The thesis also seeks to provide a professional analysis of a phenomenon that almost every Internet user encounters in everyday life. The thesis concludes that the most fundamental cause is a different modern historical experience. Germany, unlike the Czech Republic, has a more than 70-year tradition with a democratic system, while the Czech Republic had a socialist unfree regime until 1989. The Netflix phenomenon and it's impact on the audience behavior
Doležal, Aleš ; Štoll, Martin (advisor) ; Jirků, Jan (referee)
The text of this diploma thesis called "Video on Demand Phenomenon and the Czech Viewer" describes the current situation in the world of the VOD services. It characterizes all the main elements of VOD and related business and viewer behavior and lifestyle resulting from those characteristics. The work also attempts to briefly describe all the main VOD services on the Czech market with regard to their history, current state and deals they offer to the viewer. The bulk of this work is, however, focused on the survey conducted amongst 140 people aged 19 - 26 and presenting its results. The survey finds that majority of those people prefer binge-watching over linear TV, which leads to very uneven TV watching habits and changes in lifestyle. According to the survey, it also appears that paid VOD is currently almost as popular as cable and satellite TV, but majority of people still don't want to pay for more than one service, which means that more than three quarters of them use internet piracy to get access to the desired content.

Internet piracy has recently been addressed by several policies introduced in US, such as SOPA and ACTA. These policies suggest the general opinion to be that piracy reduce profits. The focus of this thesis is therefore put on the introduction of theoretical concept capable of describing possible piracy impacts and then showing empirical observations to prove it. We developed our own modified time-dependent model of demand function with network effect, which suggests that piracy can have indeed different results on producers' profits depending on the conditions. Further, we showed on real data that the resulting piracy effect in film industry is indefinite and piracy in other industries results in various outcomes.
