Portrayal of Female Family Members in Selected Works by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the position of women in Nigerian family and to estimate the extent of their emancipation and/or dependence on men in Nigerian society, traditionally considered to be patriarchal. The analysis is based on the interpretation of the novels Purple Hibiscus and Half of a Yellow Sun and the short story collection The Thing around Your Neck, written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, a prominent contemporary Nigerian author. The theoretical part focuses on political, social and economic representations of women in pre- colonial Nigeria and in colonial and modern, post-colonial Nigeria. An antidote to the stereotypical depiction of women in African literature, Adichie's work typically presents female characters who are educated, independent and emancipated. This stands to challenge the image of Nigerian women who are dominated and controlled by men.

Transformation of the approach to the gender roles in magazine Vlasta between 1991 and 2010

The thesis deals with the analysis of two years, namely 1991 and 2010, of the magazine Vlasta made with the gender optics. The aim is to compare thematic structure of the magazine in 1991 and 2010 from gender perspective and identify the central issues which are presented to women. The study is divided into three main sections: theoretical, methodological and analytical. The theoretical part describes the current scientific discourse, including terminological definition of basic concepts. The methodology part describes the research methods used and the analytical section presents the research outputs obtained through open and axial coding, which were used in analysis of the media content. Significant editorial issues, which are associated women in a magazine Vlasta with, have been identified and described.

Wives and Whores: Female characters in the plays of Harold Pinter

This BA thesis discusses four female characters from three plays of the British dramatist Harold Pinter, placing them in context of depicting 'The Femine.' Pinter's female characters must not only be seen in the tradition of stereotypical depicting women, but also in context of the patriarchal concepts they have to face - the male dominance, male gaze and male bonding. The second chapter provides background for discussing female characters - reasons why to do so are provided and the idea of woman as 'the Other' is introduced. This concept led to the stereotyping of women and subsequently to their misrepresentation in fiction. The basic dichotomy of 'wife/whore' is investigated. The chapter also examines the specifics of representation on the stage with references to the development of drama. It concludes with placing Pinter within this context. The third chapter contains close reading of three Pinter's plays - The Homecoming, Old Times and Betrayal. The roles of female characters are examined in relationship to the power structures they are trying to dismantle. The chapter argues that even if they manage it, the victory does not challenge the patriarchal structure as such. The fourth chapter is focused on realisation of Pinter on Czech stages. Representations of femininity in Quentin Tarantino's movies

The submitted thesis is titled Representations of Femininity in Quentin Tarantino's Movies and it focuses on the process of femininity construction in six selected movies both written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. The aim of this study is to identify how Tarantino operates the notions of conventional femininity and traditional female gender roles. Furthermore, it investigates to what extent his films either support or subvert stereotypical gender identities. In relation to the research issues the key concepts are defined by the theoretical part of this work. In particular it describes the theory of social and media construction of reality, gender as construct, film as a part of patriarchal structure or feminist perspectives related to the film production. This same part also offers basic information about Quentin Tarantino's personality and his film works in general. In order to answer the research questions the thesis employs a qualitative method of critical discourse analysis which functions as a helpful tool while reconstructing the image of femininity set by media. Moreover, the selected method serves to reveal latent meanings applied by film as a form of media to affect both behavioural and cognitive individual characteristics. Gender in compulsory reading - Old greek myths and legends: gender analysis of the writing

This thesis Gender in compulsory reading - Old Greek Myths and Legends: Gender analysis of the writing deals with literary representation of gender issues in mentioned writing, written by Eduard Petiška. The very analysis is based on analysing of gender topics and issues we are interested in and focused on. These topics are compared and showed using examples from particular myths and legend. The question whether these topics are influenced by patriarchal order in the society is the crucial for this thesis. Despite the variability of Petiška's writing, which is necessarily caused by variations of ancient and continuously construated stories; some patterns and systems are there to be found and explored by contemporary gender theories, mostly by feministic literature criticism. In this thesis the method of resisting reading according to Judith Fetterley is used. The deconstruction of the text and its hidden values which are based on male domination and the reconstruction of it in order to show the new perspective at the same moment are the main goals of resisting reading. In my work I map the transformation of gender through media editorial in the journal Vlasta topics in 1991 and 2010 and how tthe communist regime influenced the thematic transformation of magazine in Czechoslovakia. In my work I also examine whether Vlasta magazine in 1991, presents a feminist ideas that have a negative connotation, as Osvaldová mentioned. The work is divided into three basic sections of theoretical, methodological and analytical. The theoretical part describes the current scientific discourse and puts the work in a social media context. This section presents the main concepts such as feminism, gender, gender stereotypes and patriarchy. It also mentions the importance of media and women's magazines for the female audience and the transformation of women's role in society before 1989 and after. In the methodological part, through open and axial coding I examine media content. In my research, I identify and describe significant editorial issues with which woman is associated in Vlasta magazine in 1991 and in 2010. Furthermore, using content analysis, I compare the contents of the magazine Vlasta 1991 and 2010 in terms of private and public spheres. Woman as an opponent: manifestations of sexism in magazine Maxim

