Dvořáková, Žaneta ; Harvalík, Milan (advisor) ; Šrámek, Rudolf (referee) ; Krško, Jaromír (referee)
Introduction to Literary Onomastics Abstract Žaneta Dvořáková Czech onomastics has been traditionally well advanced; it has a high-quality theoretical and methodological foundation and is highly regarded internationally. However, unlike in other countries, literary onomastics as one of its disciplines still lacks sufficient attention. R. Šrámek - along with his counterparts abroad, K. Gutschmidt and W. F. H. Nicolaisen - points out its terminological and methodological inconsistency, insufficient theoretical elaboration and the problem of defining its scope of research. It is this call that I want to answer with my dissertation. The goal of my Introduction To Literary Onomastics is to provide a critical and complex summary and assessment of the current understanding of literary proper names and to further research the subject - especially by extending its scope with some new views of anthroponyms in fiction based on profound analyses of modern works of Czech and foreign literature of the 19th and 20th century. My research builds upon methodological-theoretical findings reached by the development of both Czech and foreign literary onomastics; at the same time, it draws on the latest findings of general onomastic theory. Excerpted works purposely represent a wide variety of literary genres, which allows us to...
Biblical personal names in Czech Sign Language
Matušková, Marie ; Petráňová, Romana (advisor) ; Vaňková, Irena (referee)
(in English): In biblical times, names had their meanings but these days, we (and not only Czechs) do not perceive them anymore. This is one concern. Names in written languages have been translated or transcribed since Septuagint and Vulgata and therefore, their meanings have been beginning to be lost for the readers. They see just sounds in them. What does it mean in the matter of translating the names of biblical people into Czech Sign Language? And what about their meanings? We do not know much. And that is the topic of this thesis, its goal is to discover the origins of biblical people's sign names in Czech Sign Language and to find out their motivation. The thesis is proceeded from language data gathered through video excerption method from Bible bez hranic (Bible without boundaries) and elicitation method done amongst the deaf respondents from two teams (Prague, Brno). Both teams use identical signs due to their cooperation on the translation, which means the resulting sign names for biblical people must be unified, if possible. In Bible bez hranic project, the differences in sign names usage among the Deaf and sign names used in the project happened to be found. This thesis describes these differences and divides the elicitated sign names according to classification done by Radka Faltínová...

Proper Names as a Potential Indicator of "Strangeness" in Translation of Non-literary Texts
Bičíková, Romana ; Králová, Jana (advisor) ; Hoffmannová, Jana (referee)
The subject of this thesis is proper names in Czech and Spanish language and proper names in translation from Spanish into Czech. The theoretical part of the thesis comprises of an overview of the current state of investigation in the field both in Czech and in Spanish. In Czech linguistics, onomastics is a comparatively developed discipline. In Spanish, it is mostly grammatical manuals that deal with proper names. In both languages, authors tend to agree on the definition and classification of proper names into anthroponyms, toponyms and chrematonyms; however, Spanish authors usually do not separate chrematonyms as a category under such name. Furthermore, nobody has yet defined or classified the functions of proper names in Spanish language (an action which has already been done for the Czech language). Opinions on the translation of proper names differ to a large degree. Authors recognize proper names as polyfunctional units and agree that their translation (or non-translation) is in large measure conditioned by norms and specific historically conditioned conventions; by the function of the text, text type and genre; by the relationship of the working languages and so on. Authors also suggest their own set of strategies which can be used in the transfer of proper names from one language into...
