The Reprezentation of Selected Socialist and Communist Countries in the Czech Press in 2010

Theme of this diploma work are news related to selected socialist and communist countries in the Czech press. Characteristic works are the specifics of media countries with the socialist (or communist) government in the Czech press. Theoretical work is beyond theory Frankfurt and Birmingham schools. The basis of the analysis work will stereotypes concerning the socialist and communist countries, the Czech news media contents. The findings will then be the basis for in-depth interviews with the news media workers and the staff representative bodies of the countries. The goal is to reveal the motives and the construction of stereotypes at the production of media content.

McCarthyism and it's picture in press

The thesis deals with the phenomenon of American history known as McCarthyism, and it does so in the context of the Cold War. The work focuses primarily on the role of the press, which significantly contributed to the emergence and later demise of McCarthyism. It also deals with international and internal reasons for the emergence of McCarthyism and the person of Senator McCarthy. Using data from the Gallup research shows the effects McCarthyism had on the American society. The work concludes that McCarthyism relied on the printed media support. The press tried to deliver the message, but did not comment on it, and it was the reader who was supposed to form their own opinion. Some journalists were afraid of retribution and others were in favour of or agreed with the anti-Communist campaign. Some newspapers saw the easy money that covering the Communist infiltration was bringing. Only a small portion of printed media actually criticized McCarthyism... The reasons for the emergence of McCarthyism relates mainly to the geopolitical situation. The Soviet Union had gained control over large parts of Eastern Europe and acquired the atomic bomb, the Communists had won the civil war in China, and would soon be clashing with the US in the Korean War. KSČM : The Prohibition Discourse

(English): The aim of the thesis is to analyse the discourse of exclusion of the Czech communism and the discoursive attempts to ban the communist party. It shall shed more light on its sources of thought as found in the Czech dissident movement, as well as on the conditions it has risen from after the Velvet revolution. We intend to point out that the two main concepts of the dissident thought are essential for the birth of the discourse - one is shaping it, while the other opposes. The influence of non-political discourses - such as legal or political discourse on the subject - are also given serious attention. Using the Critical Discourse Analysis toolbox of methods, we hope to enhance our knowledge about contradictory images of the Czech past that shape contradictory images of the communism as well.

Anticommunist propaganda in the United States 1945-1975

Anticommunist propaganda achieved its greatest success in the period from the late 40s of the 20th century until the beginning of the Vietnam War. It managed to convince the American society of participation in the Korean War, to launch a Red Scare at home and to affect greatly the lives and behavior of the Americans facing a threat of a nuclear conflict between the U.S. and the USSR. However it failed to ensure and maintain support for the U.S. involvement in Vietnam. The main goal of this work is to specify causes of the propaganda failure which is considered one of the decisive factors that led to the withdrawal of troops and final defeat in Vietnam.