The central question of this diploma thesis is, whether sexisms is a commonplace phenomenon of our society, how does this phenomenon appears in our public discourse of present-day society and how can we identify it. The diploma thesis searches the answers for this question mainly in theories of radical feminism, which are part of the second feministic wave, in present theories concerning sexism and patriarchy, in present theories about mens` lifestyle magazines and in an empirical research. Radical feminism` theories specify the manifestations of sexism. The current theories unfold the strategies through which is sexism ventilated. The empirical research then includes an analysis of Czech lifestyle magazine for men Maxim, specifically the analysis of 23 articles selected from one complete volume of this magazine, specifically 2012. The method of coding according to Strauss and Corbin was chosen as the key method. Based on the scope of this method (the selective coding part) the central category was identified and named as Women as an opponent. Its characterization and dimensional scales (in form of variable strategies) were defined as well. Women characters in Willa Cather's fiction as a reflection of U.S. women's rights history

Willa Cather (1873-1947) is nowadays regarded as one of the most important U.S. writers, and the volume of critical works, articles and dissertations devoted to her as a person and an artist is immense. One of the problematic relationship has always been, as can be seen from a number of critical essays and books, between Cather and U.S. feminists. The feminists would have liked to include Cather, as an feminist writer, into their group of the first-rate, woman-authored "female canon", however, such intent brought about an important question. Is it possible to regard Willa Cather as a feminist, considering her attacks on other women-writers, and her negative attitude towards the organized women's rights movement? This work's objective is to explore the background of Cather and organized women's rights movement's bizarre relationship, and answer the question above. To find out if Cather's work with its strong heroines empowered or weakened women in general, her novels and stories, rather then facts and assumption about her personal life, are used. The relevant parts of the plots from Cather's fiction are put into the historical perspective of the contemporary U.S. laws, showing that although Cather created exceptional woman characters, she let them deal with the same conditions and problems other...

Czech-Islamic marriages from the viewpoint of gender

The thesis is deal with Czech-Islamic marriages from the viewpoint of gender. The first part characterises the basic concepts, marriage traditions in a purely Czech society, the issue of gender in the Czech marriage, marriage traditions in a truly Islamic society, Islamic marriage, gender issues, gender issues in Czech-Islamic marriage, the ethical impact of migration, including the ethical impact of cultural migration, potential misuse of the Institute to ensure family reunification residence permit in the Czech Republic, an example of migration, with specific policy approach in France. The practical part includes a rationale for selecting the research sample, showing the chosen research methodology. Based on the interviews is confirmed by the hypothesis of the thesis that the cultural influence of gender, as a bearer of a different conception of the of man-woman gender in Islamic culture, and Czech, respectively. Czech-Islamic marriages is a significant factor in causing marital disharmony. Mutual two-way cultural knowledge, as well as the presence of tolerance, love and truth, is a prerequisite to guarantee the functional relationship. This fact is verified by the Czech-Islamic couple, in the final case report.

The Problems of the Nowadays Position of Father in the Family or The Crisis of Parental Identity

The work deals with position of father in the modern-day family. The dominant position of father in family was lost within the empancipation of women inside the society. There become the system of patriarchy. The modern father has lost his position as a breadwinner of family, becouse of women try to assert at labour market too. The modern father has to find the new identity. He falls into split between traditional and modern position of father. In the work there is described the position of father within the period of patriarchy and his positon at the modern-day family. The modern father tries to be more partner than autoritarian and strict father to his children. He wants to join in the family life. The work also deals with the importance of father to be the part of family. The last section is dedicated to influence of father on development of his children, which is connected with looking for their identity.
