The Hypocoristic forms of schoolchildern's names in Trhové Sviny
MOJHOVÁ, Zdeňka
The diploma thesis deals with the anthroponymy, namely native (first) names and their hypocoristic changes in various emotional communication situations. Onomastics is introduced as a scientific discipline, the term anthroponym, birth name and hypocorism are also included. The practical part of the thesis captures birth names and their hypocoristic material in the selected locality, while the obtained material is then analysed both in terms of etymology (determining the origin and meaning of birth names) and word formation (recording trends in the way hypocorisms are formed).
Motivations for Foreigners And Mixed Families Living in the Czech Republic When Choosing Children's Names
Manderlová, Eva ; Hájková, Eva (advisor) ; Janovec, Ladislav (referee)
The bachelor's thesis deals with the motivation of choice of the children's names of foreigners and of children from ethnically mixed families living in the Czech environment. It is divided into two parts - theoretical and practical. The theoretical one presents the concepts of first name, onomastics, anthroponyms and others. Furthermore the bachelor's thesis describes the development of maiden names, their distribution by origin, individual motivation of name's choice and the rules of recording those names into the register office. The practical part is based on the results derived from filled in questionnaires. The results are evaluated from several different points of view. The key one is evaluation based on distribution of respondents by continents, onwards the "European" results are compared with the "non-European". Parents' length of stay in the Czech Republic is taken into account as well as the possibility of the existence of ethnically mixed parental couples accompanied by the motivation of the choice of two maiden names. The results are expressed as a percentage and also clearly shown in the various tables that are part of the bachelor's thesis.

Nedbalová, Monika ; Chejnová, Pavla (advisor) ; Hájková, Eva (referee)
WHAT WILL BE HIS/HER NAME? MOTIVATION FOR NAMING OFFSPRING Abstract The thesis deals with given names in general and in particular with motivation of parents to choice of name. The first part summarizes theoretical resources and deals with the history of researching of antroponyms. The first part further concentrates on given names, their origin, their function, variation of repertory and trends in motivation of parents to choice of name. The thesis also includes the chapter about legal regulation of given names. There is mentioned also the previous research on given names written by Miloslava Knappová in 1970's. The practical part of the thesis is based on questionnaire research on motivation of parents to choice of name. The research was carried out in Central - Bohemia Region, Liberec Region and Prague Region from December 2010 to February 2011 and respondents were the parents of children born between years 2005 - 2010. The aim of the research was to ascertain current trends and motivation to choice of name, which reasons are the most frequent and which reasons decrease in historical comparison. The practical part then deals with the relation between motivation to choice of name on one hand and age, educational attainment and place of residence of parents on the other hand. The acquired information are...
Pronunciation of Proper Names in Interpreting
Chvojková, Kristýna ; Duběda, Tomáš (advisor) ; Sitařová, Kateřina (referee)
This thesis addresses the pronunciation of proper names in simultaneous interpreting from French into Czech. It consists of 2 parts: the 1st, theoretical part discusses the definitions, categorization and functions of proper names as described in the relevant literature. The work then focuses on adoption of loanwords in Czech and on the specific situation of proper names in simultaneous interpreting. The empirical part analyses 600 personal names from speeches interpreted at plenary sessions of the European Parliament. The aim of the research is to describe the adaptation principles in pronunciation of proper names interpreted into Czech; the intelligibility of the used equivalents; and the frequency of use of female forms of surnames in the European Parliament. The results show that the prevailing adaptation principle is phonological approximation, which corresponds to the rules set by the codified pronunciation standard. Other common principles are retention of the original pronunciation and spelling pronunciation. Original pronunciation is more frequent in names of French origin, whereas spelling pronunciation is found mostly in English and German names. Most of the used translation equivalents are comprehensible: the number of incomprehensible equivalents amounts to 7-11%. Surprisingly, most of...

Due to the field of study, the material was obtained by means of questionnaires, which were submitted to pupils of the second grade of the selected elementary school. The research part follows the theoretical part, which deals with onomastics as a linguistic discipline and defines in more detail the issue of anthroponyms, birth names, hypocoristics and nicknames.
Introduction to Literary Onomastics
Dvořáková, Žaneta ; Harvalík, Milan (advisor) ; Šrámek, Rudolf (referee) ; Krško, Jaromír (referee)
Introduction to Literary Onomastics Abstract Žaneta Dvořáková Czech onomastics has been traditionally well advanced; it has a high-quality theoretical and methodological foundation and is highly regarded internationally. However, unlike in other countries, literary onomastics as one of its disciplines still lacks sufficient attention. R. Šrámek - along with his counterparts abroad, K. Gutschmidt and W. F. H. Nicolaisen - points out its terminological and methodological inconsistency, insufficient theoretical elaboration and the problem of defining its scope of research. It is this call that I want to answer with my dissertation. The goal of my Introduction To Literary Onomastics is to provide a critical and complex summary and assessment of the current understanding of literary proper names and to further research the subject - especially by extending its scope with some new views of anthroponyms in fiction based on profound analyses of modern works of Czech and foreign literature of the 19th and 20th century. My research builds upon methodological-theoretical findings reached by the development of both Czech and foreign literary onomastics; at the same time, it draws on the latest findings of general onomastic theory. Excerpted works purposely represent a wide variety of literary genres, which allows us to...

Motivation of Addressing childern by hypocoristicons
Hrubá, Eliška ; Chejnová, Pavla (advisor) ; Palkosková, Olga (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with first names in general, a particular attention is, however, given to their usage in communication, to the familiar modifications of first names and to the motivation of addressing by hypocoristic forms as well as to the origin of nicknames. Within the first part, all the theoretical themes are summarised. The focus is primarily aimed towards the overall setting of the issue within the field of onomastics and the role of antroponyms within the linguistic system. The theoretical part further focuses on first names, motivation of their origin, function, transformation of the repertory of first names and their function within communication, language characteristics and naming motives. The issue of first names is enriched with an interpretation about the usage of antroponyms and their auto-nominalisation and along with a historic development of the shift from single-naming towards double-naming. The key part of the theoretical section concerns hypocoristics, the development of the hypocoristic forms of first names, their usage within communication as well as specific categories of hypocoristics and their language and word-forming characteristics. Interest was also put on nicknames and their general characterisation. A practical part of the thesis is based on a proper...
