Vancouver - Affordable Housing Challenge

The subject of this work was the preparation of project documentation consisting of the building permit documentation, documentation for the execution of the construction and the design of the architectural detail. The Bachelor thesis is based on the architectural study developed as a part of the course AG035studio work. The main idea behind social housing in Vancouver is to create affordable housing primarily for young people, whether individuals, couples, or families. The goal of the new housing design is to maximize the use of unbuilt and especially ballast plots near the city centre, attractive to the young generation that is lacking in Vancouver downtown. This need corresponds with the site plan which is derived from a maple leaf, the symbol of Canada, stylized into a pentagon. Addition of right angles creates a landform of variable use that can be easily placed on vacant lots even of irregular shapes. The proposed complex of three apartment buildings is located in the city of Vancouver, Canada, in a local neighbourhood of Mount Pleasant. The subject site is located south of the city centre and the site is easily accessible due to the well-developed public transportation and frequently used bicycle network. The proposal addresses both the building and the connection to the adjacent neighborhood. A total of three buildings of varying heights are proposed. The lowest is five storey and the heights escalate to the tallest seven storey building. The taller buildings stand on corners and visually exposed locations. There are four residential units proposed on each storey of the residential buildings, with the exception of the first storey offering rentable spaces. In total, sixty residential units are proposed, fifteen of which are of the 3+kitchen corner type and the other forty-five of the 1+kitchen corner type. The project documentation of the Bachelor's thesis deals with the apartment building A located in the north of the site.

The bachelor's thesis is based on an architectural study developed within the subject Studio of Architectural Creation [AG035]. The subject of the proposal is the new construction of an apartment building complex with parking in the city of Vancouver, Canada. The land to which the proposed building belongs is located in the Downtown district, near George Wainborn Park and the Granville Bridge. This is an area intended for residential and mixed use. The lower part of the building is elevated, rows of columns are bearing the weight of the residential building, creating an option of walking underneath the structure. Each floor is divided into 6 parts. The northern module forms the communication core of the building. A typical residential floor consists of, apart from the communication core, 7 residential units. The entrances to the individual apartments are located along the atrium through the living room. Clockwise, with the floor plan oriented to the north, these are the housing units in the following order: two 1+1kk, four 1kk & 2+1kk. The total number of residential units is 86. The building includes underground parking for residents and employees of the building. The main entrance is designed from the north side, a vestibule was created here, serving as a public space with benches and grassy areas with trees. Two circular reinforced surfaces are created, connected by paths, which complement the object compositionally. The basic plan shape is a hexagon. This geometric shape provides the possibility of division into modules, thus creating the flexibility of the building. Sharp geometric shapes are complemented by organic balconies that wrap around the form. Repetitiveness is broken by cut-outs, forming community facilities scattered around the building. The center of the building holds an atrium surrounded by a ring of built-on gallery, single-arm staircases rise and fall through the atrium, creating dynamics. The building is covered with an extensive green roof, the dominant material of the facade is concrete, combined with aluminum windows and cream-colored railings. As part of the project documentation, half of the object SO.01 is addressed.

The bachelor's thesis is based on the project of an apartment building, created as a part of the subject AG035 Architectural Design Studio. The subject matter is a design solution for an affordable housing in the city of Vancouver – one of the largest Canadian agglomerations with a fast-growing suburb area. The main idea of the project was to design an affordable and at the same time dignified housing for young families and working singles. One of the project‘s further goals is to revitalize the city center and encourage more people to switch to the urban lifestyle. The designed apartment building is located on Macdonald St, in a quiet city area, built up primarily by apartment and family houses. The project‘s parcel has a relatively flat area. There are a total of five floors in the building, including one underground parking floor. The underground floor also includes facility spaces for residents. The first aboveground floor is divided into two sections – a public and a private one. The public section is designed for two commercial units: a sports club and a coffee shop. The private part of the first aboveground floor is designated as a share space for residents. Next three aboveground floors are residential and include 4 units per floor. Thanks to the receding of the above-ground floors, each of the apartment units was provided with a balcony or terrace supplemented by a vegetation area. There is an atrium running over the upper floors, which illuminates the hallways leading to the individual apartments with da light. The structural system of the building is combined, formed primarily by means of brick walls with the use of reinforced concrete columns in the 1st underground and 1st above-ground floors. The building is covered with a flat roof with a terrace in combination with a green roof.

