(Re)production of the canon in the 20th century architectural historiography: critical analysis

The thesis (Re)Production of the Canon in the 20th Century Architectural Historiography: Critical Analysis deals with the topic of the architectural canon and especially on a critical reflection on the principles of its formation. The thesis presents the theoretical background and argumentation appearing in both foreign and czech texts (published from the second wave of feminism to the present) that view the architectural canon and the interpretation of architectural history critically - primarily through the cathegory of gender. The analytical part of the thesis focuses on a quantitative and qualitative content analysis of syllabi for survey courses on the history of architecture taught at Czech universities, with the aim of answering the research question: How is the history of 20th century architecture taught at universities in the Czech Republic - and to what extent is it a history that takes into account the creative contribution of women? Modern architecture in Slaný

The author of diploma thesis will compile an art-historical monography of an architecture of the first half of the 20th century in town called Slaný. Firstly, she briefly outlines the urban and architectural development of the town from its beginnings to the end of the 18th century and more specifically in the 19th century. This part of the thesis should result in defining the overall architectural characteristics of the town and identifying those that could positively and negatively determine the entry of modern architecture into the historical environment. The core part of the thesis will be devoted to the analysis and interpretation of selected buildings from the period between 1900 and 1950. The author will observe by which contents and ambitions was the city connected with modern architecture and what forms the battle between tradition and modernity resulted in. As well, she will attempt to find such architectural aspects between smaller town and center, that could be generalized for the entire Czech environment during the stated period. The study about water towers explains their development in the territory of the Czech Republic. More specifically it deals with water towers of the first half of the 20th century, which are studied from perspective of architecture, historic preservation, and urbanism. They are considered in broader context and finally proven to have a rightful place in the history of Czech modern architecture. Special attention is paid to the integration of water towers into contemporary towns. It is presented on real examples of conversion, while it bears in mind the issues of historic preservation and industrial heritage. Early works of Martin Rajniš 1968 - 1986 in the context of the Liberec Association of Engineers and Architects (SIAL)

The bachelor thesis focuses on the early works of Martin Rajniš, closely connected with his work in the SIAL Kindergarten. The first chapter is devoted to the establishment and the education at the SIAL Kindergarten within the Liberec Association of Engineers and Architects, as well as the leading representatives of both groups. The second chapter of the thesis presents the work of M. Rajniš during his postgraduate years in the SIAL Kindergarten at the turn of the sixties and seventies. The third chapter is devoted to Rajniš's cooperation with the Liberec Stavoprojekt. His first big project is the design of the Prior 02 Shopping Centre, later called Máj Department Store. It is located at Národní třída in Prague. M. Rajniš collaborated on this project with John Eisler and Miroslav Masák, the founders of the Liberec Association of Engineers and Architects. Rajniš's collaboration with the architect Michal Brix, who himself went through the SIAL Kindergarten, is also crucial for this time. The fourth chapter is connected with the year of 1986, when M. Rajniš, in collaboration with M. Brix and Studio Shape, managed to design the exhibition Expo 86 in Montreal, Canada. Reception and expansion of modern architecture outside the centre on the example of Benešov and its surroundings Abstract The diploma thesis is a monography of an architecture of the Benešov in the first half of the 20th century. The emphasis is to be put on the reception of modernity related to the centre- periphery relations. After a summary of the architecture development in Benešov, a history of the Czech modern architecture is briefly outlined using examples from Benešov. Diploma also focuses on enforcing individual style layers of a modern architecture in local environment and monographically contemplates an input of two chosen figures, Otakar Novotný and Alois Mezera. The author of the thesis attempts to restore how their production influenced local building culture. In final conclusion, the specifics of modern architecture in Benešov are listed to give general answers to the questions exposed in the introduction. Balcony access house in the architectural and urban development of the city of Žižkov

First, the development of mass housing in general is outlined, followed by the developement of the balcony access house itself, in which was considered also historical perspective of material and social environment of the Žižkov area. The core of the thesis is the analysis of the Žižkov balcony access house with aim to determine its specific features and to show how it get along with the increasing requirements for quality of living, how it has been adapted, as well as how the balcony access house had to retreat. The final chapter establish the impact of the balcony house to the genius loci of Žižkov and demonstrate its understanding on the arts of contemporary architecture. Architect Antonín Tenzer

The work of Antonin Tenzer involves his activities in the period of six decades in the turbulent era of development of Czechoslovak history of architecture. The architect is known as one of the representatives of the avant-garde and High functionalism, author of Faculty Hospital in Prague-Motol and other medical buildings or the Jalta hotel, a building associated with socialist realism. In my dissertation, I tried to map the main typological fields that Antonín Tenzer used in his work. My goal was to widen the portfolio of famous buildings, and on the basis I defined the architect's major themes and current issues, which were responded in his effort. I based primarily on historic materials - published projects, plan documentation and writings of public and private archives, as well as personal heritage, made available to me by the architect's family. In particular thematic areas I focused on Tenzer's vital and successful implementation of competition projects, which he later followed and extended. In addition to impulses from his collaborators, debates and majors works of those days I was looking for elements and methods of Tenzer that influenced the architecture environment. Roller mills of the Winternitz brothers in Pardubice

The student will write a monographic study about the automated mills of the Winternitz brothers in Pardubice. The subject of the study will be briefly considered in the context of general development of industrial architecture in the Czech lands. The author of the thesis will then explain the importance of the architect Josef Gocar regarding the Czech architecture of the 20th century. Origins of the automated mills will be put into a connection with a modernization of the city. The building itself in its primal form will be described in a thorough formal analysis and the style of the building will be characterized as well. Further development of the site will be watched in the next chapter. The study will then result into an analysis of the problem of a historic preservation concerning industrial architecture after it loses its original function, as well as the relationship between industrial and architectural heritage and the possibility of its revitalization. What preceded the construction of the first and the largest crematory in Prague is the theme of this bachelor thesis. The aim of this work is to present comparison between competitive architectural design and describe a realization of the final design by an architect Alois Mezera in the context of the era. Last part of the thesis is also a detailed description of the interior and exterior. I also mention the historical context related to this building.
