Subtitles heuristics

Original idea on this project comes from Khanova škola. This group of people is translating educational videos from Khan Academy and they would like to have an automatic tool, which will check their created subtitles. Character of this check relates with format of subtitles in general (time of beginning, ending, etc.) and also with Czech language and textual form of language. Within the scope of this thesis was developed software, which loads subtitles in SubRip format, on this loaded file analysis is executed and results are returned in XML or JSON format. Whole application is modular and has one main component (control program) and then several modules (plugins). These modules have one area of functioning, in which they execute analysis on subtitle objects. Plugins itself are realised by dynamic libraries, which are dynamicaly loaded on run-time. Thanks to that, application is simply extensible and new plugins can be added without necessity of re-compiling control program. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Amateur versus Professional Subtitling of Swedish movies

This master thesis deals with audiovisual translation with an emphasis on subtitles. In particular, it concentrates on the widespread phenomenon of amateur interlingual subtitling (fansubbing) using the Swedish feature movie Let the Right One In (Låt den rätte komma in) as material. In the theoretical part, the specifics of film subtitling are addressed: the most frequently used subtitling strategies and proceedings and the differences between professional and amateur subtitling in the single stages of the subtitling process - production, distribution and reception of subtitles and also translators' motivation and working conditions. In the empirical part, an analysis of Swedish audiovisual material is carried out, followed by an analysis of the respective professional and amateur-produced subtitles. The focus is on applied subtitling strategies, transfer of culture-specific items and marked speech, but also formal features of both subtitle types are discussed. In the course of the analysis, the current subtitling norms are taken into consideration, as well as the different socio-cultural context and distinctions between the Czech and the Swedish language. In the conclusion, the quality of the researched subtitles is assessed.

Commented translantion of an audiovisual track from Dutch to Czech

(english) The aim of this bachelor thesis is the translating and subtitling of a short Dutch documentary film for youth. Concretely it was the 97th part of the program BioBits. This film is about genes and their role in evolution. The translation was done from Dutch to Czech. The author had to transcribe the spoken Dutch text and analyze it. He has used the analytical methods of Christiane Nord for this purpose. The choice of the translational strategies and the solving of concrete translational problems are patterned on the preceding analysis of the text. The author relied mainly on the strategies of Andrew Chesterman and Jiří Levý. The typology of the translational problems and their solutions are demonstrated on the concrete examples from the text. The translated text was condensed by the author in order to make the subtitles. He outlined the procedure of condensing by way of the concrete examples relying on the work of Miroslav Pošta. That was necessary to overcome the differences between the spoken and written language and the limitation of space and time which are so typical for subtitling. Elimination of Barriers in Programmes of Czech Television for People with a Hearing Disability

(in English): This bachelor thesis deals with closed subtitles as a means to remove barriers in terms of access to programmes broadcasted by Czech Television for viewers with hearing disabilities. The theoretical part provides a general view at the target audience and their communication specifics that may affect their closed subtitles usage. Attention is also paid to the statutory framework which sets out the obligation to provide a certain percentage of broadcasted programmes with closed subtitles and to the extent of fulfillment of the legal obligations. The possibilities of providing pre-recorded programmes with closed subtitles are discussed as well. The practical part reports a research probe focused on the satisfaction of hearingimpaired viewers with services of Czech Television.

Computer games - a phenomenon in translation

The topic of computer/video games and their translation has only recently attracted attention of translation scholars. The thesis aims at introducing the phenomenon as a legitimate topic of translation studies, presenting it as a specific and influential medium with an extensive user subculture. A description of the overall process of game localization, and specifically its practice in the Czech Republic are included. Lexical analysis of selected computer game reviews and online discussions is complemented with a questionnaire survey to reveal if and how computer games and game- focused articles influence the constitution of a characteristic sociolect and its usage outside the gamer subculture. Concepts used in intercultural and interlingual transfer of computer games are defined and compared with established terms in translation studies. A comparative analysis of original and Czech versions of two computer games is carried out to identify translation methods used in the transfer of culture- and language-specific elements in order to determine whether the process of computer game translation exhibits any specific features that may justify the introduction of new terms into translation studies. The Pragmatics of English Tag Questions in Translation

This thesis explores the pragmatics of English tag questions in translation by analyzing their pragmatic function. Our approach is based on the theoretical assumption that Czech lacks straightforward linguistic counterparts of English tag questions. The quantitative and qualitative corpus-based research strives to produce interesting findings about possible relations between pragmatic function, polarity and the form of tag questions in English, original Czech and translated Czech texts. Therefore, we propose and verify several hypotheses about these relations. This thesis broadens theoretical knowledge about tag questions by contributing to research on translation universals and improves translation practice by presenting translators with a paradigm, i.e., a class of possible solutions to the problem of translating English tag questions into Czech.

The Language of Subtitles in Translations from Norwegian

The aim of this thesis is to analyse translations of audiovisual material from Norwegian to Czech. The theoretical part of the thesis discusses audiovisual translation in general, with special emphasis on subtitling. Strategies and concepts significant for the translation of subtitles are described, as well as different aspects of the quality of their translation. The empirical part analyses firstly the audiovisual material itself (the Headhunters movie) and consequently analyses the translation strategies and solutions used in the translation. The analysis is based on Lomheim's model. The translation of marked speech, culturally bound elements and humor is also discussed. Finally, the quality of translation is assessed. Parallel Corpus Manager

The goal of diploma project was to implement parallel corpus manager, which can align parallel texts in different languages and insert them into corpus, where several more processing functions are provided. Program provides possibilities of automatic text alignment and its interactive editing. These aligned texts are then inserted into corpus. Program can work with multiple corpora, parallel corpus is allways identified by a couple of languages. In corpus, there are possibilities to search by many categories, view and edit particular selections, lemmatize and morphologically tag given texts, sort selections, import and export data, in many ways edit corpus for further easy navigation and add new expressions to managed dictionaries. Particular chapters describe introduction to corpus problematics, theory of aligning parallel texts, morphological text tagging and lemmatization, external tools used in program, most common subtitle formats and implementation solution of particular problems.

Automatic Data Recording of Digital Satellite Broadcast

This work aims at the creation of a~system of massive recording of multimedia data, especially speech data in various languages. The first issue is to find out high quality data source, the second is to build the system for managing and storing received data in the digital form. A digital satellite transmission is chosen as a signal source (DVB-S system). Main system features include recording of multiple streams in parallel, support of multiple cards, retrieving and storing of additional information (from Internet) and scheduling of recordings. The system will provide massive amounts of data for training of a language identification system.
