Role Playing within the English Lessons at the Primary School

The aim of this diploma work is to show possibilities of a role play in teaching english, using different methods of drama in education, which leads pupils to deeper understanding and starting the work and its influence of pupil's experience and pupil's taking part in solving problems with the situation and remembering cognitive and emotional benefits of a role play afterwards to motivate pupils for next learning. This diploma work describes aims and methods of nowdays ways of teaching foreign languages, explains new trends in teaching young learners (primary school). It describes their psychological development in age 6 to 11 and try to explain how it has an influence in teaching languages at primary schools. It causes the main differences between teaching adults and young learners. Teaching languages through methods of drama in education brings different approach to teaching. It develops teaching in two levels - in cognitive knowledge and in emotional experiences.
Radio role play: possibilities and limitations of use of fictional radio broadcast in English language teaching

This dissertation thesis focuses on the use of drama in English language teaching. In the theoretical part the field of drama in ELT is elaborated in terms of its principles, methods and examples of practical use. Based on the outlined theoretical basis the technique radio role play is introduced. The main aim of the thesis was to identify and verify possibilities and limitations of the technique applied in English language teaching. To meet the aim of the thesis action research was used as the research design employing a range of data collection methods, e.g. questionnaires with pupils; interviews with pupils, teachers and critical friends. Content analysis was used to process the collected data and the analysis was further interpreted with the support of contextual information regarding educational setting in which the research was carried out and contextual material (lesson plans, teaching material, audio and video recordings). Within the four cycles of action research initial hypotheses, which were formulated before the actual research, were verified. The research findings show that the radio role playing contributes to the development of speaking as a language skill (mainly fluency and spontaneity of speech), improvisation skills, creativity and non-verbal communication. Use of drama activities and role play in Maturita Solutions - Intermediate

This master thesis deals with interconnection of language teaching and drama. It presents a set of supplementary drama activities to the textbook Maturita Solutions-Intermediate. The concern is the use of drama activities in second language teaching at secondary school; for this purpose the set of drama activities and role-plays was carried out in several classes at two secondary schools in Prague. The theoretical part presents the methods, which emphasize the importance of communicative abilities, and provides a background to the idea that drama is one of the ways of teaching a second language. The practical part introduces the created activities and their pilotage at schools and the work is concluded with a feedback from the students and the teachers who participated. Teaching french as a foreign language using drama techniques

This work deals with prospective method of teaching French as a foreign language through drama in education. It resumes different approaches of language teaching in the second half of 20th century. It puts drama methods into the context of language teaching. In present time, these methods are marginal in language teaching in the Czech Republic. However, their relevance becomes clear since the action learning is valued in language teaching. Next section of the work is devoted to analysis of an original French book used as a basis for an educational project called Paris. Furthermore, the work describes personal pedagogical experience with a group of high school students on a project pursuing the topic of Paris city. The project is focused on developing communicative competences of Czech students learning French using methods of drama in education such as role playing and improvisation. This work is thus an example of specific use of methods described above.