Development of Activities of Chinese Organizations in Vancouver (1896-1923): Case Study of Chinese Benevolent Association

The Chinese are currently the largest Asian national minority in Canada. Tthey make up about thirty percent of the total population of Vancouer. The Chinese have played an important role in the history of British Columbia. The first Chinese arrived on the shores of British Columbia in the first half of the 19th century. A significant increase of new Chinese immigrants comes with the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway, which was built primarily thanks to hard work of Chinese workers. After completion of the railroad, a large proportion of immigrants settled in Vancouver, which in the early 20th century became the city with the largest Chinatown in Canada. However, the Chinese encountered resentment from Canadian society, which considered them to be representatives of the inferior race, and part of the white public even demanded their deportation and a total ban on the entry of new Chinese immigrants. However, the Chinese community came together and concentrated in Chinatowns. But, they constantly faced stereotypes from Canadian society. Various organizations and associations also began to emerge and they tried in any way to help the Chinese community. Comparison of olympic broadcasting on czech television from winter olimpic games 2010 and 2014

This thesis principally compares the Olympic broadcasting on the Czech Television covering Winter Olympic Games 2010 in Vancouver and 2014 in Sochi. The first part of the text defines the concept of Olympism, the history of the Olympic Games and the Czechoslovak Olympic Committee, and the current form of the Games and their future. The further analysed Winter Olympics 2010 and 2014 are being briefly described in this section as well. Moreover, the relationship between sport and media, and the media event of the Olympic Games are being defined. Considerable attention is being given to the Olympic Television Broadcasting. Consequently, the history of broadcasting, broadcasting rights, commercialization of the Olympics, their funding, and the function of Olympic Broadcasting Services is being discussed too. The latter part is devoted to the Czech Television, its history and current form as a public service broadcaster. The chapters that deal with an analysis of Olympic broadcasting covering Vancouver and Sochi describe the Olympic teams of the Czech Television in Prague and in the Olympic venue, program schedules, and web specials. The EXPO exhibitions are events of the world importance, their tradition reaches back to the year 1851 and classifies itself to the significantly outstanding events, which dozens of states from the whole world participate. In this Bachelor's Thesis I focus on the analysis of how Rude pravo and Mlada fronta (later Mlada fronta Dnes) informed about exhibitions in Vancouver (1986), Osaca (1970) and Sevilla (1992). This Bachelor's Thesis aims to provide the overview of the Expo Exhibitions as well as the overview of the media attention that was paid to the event and the picture it gained in the journals mentioned above.

THE USAGE OF SPORT NEWS SERVICE OF CZECH NEWS AGENCY FROM THE OLYMPIC GAMES IN VANCOUVER 2010 IN NEWSPAPER SPORT

The bachelor thesis "The usage of sport news service of Czech News Agency from the Olympic Games in Vancouver 2010 in the newspaper Sport" deals with a media coverage of extraordinary important sport event aiming to find out the extend of today's dependence of print newspapers on the service of the press agency. The research is based on the example of the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, one of the most important sport events of 2010, and it surveys the production of sport section of Czech News Agency and the only Czech newspaper focused on sport. The thesis is focused on comparison of the Olympics' news service in the agency and in the newspaper and it covers the period beginning one week before the start of the Olympics and ending one week after the end of the Olympics. It traces the amount of agency's news used by Sport and it finds out whether the newspaper regularly adopted specific kind of news. The thesis also explores whether the journalists in Sport somehow worked more on the agency news or left them in their original form. In the times of on-line media expansion when the on-line news servers use the service from agencies very frequently, the newspaper should not just copy the news from the Czech News Agency.
