Jörg Haider's impact on the Austrian Free Party (FPÖ)

This bachelor's thesis deals with the impact of Jörg Haider on the development and changes of Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) mainly in the time of his chairmanship of the party on the federal level between the years 1986 and 2000, when the small party, troubled by infighting between the German-nationalist and the liberal wing, gradually transformed into a practically unified right-wing populist party. The aim of this thesis is to define the influence Haider had on his party given the party's exponential rise in popularity, a trend that culminated in the federal election of 1999, where the FPÖ won a staggering 26,9 % of votes. The research therefore focuses on Haider's personality and party governance, which includes his way of making decisions within the party, pushing through his ideas, dealing with the opposition of his party colleagues, and, last but not least, his political and ideological directing of the party. Haider's behaviour within the party, and in public, is also analysed in the thesis, with regards to the behaviour of the other members of the FPÖ. The thesis also deals with other time periods of Haider's life and the FPÖ's existence. Party Politics in Intercivilisational Encounters : The Modernity Cleavage

(Hons) Party Politics in Intercivilisational Encounters: The Modernity Cleavage Abstract The thesis presents an extension of the Lipset - Rokkan model of cleavage-based party politics. It employs concepts of civilisational analysis, particularly the concept of multiple modernities as devised by Shmuel Eisenstadt, to describe the emergence of anti-Western fundamental movements in Russia and Egypt at the start of the 20th century. The introductory chapter discusses the existing literature and recent trends in mainstream studies of party politics, noting particularly the divergence between research into Western and non-Western political parties. The second chapter focuses on the Rokkanian branch of party studies and the use of the cleavage concept outside the political region of Western Europe. In the third chapter, the concept of 'modernity cleavage' is presented, based on theoretical assumptions common both to the Rokkanian agenda and to civilisational analysis. The fourth and fifth chapters deal with the empirical analysis of two cases, the Russian Communists and Egyptian Muslim Brothers, respectively, with the goal to extract findings from presented historical data through a basic-level comparative and ground-theoretical approach. Party-based euroscepticism in the scheme of Civic democratic party

The aim of this paper is to analyze main approaches in the study of euroscepticism and to categorize them into the definition of Party-based euroscepticism which based on criteria defined to apply the theory to a particular political party. I will prove this in the example of the Civic democratic party. From these observations it will be obvious that euroscepticism in Central and East European countries is typical mainly for right-wing parties. ODS is a typical example of a right-wing euroscepticism political party which can be applied to the theory presented. I will empirically refer to the development of party's attitude in various time periods. As far a s the content itself is considered it is interesting to observe a difference between the party's preferences and the emphasis which supports the euroscepticism approach.
