Psychological profiling of an offender

Criminal profiling Abstract The purpose of my thesis is to analyse criminal profiling, one of the disciplines of forensic psychology used by law enforcement authorities in their effort to capture offender of a crime. The reason for my research is my interest in the criminal law in general, mainly in the psychological aspects of work of law enforcement authorities with individual offenders. The thesis is composed of three chapters, each of them dealing with different aspects of criminal profiling. Chapter One is introductory and defines basic terminology of criminal profiling and the essence of criminal profiling in general. The chapter is subdivided into five parts, which deals with the term of criminal profiling, its development, particular delicts suitable for profiling, the manner of creating a profile and its efficiency in the criminal proceedings in Czech Republic. Chapter Two examines the best known approaches to criminal profiling, its methods and typology. The chapter consists of five parts. Part One focuses on the different approaches to criminal profiling. Part Two investigates the deductive and inductive methods of criminal profiling. Part Three addresses the issue of the best known computer databases used in criminal profiling, ViCLAS and VICAP. The use of psychology in crime investigation with a focus on criminal profiling psychology of interrogation. Abstract This paper deals with some forms of usage of forensic psychology in investigative practice. Forensic psychology is subfield of psychology that deals with its usage in law practice. This paper describes historical milestones in this field. Furthermore, this thesis describes legal institutes that enable the use of forensic psychology in practice. After this introduction, the remaining part of the thesis is dedicated to selected forms of practical usage of forensic psychology. Specifically, these forms are criminal profiling and psychology of interviewing. Criminal profiling is a newer method that, based on the evidence found, creates presume profile of the offender. This profile usually contains data on the offender's age, gender, possible employment, and social integration of the offender. The profile can also focus on geographical distribution of crime scenes and based on them the profile can determine the area of probable home residence of the offender. Both these variants are described in section dedicated to criminal profiling. Extension of Langman's psychological theory of school shooters.

This bachelor thesis deals with the topic of school shootings. It is based on psychologically oriented research studies focused on the shooter's personality, especially on the theory of Peter Langman. The first part of thesis, among other school shooting theories, describes and discusses in detail Langman's categorization system. The next part focuses on the analysis of five shooters after 2011, specifically John Zawahri, Jessie Osborne, Nikolas Cruz, Bryan Oliver and Robert Gladden. In addition, these cases are divided into attacks in which killing took place and attempted attacks in which no one was killed. Research questions concern the applicability of post-2011 cases to Langman's categorization and the differences between deadly and attempted attacks. The results of the thesis confirm the applicability of Langman's theory to the five early mentioned cases after 2011 and offer the possibility of a minor extension of the theory. Lie Detection Through Verbal and Nonverbal Behavior

This dissertation thesis called 'Lie Detection Through Verbal and Nonverbal Behavior' deals with lying and lies from the viewpoint of its types, functions and considering the development of an individual and it describes the role of lying in our lives. Lying itself is not considered as a negative term, but as a type of communication, a social phenomenon, which is a part of our everyday existence. Attention is aimed to verbal behaviour, but especially to nonverbal aspects of lying persons. Then it examines the use of information on lying and lies in the system of forensic psychology during the deception detection tests. It describes historical approaches to lie detection and its current appearance as well as some other aspects, that may be considered lying even if they are not lying at all - false memories or suggestions. The empirical part compares two research designs, one of them trying to find possible personal determinants of successful lie detectors on a group of psychology students and connecting lie detection ability with the concept of emotional inteligence. The second research analyzes the ability to detect deception among Czech police officers as a specific population group, that uses lie detection methods as a means of investigation. Occurence of dyslexia among Czech prison inmates

The study focused on the occurrence of dyslexia among the convicted in the Czech Republic. On the ground of plentiful research results from various countries that refer to a connection between dyslexia and criminality, a research was conducted in Czech penitentiary environment (specifically the Horní Slavkov prison). The research sample comprised of 113 respondents aged 22 - 65 in the first round of data collection. All respondents met the research criteria: Czech citizenship, Czech nationality and Czech as a mother tongue. The data were collected via the Raven's standard progressive matrixes, personal questionnaire, interview, assessment battery including tests on specific learning disabilities among adolescents and adults and a rapid naming test. The research results have proven a several times higher occurrence of dyslexia among the sample population than in common population, which is 34 % dyslexic individuals in the sample. The research results are comparable to research results from abroad. On top of that, up to 84 % of the respondents spontaneously demonstrated dyslexic difficulties during the interview.
