Hydronyms of the Česká Kanada region

The bachelor thesis deals with hydronym of Česká Kanada region, specifically ponds and watercourses. The work is divided into two parts - theoretical and practical. The theoretical part is focused on basic knowledge from onomastics, toponomastics and hydronomastics. The second, practical part follows up particular hydronyms. In the beginning there are stated basic informations about given location that is Česká Kanada. The dictionary section is divided into running water and static water. Every individual entry is interpreted both from semantic aspect and word-formation. At last, hydronyms are classified by Šmilauer´s semantic sorting. Every dictionary section contains data summary.

Palacky fell out of the ATM or Where the proper name begins and ends from the point of view of capitalization

Capital letters in Czech indicate a proper name. However, distinguishing a proper name from a common one can challenging, as evidenced by the number of capitalization enquiries answered by the Language Consulting Center (LCC) of the Czech Language Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences (CLI). In addition, the status of a proper name is not immutable. Th e name may go through an appellativization process (uppercase letter changes to lowercase) or proprialization process (lowercase letters become uppercase). Th is text deals with appellativization in connection with the spelling and with legal consequences of this process, as well as with other naming types that appear to be problematic for Czech users in terms of capitalization. Telephone, letter, and e-mail inquiries of the LCC, which are annotated in the electronic Database of Language Enquiries on the CLI website, are used as material.

Proper nouns in the early Czech travel accounts

The aim of this master´s thesis are personal names and geographicals names in the travelogue which was written by Kryštof Harant z Položic a Bezdružic. The travelogue is called Putování aneb cesta z království Českého do města Benátek, odtud po moři do země Svaté, země Jůdské a dále do Egypta a velikého města Kairu. Onomastics material is subjected to linguistic analysis. The signifiant research part deals with personal names and geographicals names, focuses on classification into required groups and on the analysis of onomastics. The part of this thesis is a statistics with percentage expression of acquired results.

The translation and stylistic analysis of the Jonathan Franzen's short story Agreeable

In this bachelor theasis I am dealing with the problems that may occur during translation, in this particular case from English to Czech. As a foundation material I used short story Agreeable written by Jonathan Franzen. The thesis is divided into practical part and theoretical part. The first, practical part consists of the translation of the whole short story Agreeable. The second, theoretical part consists of my analysis of the translation, which is focused on the problems I had to solve during the translation process. I comment on the choices I made, usually justifying by translation theories of Jiří Levý and Dagmar Knittlová. Metaphors in Partners' Calling

Diploma thesis Figurativeness of denominations in a partnership based on a questionnare survey deals with a discourse of figurative denominations in partnerhips. Firstly, the position of partnership denominations within the field of onomastics is defined and a general language characteristics of these denomations is presented. Further on, the main ideas from cognitive linguistics are presented, especially the conceptual metaphor theory which has been the basis for an analysis and interpretation of partnership denominations. These have been divided into several semantical groups in the context of which the partnership denominations are being analysed.

Toby's Room by Pat Barker - the translation and stylistic analysis of three chapters of the novel

The main aim of this bachelor thesis is to point out the most frequent problems the translators tackle during the translation from the English to the Czech language. This work is divided into two parts. The first one involves my translation of the first three chapters of the novel Toby's Room written by the English author Pat Barker. The second section, the theoretical one, is devoted to the analysis of the translation and particularly to the most common translation difficulties springing from morphological, syntactic and stylistic differences between the two languages mentioned above. The analysis of this part is based on the quotes from the theoretical literature, especially from works by J. Levý, Z. Kuffnerová and D. Knittlová, and shows to what extent the first part of the work follows the translation methods recommended by these authors.

Translation and analysis of Jonathan Franzen's Freedom

This bachelor thesis is focused on the problems which may occur, while translating from English into Czech, using as a foundational material a novel Freedom by American author Jonathan Franzen. The thesis is divided into two sections. For the purpose of the first, practical part, I have chosen two different extracts of the novel, one is taken from the middle of the book, the second one is the last part of the novel Freedom. The second section consists of my analysis, special attention is paid to the problems I had to solve during my translation. I comment on the choices I have made, usually also quoting from the books that deal with translation theories, I found especially helpful those written by Jiří Levý, Dagmar Knittlová and Zlata Kufnerová.
