The person of Elijah in tanakh and jewish tradition

The theme of my thesis are deeds of the prophet Elijah happening during his life as well as in the afterlife. My standpoint uses both Jewish and Christian paradigms, seeks connections between them and links one to the other. The books of kings are a major source and I focused on comprehensive understanding of their texts. I have translated used biblical texts and biblical interpretations into Czech where possible for easier understanding. Some more complex themes have also their original texts or sources I worked with embedded.

Trees in the Old Testament Considering the Mythology of the Ancient Near East

This work deals with the symbolism of trees in the Old Testament considering the mythology of the ancient Near East, using relevant literature, concordant exploration, and synchronic and diachronic analyses of biblical texts. It aims to present an intersection of the most important aspects of the appearance of trees in the Scripture, both in a literal and figurative sense. Drawing on work with biblical and mythological texts from the ancient Near East, it presents the tree as a comprehensible symbol with strong explanatory power, which constitutes its potential to contain even the most complex messages of the Scripture and of the human condition as such.

Netiv haprišut. Sexualita a askeze v judaismu Kamila Špinarová Abstract Diploma thesis "Netiv haprishut. Sexuality and Asceticism in Judaism" deals with the "Path of Restraint" written by rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel, the MaHaRaL of Prague. The Path of Restraint is sixteenth chapter of Maharal's philosophical and ethical tractate "Netivot olam". The treatise brings in Maharal's recommendations regarding human acts in intimate sphere of life. The submitted work deals with selected texts from the Path of Restraint, especially with the prohibition of men's autoeroticism. The thesis provides coherent view on Maharal's writings and on the meaning of the term "prishut" within the framework of Maharal's writings. The author of this thesis believes, that the term "prishut" has an essential meaning for Maharal's universe. The true "restraint" has the power to emancipate the man from the destructive influence of the matter and to unify the sphere of the matter with the sphere of divinity. The author then focuses on the passage from the Sefer Zohar (1:18a). Maharal cites the passage three times in his entire work - in the Path of Restraint, in Hiddushei Aggadot and in Be'er ha-Golah. Bernardino de Sahagún and Pre-Columbian Understanding of the World

(in English) The aim of this thesis is to document the Pre-Columbian understanding of the world based on the early colonial text Historia general de las cosas de Nueva España. The author of this book is a Franciscan Friar Bernardino de Sahagún, for that reason I also focus in the introductory chapters of this thesis on the Franciscan activity in the area of the former "Aztec Empire" straight after the conquest. To provide a complete introduction into the context I also include basic information about the Aztec civilization before the arrival of the Spaniards and about the dramatic encounter of these two cultures. The core of my work is a summary and an analysis of Historia general. In this thesis the Pre-Columbian culture is presented throught its two aspects - the spiritual and the "mundane". The content of the thesis provides information about the singificance of the gods in the life of the Aztecs, the rituals dedicated to them, political administration of the "empire" but as well for example the education of the young girls and boys in the Aztec society. Based on the analysis of the Sahagún's text I also mention the distortion of some parts of the text and I point out the necessity for critical reading of his work.

Problems of the Lechery and Adultery in the Pentateuch

The work deals with exegetic-ethical analysis of sexual motives in the Pentateuch. It aims to analyse as well as to systematize the issue of human sexuality in the Five Books of Moses, and to create a compact illustration of the problem. The major part of the work includes an analysis of sexual motives in significant legal regulations - the Ten Commandments, the Covenant Code, the Holiness Code and the Deuteronomic Code. However, the other parts of the Pentateuch must not be left out of consideration and are covered in a separate chapter. The final part tries to synthesize the obtained findings and evaluate systematically the basic sexual questions appearing in the Five Books of Moses.
