Aplication of Second-order election on European elections in Visegrad states
Dušátko, Jan ; Lebeda, Tomáš (advisor) ; Mlejnek, Josef (referee)
Diploma thesis "Aplication of Second order election theory on European election in Visegrad states" examines a theory of second-order election and aplicates it on European elections in the Visegrad states. Since this theory was build on election results in founding states of the EU and this theory was many times proved in western Europe, the main goal is to find out whether the election results of the Visegrad states concur with the theory of second- order election or not. In that case goal of this thesis will be to find out where and why there is differences. The thesis is divided into three parts. First theoretical part deals with all theories which were tried to explain different outcomes from different types of elections. Second part introduces our hypotheses and methodology by which we examine these hypotheses. Third part analyses the results of elections from selected countries. First four chapters of the third part deal with selected countries separately. Fifth chapter compares our results from the Visegrad states among them and then it compares these results with results from the countries of EU-15.

Slabyhoudek, Václav ; Váška, Jan (advisor) ; Kasáková, Zuzana (referee)
The bachelor's thesis "Analysing the success of UKIP in 2014 local and European elections" deals with the election results of UK Independence Party (UKIP) in 2014. Namely compares UKIP's results in concurrent local elections and elections to the European Parliament. The aim of the thesis is to confirm a hypothesis that UKIP's results in local elections cannot be considered as a secondary product of UKIP's victory in European elections. Consequently, it characterizes the factors which could confirm this hypothesis. At first, it deals with advancing development of UKIP in British politics. The thesis then concerns the second-order election theory and puts emphasis on British specifics in the area of local and European elections. The paper also monitors UKIP's local and European campaign and analyses the election results. On the grounds of hypothesis the paper examines UKIP's efforts to become a successful component of local government in the UK. UKIP's imitation of the so-called Ashdown strategy is researched for that reason. Subsequently, the thesis therefore focuses on the way how UKIP targets places which are characterized by a large concentration of party's potential voters. The case study of Rotherham is used to examine this strategy. The case study deals with the development of UKIP in...

Electoral system for European Parliament
Svobodová, Tereza ; Zemánek, Jiří (advisor) ; Šmejkal, Václav (referee)
Members of the European Parliament are chosen according to 28 different election systems. The European Union determines only few basic rules, which are concretised by member states in their law systems. Diploma thesis "Election system of European Parliament" deals with similarities and differences between these regulations in order to show inequality of European elections. In the second part of this thesis the author compares a partial aspect of the election system, election threshold in Germany and in the Czech Republic. While the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany invalidated firstly the five-percent-threshold and then even the three-percent-threshold because of its contradiction to Basic Law, the Czech Constitutional Court confirmed it as constitutional afterwards. Both courts judicated that it is a violation of election equality but in the opinion of the Czech one fragmentation of the Parliament would hinder its work with such intensity that election threshold preventing from this fragmentation is justifiable. The judgements are compared and their argumentations analysed if reasonable. This thesis comes to the conclusion, that considered the current state and predictable development election threshold has its justification. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

European parliament
Novotná, Eva ; Grmelová, Nicole (advisor) ; Šťastný, Tomáš (referee)
The European Parliament is the only body in the institutional structure of the European Union, which is directly elected by EU citizens. And due to the holding of direct elections the development of the role of Parliament unfolds itself. Before 1979 (year of the first direct election) Parliament was only an advisory body in the legislative process just only in a consultation procedure which represents the lowest turnout for the Parliament. After holding the elections, the agenda of the Community expanded gradually and this expanded the participation of Parliament. A major step forward was the introduction of other procedures, especially co-decision procedure, which in recent years, is displacing those remaining. Parliamentary position was strengthened by the allocation of control authority - as the appointment of the Ombudsman, the Commission censure, exploring messages from other EU institutions, and many other questions. Today it is an institution which is a full partner in the structure of the Union.
