The Development of the Cult of St. John of Nepomuk to Canonization

The cult of St. John of Nepomuk was one of the characteristic features of life in the Habsburg Empire and other European catholic countries in the early modern period. The origins of veneration for the medieval martyr were tied to Prague, to his tomb in the cathedral, to the Metropolitan Chapter. The saint became famous above all for the conviction that he gave his life for the preservation of the confessional secret. With his death he preserved the good name of the Czech Queen Joan, who confessed to him; on the other hand, he is said to have punished those who were disrespectful of his own posthumous reputation and grave. He therefore became an immensely popular defender of honour and reputation, values highly valued in the early modern society. Under the influence of the Prague Chapter, St. John's veneration was taken up by the Habsburgs, the Catholic rulers who ascended the throne of John's torturer, Wenceslaus IV, and John's spiritual daughter, Joan. They venerated the saint as one of the patron saints of the Bohemian kingdom, which they ruled. The recatholicization of this kingdom and its associated countries enabled the growth of St John's veneration, which by the end of the 17th century had already begun to spread vigorously beyond their borders. Seven Corporal Works of Mercy and Seven Deadly Sins in Czech Medieval Arts

The bachelor's thesis will deal with the theme of the seven-corporal works of mercy and the seven deadly sins in Czech fine art. These opposing themes develop primarily in a middle-class environment, where they were supposed to appeal to the moral life of the middle-class people. The first part of this thesis will discuss the development of the doctrine of the seven deadly sins in the Middle Ages. The variability of approaches to the seven sins will also be revealed by a comparison with the development of the doctrine of the virtues, where it is also possible to show the starting points for the formation of the medieval teaching on the seven-corporal works of mercy. The second part deals with the analysis of individual sins and acts of mercy, their meaning, and the way they are depicted. In the third part, I will also focus on individual examples of the depiction of this iconography in European art, and we will mention a few important works, especially from the High and Late Middle Ages. Following on from European art, the last chapters will focus on individual examples of the seven-corporal works of mercy and the seven deadly sins in the Czech environment, especially in the book painting and monumental mural.

Morphology of Armour

In my thesis, I was very inspired by middle age, whitch has huge influence on my work. It is a epoch of my interest, I am activelly interrested in it and it is with me throught all my live, practicaly since childhood. In painting there are mainly motives of knight´s armor, whitch is underlying cornerstone of my work. My interrest in armor is caused by it´s technical perfection, decorativeness and majesty in the late phase. In that time technicaly did not acted function of protection, but it acted represetativ function and we can see it like a art or statue. By technical site I really experiment with lots of different technics, in many cases I never stay on single one. I work with layers, underlay, with drawing as well as painting. With diferent washing or scribing I open lower layers, I react to it and then I repaint it, simply experimenting. It is almoust archeology back to the old layers of picture. Discovery, connection older layers with new ones. About the painters whose I am interrested in they are primarily Josef Bolf, Vladimír Kokolia, Jaroslav Róna, Giger, Wolfli, Jackson Pollock.

Design of a sustainable urban structure - based on a medieval city - for the 21st century.

The assignment of diploma thesis was the design of a sustainable urban structure based on a medieval city in Náměšť nad Oslavou. As part of the work, I tried to find the best solution for this solved area, which is isolated by a railway corridor and suggest a new city district based on the principle of a medieval city, which will be linked to the existing city. The proposed development of city blocks is built on a system of platforms that level the terrain within the blocks and enable optimal parking spaces and the use of commercials. This development is complemented by several blocks with villa houses and a city SPA complex. The proposal supports the construction of cycle paths that connect parts of the solved area with the Rathan recreation pond. The design also includes a large park with a lookout tower and a sports ground on the city horizon ner the SPA complex. The accent was also placed on the public area near the new railway station, which serves to gather people for cultural and entertainment opportunities. This public space should not compete with an existing Masaryk square, which fulfills a representative and administration function.

Technology of manufacture and treatment of medieval arrowhead

This thesis analyses issue of manufacture, typology and use of medieval arrowheads. In theoretical part describe historical evolution of bow and his archaeological discovery in Europe, especially from medieval times. After that is revealed historical evolution of arrowheads and describe their typology. In next chapters are mentioned ways of iron production, mainly in early medieval times and also describe technology of manufacture different types of arrowheads. There is a characterization of medieval arrow, his construction and characteristics. Continuously in this background research are revealing questions of penetration depend on the various types of arrowheads, which are testing on the most known types of armour like chainmail or breast plate. In experimental part of this paper are metallographicaly analyzing archaeological discoveries from the early and late medieval times. Conclusions about their manufacturing, treatment and possibilities of use are built on knowledge about arrowheads structures, hardness and shapes.

Projekt obnovy středověké kupecké stezky mezi hrady Potštejn a Litice

This bachelor’s degree thesis is focused on reconstruction of defunct medieval trade road between the castles of Litice and Potštejn in Eastern Bohemia. Spatial vector and raster data were used for elaboration on this project. Recognoscation of the current terrain was taken in account. For the data collection, ArcGIS Pro and Atlas DMT softwares were used. For purpose of reconstruction of the road, research themed on the history of the roads and road network focused on big commercial arteries and important roads passing through our territories was processed. Historical survey of the local territory of the Litice Manor was carried out and characterization of the cadastral areas was processed. On this basis the project of the reconstruction of the merchant road was established.

The Image of Jan Hus in the Early Modern Czech Literature

The work The Image of Jan Hus in the Early Modern Czech Literature tries to map different ways of description of this Czech preacher in selected literary texts from 15th to 18th century, to capture the changes which his image underwent. The chosen authors come from different countries and use different languages, represent different environments, social classes and opinion groups, they also have different education and religion. Individual literary works were assessedby means of comparing the key episodes that are either repeated in the texts, or the author intentionally did not use them. To understand the image of Jan Hus as a whole, also contemporary iconography was taken into account , which in some cases has been taken from other literary texts than those which were compared, so that the image of Hus whereas complete as possible. The comparison of the texts and iconography showed, how accurate the observation of the described scheme was and how the image of Jan Hus was gradually changing. The combination of written and iconographic material from specific time intervals allowed us to observe the gradual change of conceptions of the personality of Jan Hus and events connected with him, because the authors represent the opinion of their ethnic group and time. The cult of St. Barbara in medieval Bohemia

The bachelor thesis deals with the cult of Saint Barbara in medieval Bohemia. Saint Barbara is a legendary saint whose martyrdom is estimated to have occurred around 306. Saint Barbara was first venerated in the East. The cult was imported to Italy during the Byzantine occupation in the 6th century, from there was spread further north of the Alps. The cult experienced its greatest expansion in the West in the 14th century. The cult of Saint Barbara was spread in Bohemia in the 14th century and never achieved such popularity as cults of other saints (for example Saint Catherine). The popularity of the Saint Barbara cult in Bohemia has been reconstructed mainly on the basis of the frequency of dedications of churches, chapels and altars.
