Music in Czech Movies Made by Milos Forman
Franc, Adam ; Přádná, Stanislava (advisor) ; Klimeš, Ivan (referee)
The thesis deals with a musical aspect in Czech films directed by Miloš Forman. The topic is investigated within a wider context of musical culture of the 1960s as it is focused on analysis of cultural phenomena associated with musical expression which left their impression on Forman's films and participated, to great extent, in specificity of their soundtracks. So the films are not analyzed as separate artifacts, but they are considered as documents affected by the social climate at that time. Common social phenomena which were an integral part of Forman's films are studied such as dancing parties, twist and radio broadcasting. The Forman's cooperation with the Semafor theatre is analyzed as well as how Semafor poetics influenced his films. Jiří Suchý's lyrics and the period hits classified as the medium pop music stream are carefully analyzed as they are an important part of Forman's films. A short outline of the cinematographic context of the 1960s and comparison with films thematically similar help to specify Forman's approach to the music aspect. The collage-like structure of the work highlights a few contradictory trends in pop music of the 1960s whose variety can be seen in Forman's films.

Hilčanský, Peter ; KUDLÁČ, Jakub (advisor) ; REJHOLEC, Pavel (referee)
The purpose of this study is to show specific methods of feature film sound dramaturgy: defining characters with sound. Specifically, how can sound help to create stronger, more memorable characters, reveal their weaknesses, psychological states or create qualities that would not be possible to create some other way. It is specific technique not use in every film. However there is lot of different kinds of films that can strongly benefit from using it. Our aim will be to find interesting films and analyze principles of sound dramaturgy and film language used. Emphasis will be given on the fact, that it is important to incorporate these ideas into the script and think about them in preparation phase of movie making, because in post-production it is often too late.

Music as a Part of the Inner World of film
Šec, František ; BAGDASAROV, Georgy (advisor) ; ČENĚK, Jan (referee)
This thesis deals with the use of music, a factor which strongly affects the viewer's emotions. This is particularly true with respect to its position relative to the image - an important factor affecting its functioning in the film. I start with the theoretical works that analyze the problem, how the viewer in the cinema hears the sounds and what impact it has on their different positions to the image. Principles of film music also influenced the long-term development of cinema. This process was accompanied today's over-use of music. In many cases, the authors ignore the consequences caused by its position. Specific examples of films will help us understand the whole issue. The position of music is not always easily determinable. Work will help us understand the importance of integrating musical part in the film. If music is sophisticated and connected with the world of film, the viewer can concentrate and perceive the film as art.
Dramaturgical overlap of Zdenek Liskas' film music
Voneš, Adam ; SKALL, Vladimír (advisor) ; KOPECKÝ, Pavel (referee)
This bachelor's thesis is a theoretical work of a student of Department Of Sound Design at FAMU. It is not a Zdenek Liska's memoir but the analysis of his film music composed with accent on dramaturgy; the major topic is a look on different functions, which the film music aims for. The main part of the thesis focuses on analyzing the five most important Czechoslovakian movies' dramaturgy overlaps: The Cremator (dir. Juraj Herz), Marketa Lazarova (dir. František Vláčil), Settlement of Crows (dir. Jan Schmidt), Icarus XB 1 (dir. Jindřich Polák) and The Fabulous World of Jules Verne (dir. Karel Zeman). The use of music, which is not only musical, is what is called a dramaturgical overlap: it can stand for a cultural reference, it can be carrier of its own meanings, or music can work as foleys, a soundscape or as a dialogue track. Each film discussed is followed by chosen excerpts on enclosed DVD. The next part is a memoir, not written in a typical biographical way but from a professional's point of view: the topics cover a historical context of film music and Liška's contextualization in it. I discuss Zdenek Liska's cooperation with other crew members such as an editor, a director, other sound designers, musical dramaturge or his work with a symphonic orchestra. His own music composing is in consideration as well, with his very own working processes. This thesis is for professional public in cinema and music industry.
