Framing of the Turów Case in Regional Media
Pištorová, Barbora ; Nečas, Vlastimil (advisor) ; Křeček, Jan (referee)
The aim of the thesis is to analyze the framing of coal mining in the Turów case in news coverage in regional Czech daily newspapers, using a qualitative content analysis of media outputs. The thesis consists of four main parts. In the theoretical part, the thesis summarizes agenda-setting theory, defines the concept of framing, as well as a brief typology and approaches to identifying frames, and describes framing in news reporting. It also offers an overview of the studies focused on the framing of environmental topics by the news media and specifically on coal mining. This is followed by a brief history and development of the Turów case and a methodological section that defines the selected and analyzed media content, but also identifies the risks of this research. Grounded theory and two basic types of coding were chosen to perform the qualitative analysis: open and axial. With their help, the framing used in news coverage of coal mining in the regional media was described, and the identified frames and attributes of the coal mining were subsequently compared with previously conducted studies. The work thus offers an overview of how the media framed coal mining in the Turów case and offers insight into this debate.
Media coverage of Fridays for Future
Honc, Martin ; Miessler, Jan (advisor) ; Končelík, Jakub (referee)
The present thesis investigates the impact of the global strike for climate organised by the Fridays for Future movement and led by Greta Thunberg on the approach of selected Czech media toward their coverage of environmental topics. By applying the method of quantitative content analysis, the thesis aims to uncover how Czech media reported on a clearly defined area of ecological problems and incidental environmental topics before and after the protest, while dedicating special attention to the representation of topics and frames in media agenda and the coverage of the respective persons and organisations involved. The theoretical section defines global ecological issues and presents theoretical concepts relevant for studying the media coverage of environmental topics and the impact of social movements and their protests on the agenda of the topics at hand with regard to historical and societal contexts. The thesis' methodology introduces the primary and secondary research questions and explains the choice of the variables of interest for the subsequent quantitative content analysis of selected Czech media. The practical part interprets the results of the analysis and presents a discussion which confronts the results with insights from comparable foreign studies and dissertations mentioned in the...
Czech and Dutch Audience and Their Perception of Enviromental Issues on the Example of the Big Bang Theory Series
Homolková, Lenka ; Reifová, Irena (advisor) ; Štoll, Martin (referee)
In this work, I focus on the propagation of environmental issues through sitcom and comparison of the perception of these topics by Czech and Dutch audiences. I report on the results of focus group research of the American show The Big Bang Theory (2007-2019), from which artefacts were pre-selected with the assistance of thematic analysis. These findings suggest different perception of the environmental contents included in the researched series, the same as the varying perception of hypothetical promotion of the environmental issues in the future series. Generally speaking, the global sample perceives the promotion of environmental issues in popular media positively, though the degree and the form of the accepted usage of these topics vary. Czech audiences perceive the topics more negatively than the Dutch audience, showing a lower sensitivity threshold for a possible attack on their own opinions and identity. The most significant differences were observed in the perception of the concept of nature, the person interested in the environment, and the individual impact on the improvement/deterioration of the environment. A suitable tool for communicating environmental issues in the sitcom is corrective irony (allowing to emphasize the contrast between environmental awareness and personal actions to...
