Cultural Publicism in London Exile Periodicals during the Second World War
Batistová, Anna ; Čeňková, Jana (advisor) ; Orság, Petr (referee) ; Večeřa, Pavel (referee)
The dissertation A Cultural Journalism in London Exile Periodicals during the Second World War approaches a hitherto unexplored topic of literary and journalistic work of Czechoslovak writers and journalists in London in the years 1939-1945. The London exile periodicals became a free publication platform for Czechoslovak refugees. At first, cultural journalism began to appear in the cultural sections of London exile newspapers published in the Czech language Čechoslovák [Czechoslovak] and Mladé Československo [Young Czechoslovakia], however, the most important work appeared in cultural magazines after 1941; it was the literary magazine Obzor [Horizon], the cyclostyled monthly Kulturní zápisník [Cultural Notebook] and the English-language quarterly magazine Review. The research of all available issues of these three cultural periodicals between the years 1941-1945 consists (apart from a quantitative overview of authors) primarily of a qualitative analysis of the most important topics that were written about. Finally, the dissertation presents some of the important journalistic and literary personalities in London's cultural magazines.
Critic or creator? Merging the roles of cultural journalist and audiovisual content creator
Šafová, Julie ; Turek, Pavel (advisor) ; Čeňková, Jana (referee)
Bachelor's thesis Critic or creator? Merging the roles of cultural journalist and audiovisual content creator focuses on the specific aspect in which the sphere of cultural journalism is penetrated by people who are themselves engaged in the process of creating cultural contents. The paper first defines cultural journalism and criticism as general genres with linguistic specifics, then focuses on the concept of criticism as an institution and describes the crisis of the critical genre and its form in the digitalized environment of today. Other chapters deal with the precarization of work, a phenomenon during which permanent jobs are replaced by precarious work dependent on part-time and one-off activities, which is central to the Czech and global cultural journalism and its understanding. The thesis defines how the precarization of work affects the cultural industry and media production. The aim of the thesis is to examine the relationship between the roles of cultural publicist and audiovisual content creator, how this relationship is reflected in the activities of those who occupy both roles, and how these roles complement each other. The practical output of the thesis is a series of eight interviews with male and female respondents who, in addition to audiovisual criticism, are also involved in...

Škopková, Andrea ; Klimeš, Ivan (advisor) ; Bednařík, Petr (referee)
This study is based on reviewing Jan Kliment's journalism in the context of wide social, cultural and political conditions of the so-called Normalization in Czechoslovakia. Jan Kliment was an exponent of the communist regime journalism, specialized on cultural events. The study is trying to summarize and to describe the film criticism lineament under the ideological power of the Communist Party in the times of Normalization, actually in the beginning seventies. The text includes (apart from the presentation of Kliment's movie pictures reviews) a brief introduction to the history of the Czechoslovakian leftist film criticism, general facts about the Czechoslovakian media landscape in the era of the so-called Prague Spring and the subsequent Normalization and information about Kliment's career.
Writing about art: the problems of interpretation of art and its conveying in media through the eyes of Czech art journalists
Laufer, David ; Hroch, Miloš (advisor) ; Čeňková, Jana (referee)
The bachelor's thesis Writing about art: the problems of interpretation of art and its conveying in media through the eyes of Czech art journalists deals with writing about fine art in media. First, it generally examines the influence of language and society on the definition of art, after which it focuses on the interpretation of works of art in art journalism, the limits of its arbitrarness and the role of the reader and the context. This theoretical knowledge is used in the practical part to analyze semi-structured in-depth interviews with respondents from the ranks of Czech art journalists. Their statements indicate the importance of careful choice of the composition of texts and the method of interpretation, which often depends on the specific nature of the described work of art or exhibition. In spite of these variables, this thesis shows generally preferred approaches of individual respondents to interpreting art. They either build their texts informatively and base their interpretations on the opinions of curators and artists' life stories, or they approach these external interpretations rather skeptically and stick to their own analysis. Respondents agree that in any case they influence the public's view of the often incomprehensible and insufficiently medialized contemporary art, which...
