Chandigarh - Indian dream of the city

This Bachelor’s Thesis deals with the creation and development of the Indian city of Chandigarh, built on the green field. Its creation was necessitated by major political problems related to the establishment of India as a sovereign nation. The first part explains architectural and urban principles of the world-famous architect Le Corbusier, who was the author of the Master Plan of Chandigarh. Subsequently, the creation and development of Chandigarh is laid out, up to the present. The practical section compares Chandigarh with Amritsar, a traditional Indian city, followed by a study of the present state of selected city sectors, together with an analysis of the land use. The purpose of the Thesis is to present the problems of city construction on the green field, including an analysis of functionality. Given that there is as yet no Czech work dealing with the creation, development, and present state of Chandigarh in a similar extent, this work might be found useful.
Time and Journey in Virginia Woolf's Mrs Dalloway, The Voyage Out, and To the Lighthouse

The aim of this thesis is to analyse Virginia Woolf's novels The Voyage Out, Mrs Dalloway, and To the Lighthouse, and to interpret the reoccurring themes of time and journey in relation to the author's contemporary philosophical and artistic context. It also introduces the theories of Henri Bergson, William James, and Edmund Husserl, which are later applied in the literary analysis. The thesis shows the subjectivity of Woolf's work and attempts to find the main ideas presented to Woolf's reader.
Metafictional novels of the 30s and 40s in the Czech literature

This doctoral thesis focuses on literary texts containing speech acts that are in literary history and theory usually known as self-reflexive. In the first part author attempts to find inspirations for self-reflexivity in a broader historical and cultural European context as well as its potential connections to modernism. Then it tries to find relations between these modernist tendencies and Czech literary production of the day. It also deals with different views of self-reflexivity in the Czech literary theory. After dealing with these perspectives and after analysis of their potential drawbacks, thesis then moves to an attempt to find a precise meaning of self-reflexivity with respect to the term itself. On that account it analyses reflexive philosophy of major philosophers of the 1st half of the 20th century - Edmund Husserl, Jean-Paul Sartre, Martin Heidegger and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. The analysis of relevant works of these philosophers dealing with reflexivity leads to the formulation of a thought-map that embodies evident parallels between self-reflexivity in literature and reflexivity in philosophy. In order to verify these parallels, thesis then focuses on interpretation of major texts of Czech literature that are usually considered to be prototypes of self-reflexive novels. These are works Hra doopravdy by Richard Weiner, Rozhraní by Václav Řezáč and Hlava umělce by Milada Součková.

Problematical historical preservation buildings from the 2nd half of the 20th century on example of the Military building Abstract The bachelor thesis focuses on the problematical protection of buildings from the second half of the twentieth century. The historical preservation issue will be presented on the construction of a Military building, which was built in the style of Brutalism. This unique building of architect Jan Hančl will be monographically worked on and evaluated in a broader sociology context, together with related problems of its historical preservation. The recent circumstances, which led to a longtime covering using large billboards, will be clarified. The following removal of the advertisement provoked a lot of emotions and resulted in a complete demolition. The author of this bachelor work aims to take hold of this affair, and he points out the historical institution malfunctioning, which is slowly becoming a phenomenon. Besides ordinary art- historical methods, oral testimonies of direct participants were used, primarily of the professional public, along with the conservationists, and members of the club called Za starou Prahu. The Art Scene in Ostrava in an Extended Context of the1980's and 1990's

As a result of the postmodern decentralization of thinking, the monolithic historical development is undermined and together with it the peripheral streams of artistic development are accepted. In the mid-eighties in the Czech republic two parallel regional art scenes were emerged in Ostrava and Usti nad Labem, which are characterized by a different approach to traditional artistic strategies. It seems that traditional disciplines in these regions are failing, and the artists due to the impossibility of continuous connection with previous historical development and the lack of institutional support opts for the intesified position towards the bases of the art itself and its affirmation. Artists in the 1980s and 1990s in Ostrava turned against the classic institutional activity in the form of orientation on the public space and criticism of the bases of modern autonomous artwork. Jan Kotík 1916-2002 - A Monograph

1 Abstract A monograph on Jan Kotík (1916-2002) introduces both his art and theoretical work, it deals with a historical and cultural context of the now-defunct Czechoslovakia. Kotík's - an artist's, theoretician's, published author's, educator's - artwork enjoys a prominent position in the context of Czech art of the second half of 20th century. An art-historical assessment of artwork was based on Kotik's artwork inventory and on all the documentation on Kotik's life and art work archived in the Documentation Department of the Institute of Art History of the Academy of Sciences of the CR and in private archives in the CR and Berlin. The study is based on a method of organic combination of biographical data and art-historical data with quotation of Kotik's theoretical texts. An evolution of artist's work is demonstrated chronologically with the context to Czech and world art. The monograph includes chapters: "Father Pravoslav's Art Studio and Study Years", "Art Group 42", "Possibilities of Applied Art", "Painting-Object", "Stay in Berlin", "Returns".
Representation of the House in British Fiction (1906-2009). (E.M. Forster, John Galsworthy, Simon Mawer)

The diploma thesis focuses on diverse representations of the house in selected British novels since 1906. The novels have been chosen in reference to the importance assigned to houses in terms of plot, characters, and setting, each offering a unique vision of the house. A house is perceived as a home, as a possession or as a work of art. The novels by E.M. Forster, John Galsworthy and Simon Mawer are viewed through the prism of Phenomenology, namely the essays of Martin Heidegger, Jan Patočka and Anna Hogenová. This type of analysis provides an insight into the motivations of the individual characters, but also a deeper understanding of the function and role of the house in fiction as well as in reality. The Weekend of Dermot & Grace: Eugene R. Watters' Long Modernist Poem

The oeuvre of the Irish poet, novelist, playwright and essayist Eugene Rutherford Watters (later publishing under the name Eoghan Ó Tuairisc), who wrote both in English and Irish, has been mostly neglected by literary criticism. This thesis focuses on Watters' ambitious long modernist poem The Week-End of Dermot and Grace (1964), which has so far received only perfunctory critical treatment. Formally, The Week-End shows clear affinities with the works of high modernism (especially with the poetry of T.S. Eliot), especially in terms of poly- and multivocal qualities of Watters' overtly allusive language and the liberal employment of wide-ranging intertextual references. On the thematic level, the poem centres around Watters' preoccupation with the dropping of the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima on 6th August 1945 by the American forces, a momentous event that impelled the poet to questions about faith, civilisation, technology, and collective guilt in the context of the Irish neutral stance during the Second World War. Reflections on Hiroshima also led him to contemplate the role of the poet and poetry in the modern "atomic age". The Theme of Art and Life in selected Jeanette Winterson's Novels

The aim of this thesis is to explore the theme of art in Jeanette Winterson's novels with special attention given to the relationship between art and life in her aesthetic system. The theoretical part of this work is concerned with describing Winterson's philosophy of art and defining it as a combination of modern and postmodern elements. The practical part deals with three novels, Written on the Body (1992), Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? (2011) and Art & Lies (1994), and explores how the theme of art and life is developed in each of these works.
