing requirements of literature and art and the changing perception of a literary work throughout time. The second part of the thesis comprises the textual analysis of Šlejhar's selected writings from the point of view of semiotic literary theory and the reconstruction of the author's "artistic world". Such approach enables us to draw comparisons to Russian literature of the 19th century, primarily with the works of N. V. Gogol and F. M. Dostoyevsky, and to discover a common basis for both...
Jan Toorop and Czech Art
Pražanová, Kristýna ; Lahoda, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Wittlich, Petr (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the Dutch painter of Javanese descent, Jan Toorop (1858- 1928), and the traces of his influence in the Czech art scene. The first part contains the biography of this prominent Dutch painter, who arrived in the Netherlands at the age of 13. In the early 1880s, he went to Brussels to study, and participated in the cultural life there. During his life he spent several longer periods of time in England, where his wife Annie Hall came from. His name is closely associated with places like Amsterdam, Katwijk aan Zee, Domburg, Nijmegen, and The Hague, where he died. The second part deals with Toorop's artwork in which we can find realistic, impressionistic, as well as pointillistic works. But his probably most important work was created in his period of symbolism. After 1900, his artwork took on the style of mystical Catholicism. The last part of this thesis deals with Toorop's artwork in the context of Czech art scene and makes an attempt to find possible parallels between his work and the work of Czech artists.
Jan Opolský and his prosaic work in temporary literary context
Horčíková, Lucie ; Mravcová, Marie (advisor) ; Merhaut, Luboš (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to define Jan Opolský′s prosaic works with emphasis put on his evident inspiration through fine arts. The work of Jan Opolský does not exceed limits of a short stories. It almost falls short of an action. The predominant feature would be reflexion and visual description. That is especially the case with voluminious parts devoted to the bright light and the color nuances - with their changing expresions and diverse shades reflected on the presented object of art. The whole momentum of his prosaic work tends to be included in exactly these parts of his ouvre. In his writing, Opolský uses his skills he earned as a craftsman and as an expert in various artistic fields. Because of his obsession with the world of art, he can be considered a good example of a decadent artist. A number of his texts, especially given these features it is focusing on, have symbolic legitimacy anyway.

The main goal of this thesis is to analyze the decadent dramatic masterpiece. At first at my work, I was concentrated on description of decadence and other directions of modernism, which of the related, such as Impressionism and Symbolism. Then I donated the description of decadent direction in Bohemia, but also in other countries, especially in France and England. Of course I even didn't forget even the most important decadent writers in these countries. Next, I described the characteristics of the decadent drama, mentioned the important authors and their works, and I finally dismantled dramatic literary works of Jiří Karásek from Lvovice, Cesare Borgia and Apollonius z Tyany. I focused mainly on the decadent, secession and the symbolist characters in these works. I have included in this analysis, descriptions of scenery and decadent tuning, descriptions of characters and I also dismantled each act in which I was looking for motives of decadence.

Theological Mysticism and Symbolism in the Piece "Méditations sur le Mystere de la Sainte Trinité" by Olivier Messiaen
Salvová, Pavla ; POPELKA, Josef (advisor) ; TŮMA, Jaroslav (referee)
The general attribute of Olivier Messiaen´s music is not only his specific musical language, which experiments with time, rhythm, colour, finds inspiration in birdsong, Gregorian chant and music of the exotic lands, but mainly the existence of a non-musical message. The first part of my thesis is introductory. It includes the description of Messiaen´s life and early musical influences, the nature of his musical style, his general musical aims, and an overview of his most important works. In the centre of my effort is the thematic analysis of Messiaen´s late organ cycle Méditations sur le Mystère de la Sainte Trinité (Meditations on the Mystery of the Holy Trinity). That is preceded with an introduction of the background of the piece, sources of inspiration and symbolism used. The main aim is to explore the complexity of Messiaen´s musical and thematic thinking, and to understand the message of the musical material.
