Interní Essays on the Impact of Technological Change on Economic Structure Abstract This dissertation investigates the interplay between technological change and economic structure. Welcomed technological change sometimes brings changes to the structure of the economy which introduces not so welcomed economic frictions. On the other hand, economic structure can foster or hinder technological change. This thesis focuses mainly on structural changes such as R&D financing and global value chain (GVC) integration potentially translating into economic productivity. In Chapter 2, I show that business R&D spending exerts both direct and indirect positive effects on value added. Nevertheless, the heterogeneity of the returns to R&D has seldom been examined. Using detailed sectoral data from Czechia over the period 1995-2015, this study finds that privately funded business R&D has both direct and spillover effects, but that the publicly funded part of business R&D only leads to spillovers. The results further suggest that both upstream and downstream spillovers matter, regardless of the source of funding, and that during the period studied, R&D returns were heavily affected by the economic crisis. Role of Knowledge Bases in Regional Innovation Systems

The main goal of this work was to contribute to an understanding of the role of the knowledge bases in regional innovation systems and to identify whether the sizes of the different subsystems of regional innovation systems differ in relation to their economic and innovation maturity, and the structure of the knowledge bases is relevant. Work has also sought to identify factors limiting the more efficient interconnection of the two sub-systems of regional innovation systems and how these negative factors can be overcome. The analyses carried out have shown that economically and innovatively developed regions follow different trajectories in the composition of knowledge bases than less developed regions. More developed regions have more developed analytical knowledge base and less developer regions are more oriented on synthetic knowledge base. The analyses also revealed that regional innovation systems vary in size and internal structure of each subsystem. Advanced regions have a much more developed subsystem of knowledge exploitation, that is the demand side, while less developed and less innovative regions have more developed the supply side, that is, the knowledge generation subsystem. Transfer of Technologies at Faculty of Science, Charles University in Prague

This master thesis is focused on issues of technology transfer and cooperation between universities and application area. The aim is to disclose the barriers and factors that affect technology transfer and to identify the spatial pattern of cooperation. Theory of regional systems, concepts of triple helix, differentiated knowledge bases and models of learning are verified by a case study of Faculty of Science, Charles University in Prague. For the verification were used guided interviews with selected leaders of research teams at Faculty of Science. This thesis points out that the local specifics shape the character of cooperation. On the other hand comparison with research institutions in South Moravia shows that barriers affecting technology transfer are national. The comparison also shows that the existence of supporting institutions can positively affect the transfer of knowledge between academic and industry sphere. Contract research with faculties of Mechanical Engineering in Czechia: The role of Geographical, Cognitive and Institutional proximity

The diploma thesis deals with the cooperation of universities and companies. The main aim was to analyze the spatial distribution of companies cooperating with research teams at the engineering faculties of universities in Ostrava, Liberec, Plzeň and Prague and to find out the spatial formula of the partners working with these faculties. The partial aim of the work was to identify the mechanisms behind cooperation and to analyze initiatives and activities supporting this cooperation. Last but not least, the work tried to find out which types of proximity play a role in establishing cooperation among academic staff and private enterprises. The theoretical framing of the thesis was based on the theory of regional innovation systems and the concepts of triple helix and knowledge bases. In order to obtain the necessary information, a number of interviews with academic staff were carried out. The results show the importance of geographical, institutional and cognitive and social proximity, which have an impact on the character of cooperation. The main finding is that a geographic distance has a major influence on the realization of contract research with engineering faculties.
