Immigration and Wages: A Meta-Analysis

Increasing number of international migrants in last decades attracts the attention of researchers who attempt to estimate the effect of immigration on the wages of native workers. Despite the extensive body of empirical literature, there is no consensus about the true effect. We employ modern techniques in the meta-analysis to address this question. Using original dataset consisting of 644 estimates from 20 primary studies which reflects the last 30 years of the research on the topic in hand we inspect the literature for the presence of publication bias and explain the heterogeneity in the estimates of primary studies. Although, there is some uncertainty about our results, findings from linear and non-linear tests for publication bias suggests the overall effect close to zero or slightly positive. Moreover, we find an evidence that immigration causes distributional effects which contribute to wealth inequality.

Emigration from Czechoslovakia - how to teach about this topic

The submitted diploma thesis is focused on the life and activities of the Czech-Roman theologian, Catholic priest and pedagogue, Karel Skalický. A man who, to pursue his desire for the priesthood went as far as to illegally cross the state border to get to Austria and to Italy. Therefore, refugees and their inclusion in the issue of international migration have become one of the topics of this work. The history and causes of migration are discussed in a greater context. Last part of the thesis is devoted to selected methods of interactive teaching and material based on them. This material can be used in teaching the 112 topic of refugees in Citizenship classes at the second stage of primary school. The diploma thesis is divided into two parts. The first, theoretical part, deals with concepts related to refugees and migration. More attention was paid to the plight of refugees after 1948 with greater emphasis on the situation in the church. Furthermore, the work points out the reasons for the escape of emigrants and some personalities who left their homeland. The presented figures and graphs draw attention to the development of emigration, migration losses and show who are asylum seekers in the countries of the European Union. Ethnocatering - Traditional food as a way to integration

(anglicky): Migration includes a lot of aspects and a lot of scientific disciplines focus on this. One of these aspects is integration, which we can perceive in this case as integration of immigrants into host country society. Approaches and methods of integration can be different depending on ambiguity of this term. This dissertation is focused on specific example of effort to integrate women immigrants with help of traditional food, which came from the ground of civil association InBáze, o.s. The association developed a project named Ethnocatering which helps to immigrants to become successful on job market via their own experience from gastronomy and it`s supporting itself by social entrepreneurship. Women from different countries of the world then have an opportunity to prepare specialties typical for countries they come from and introduce those to the local society. This essay is focused on immigrants from countries such as South Caucasus - Georgia and Armenia and also on traditional food typical for these countries. Czech Immigrants in Minnesota; History and Critical Bibliography

This thesis takes a look at the reasons for the emigration of Czechs from Bohemia to the United States and how this emigration began in earnest after the European revolutionary year of 1848. It also takes a look at the related steps and procedures emigrants took to make this journey possible. A primary focus of this report will be the Czech immigrants that settled in Minnesota; however, the initial part of this work applies generally to Czech immigration to America. The first part of the thesis examines some of the political and social circumstances in Bohemia (as well as in much of Europe generally) that were responsible for the waves of immigration that took place in the second half of the 19th century. The thesis takes a look at how the people learned about America and about the possibilities of traveling there. The thesis also examines how the journey was made from Bohemia to one of the German ports of embarkation, as well as the difficulties and risks awaiting emigrants in such cities. Finally, this section explains the tremendous impact the new changes in sea travel - from sail to steam - had on the rapid rise in the numbers of immigrants coming into the United States. Anti-immigrant Rhetoric and the Concept of National Identity in the French Presidential Campaign in 2012

The thesis Anti-immigrant Rhetoric and the Concept of National Identity in the French Presidential Campaign in 2012 is focused on the political discourse of three main candidates of the French presidential campaign in 2012 (Marine Le Pen, Nicolas Sarkozy and François Hollande). The aim of the research is to analyze the image of immigration and immigrants and on the other hand French and national identity in the discourse of the politicians. As methodological basis for the research critical discourse analysis was selected, completed by analysis of metaphors. The thesis is based on the theoretical framework composed of the following concepts: 1/ discursive reproduction of the racism by so called symbolic elites, 2/ new racism and 3/ construction of national identity. The thesis also presents the social and political context of the election. The main objective of the research is to answer the following research questions: How does the political discourse of presidential candidates deepen the gap between positive self-presentation and negative presentation of the others? And to which extent in the discourse of individual candidates can it be seen? The thesis describes specific topics, topoi and discursive strategies which are used by the candidates.

Civic Integration of Immigrants in France between 2002-2012

The Master thesis "Civic Integration of Immigrants in France between 2002-2012" deals with a new integration model of civic integration which the European immigration countries have begun to enforce since the turn of the millennium. An interesting feature of this model is that it is employed by countries whose approch to the integration of immigrants significantly differed till the end of the 20th century. The goal of the thesis is to discover what character shows the civic integration as a new integration model of immigrants in Europe in the integration policies applied in France between 2002-2012. The main hypothesis is based on the theory of the return of assimilation. Its author R. Brubaker claims that in the current integration policies of (not only) European states, the assimilationist tendencies return - however, not in the original concept of assimilation, but in a new transformed concept in between assimilation and multiculturalism. The thesis applies this theory conclusion to the contemporary civic integration policies, so the research verifies its assimilationist character. Integration of Thai Migrants in Czechia

This thesis analyzes the process of integration of Thai migrants into Czech society. The main aim is to explore the issue of Thai integration in Czech Republic by a quantitative research which haven`t been done fully in Czech Republic yet. Then on the basis of gained data to compare the state with another countries and to set the strategy of Thai integration in Czech Republic among the classic patterns of migrant behaviour or to identify the differences which could be specific only for Czech Republic. The thesis consists three main parts: theoretical, descriptive and practical. The introduction outlines the background of Thai migration. The theoretical framework, that follows, sets the gained information into theoretical concept of migration theories and defines important terms that accompany this thesis. Those analyzed information then help to evaluate the data gained by the practical part. The integral component of the thesis is descriptive part which outlines the development and reality of the investigated topic. The results of the questionnaire survey and interviews among Thai migrants in Czech Republic are presented in the practical part of this work.
