City as a place of mind - Wilderness in public space
Vondrušková, Eliška ; Pfeiffer, Jan (advisor) ; Tsikoliya, Lenka (referee)
The thesis discusses the phenomenon of a city with a special focus on public space and its wilderness aspect. It examines the city as a place for non-human organisms to inhabit and discovers its specific habitat, which is populated by a vague terrain of various sizes. It traces the relationship between the city and nature, how this relationship has evolved throughout history, and how nature is brought into cities in the form of gardens and parks. It alludes to the theme of the second nature that surrounds cities. The main theme is urban wilderness, the uninvited nature of cities and its aspects. The aim of this thesis is to explore the topic of urban wilderness, its aspects and manifestations, which are then didactically transformed. This is preceded by the study of literature and fieldwork, which includes archiving and mapping of different spaces. The central city for this exploration is my birthplace and hometown of Prague which enables observation on an everyday basis (whether intended or unintended). The didactic part of the thesis focuses on the transformation of the topic into three wholly different art assignments, which offer the students three different perspectives. Each perspective is tied to their personal experience and two of the perspectives also directly include their presence in...
Rural Landscape as an Aesthetic Object
LHOTSKÁ, Karolina
The diploma thesis aims to define the rural landscape as a specific aesthetic object in comparison with a different type of landscape - the wilderness. The starting material is the theoretical perspective of one of the most important environmental aestheticians of today, Allen Carlson. The thesis first summarizes his process how we reach an appreciation of not only agricultural landscapes, and then it subsequently develops a history of the aesthetic appreciation of rural landscapes and wilderness. The thesis also expand the not very broad field of interest in the specifics of aesthetic appreciation of rural or agricultural landscapes in this country and thus contribute to functional landscape planning with regard to its aesthetic aspects.
Wilderness and recreation in the Šumava NP - typology of the relationship
Zitová, Anna ; Romportl, Dušan (advisor) ; Matějček, Tomáš (referee)
The diploma thesis focuses on evaluating the relationship between wilderness and recreation, specifically in the Czech National Park Šumava. Šumava is one of the unique natural sites, not only due to its location in Central Europe, but also due to its unique natural wealth hidden in the heart of Europe. Moors, peat bogs, river springs, but also forest vegetation and much more are among the treasures of this Czech national park. These places are an attraction for many visitors. The work examines how to reconcile these two opposing tendencies. On the one hand, it is a desire to protect the natural environment and, on the other hand, it is the ever-increasing pressure of tourism and recreation. The diploma thesis is divided into two basic parts. The first part is a search of the evaluation of the "wilderness" itself and offers a view of this concept from different angles. It is evident that the view of the wilderness will be different in the world context from what we know from the Czech Republic. Furthermore, it is possible to get acquainted with the influence of recreation on the natural environment, resp. "Wilderness". The work examines the effects of recreation on fauna and flora in the most detail. The practical part of the work addresses the relationship between recreation and "wilderness" in...
Alaska - Culture and Nature in Audiovisual Representation
Moulis, Ladislav ; Štoll, Martin (advisor) ; Soukup, Martin (referee) ; Hádková, Jana (referee)
Alaska, which has been the 49th state of the USA since 1959, is a very unique locality according to many viewpoints. Although it is a part of the civilized Western world, it presents one of the last well- preserved wildlife on the Earth. Although Alaska is gradually settled by immigrants, native people have to deal with their dilemma connected with assimilation for many centuries. They did not create their own new culture - its cultural specifics are still defined by combination of original cultural patterns of Yup'ik and Inupiat Eskimos and natural tribes Tlingit, Haida, Athabaska, Aleut and imported cultures. My work is a study of clashes between civilization and nature resp. civilization and original ethnic groups and it goes throughout structural analysis of audiovisual artefacts, in this case visual records and films from fictional and non-fictional category. The subject of my analysis is a method and variability of possible approaches to Alaska presentation by audiovisual means and mainly examines formation and development of stereotypes in presentation of wildlife and human lifestyle in their specific conditions. The advantage of my research is a limited locality and relatively lowly explored area and also overview (even numerous) of audiovisual materials in its own way. Next to the...
