The focus of this work is the translation of two articles from Investigating Firefly and Serenity: Science Fiction on the Frontier, an anthology of essays and articles from various authors and researches specializing in the humanities. The two selected articles focus on dystopic tradition and feminism. An annotation of the translation from the perspective of translation theory forms the second part of this work: it contains the original text analysis based on the model of Christiane Nord, and describes the translation method and problems as well as their solutions and the typology of translation shifts. Body Modification in Cyberpunk,

The rigorous thesis Body Modification in Cyberpunk, Cyberpunk in Body Modification examines the intersection of these two topics from their mutual perspectives and monitors the extent to which they influence and shape each other. In its first part, the author deals with the representation, form and role of body modification in selected works of cyberpunk literature. The issue analysis is carried out by means of combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches. The author quantitatively evaluates 503 mentions of body modifications on a given sample of 7 major cyberpunk literary works, using 25 variables. The qualitative analysis, structured in 7 thematic areas, amplifies the qualitative findings. From the analysis results, the author draws definition of typical cyberpunk body modification, which she describes as invasive functional modification of the body that was created with the help of modern technologies. Based on this definition, in the second part of this rigorous thesis, the author focuses on the existing body modifications that meet these aspects. She creates 7 categories of functional cyberpunk body modifications, which she illustrates by examples. The Czech sci-fi comic of the 21st century in the context of world production

The topic of the submitted thesis: "The Czech sci-fi comic of the 21st century in the context of world production" are impacts of the world-known comics artists, both French and American ones, on the comic books of the science fiction genre published by Czech authors after the year 2000. The thesis is focused on artist´s sources of inspiration, the motives and features they work with, as well as on basic elements that make up their individuality and their unique style. Based on this summarization and analysis, an evaluation of standing and contributions of Czech comics artists to the comics media are made. The greatest attention is given to Jan Bažant, Jiří Grus and Michal Menšík who have been the leading figures of the domestic comics scenes of the science fiction genre.
The development of fantastic literature, its latest trends and its role in the Czech libraries and in the Czech market

The bachelor's thesis focuses on the historical development of fiction as a literary genre, from the early modern period to the present. This trend is observed in the Czech Republic and abroad. Besides the development we can find here as well the definitions of particular genres. The thesis then examines how public libraries are facing to the current trend of popularity of the fiction. The problems associated with the description of documents, construction of the fund, and acquisition are mentioned as well as benefits from the popularity of the genre - when libraries use fiction to their promotion. The conclusion briefly surveys current state of the book market and its share which is occupied by the fiction. In the supplement a brief list of fiction subgenres can be found.
Annotated translation: Nightmares and Wonders

The aim of the first part of this thesis is to translate the introduction of the book Investigating Farscape called Nightmares and Wonders. The second part contains a commentary of this translation. It focuses on the analysis of the source text, its principle problems for translation, on description of the applied method of translation and finally on shifts that occurred in the translation.

The elements of horror in the stories of Ray Bradbury

This thesis deals with the interpretation of the horror elements in the short stories of Ray Bradbury. The theoretical part describes the main features of the Gothic novel and the links between this literary tradition and the genre of science fiction (e.g. the role of the novel Frankenstein). The practical part deals with the particular themes of Bradbury's stories: (the loss of identity, alienation, the role of memory, the fear of death, the presence of mystery). The thesis also deals with the way Bradbury evokes suspense and the atmosphere of horror.
The Theme of the Other World in Douglas Adams´ series The Hitchhiker´s Guide to the Galaxy

This thesis deals with the interpretation and analysis of Adams' series The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (1979) with regard to crucial themes of journey and space as "the other" world. The theoretical introduction will be dedicated to reflection on the meaning of these themes within the science fiction genre. The analysis itself will focus on the particular motifs in Adams' work, the use of irony, the characteristics of the main characters and the function of the environment.
Discoursive Changes of Czech Sci-fi in the Context of 20th Century

This diploma is concerned with an analysis of the czech science fiction in a context of the 20th century with a regard to the period translations of english, american and soviet Sci - fi into Czech. The theoratical part will be devoted to a definition of the terms used in this work, mainly of term Science Fiction, with a try to a determination of a proper methodology of my research. There will be shortly dealed the progress of the american Science fiction in this part. The main content of this diploma will be an analysis of the speech of chosen texts from the era of the 30th till 80th years. In the conclusion there will be defined the changes of the language used in the genre of Science Fiction in a relation to the changes of epistemological horizon of the era based on these analytical probes.
The Newest Czech Fantasy Literature

This bachelor thesis deals with contemporary czech fantasy literature. In the first part, basic terms like "fantastics", "fantasy" etc will be explained. There is also a chapter about history of the fantasy genre in world and Czech literature. The second part of my paper is focused on authors whose work has began approximately in last twenty years. I also try to elaborate on individual authors' creative styles. Lastly, a special chapter on teenage authors, writing mostly for children and other teenagers, is included.
