Liturgical applied art designs in the work of Josef Fanta

Abstract The theme of this diploma work, that came out partly from the preceding bachelor work, which was dedicated to the art nuovo decor in Prague ecclesiastical milieu, is Josef Fanta's (1856-1954) designs for ecclesiastical purpose in the field of applied art, which have never been published so far. Josef Fanta is mainly known only as an architect, author of the Prague Central Station building and has never been studied in more details. The main aim of this diploma paper is trying to evaluate the almost 100 years lasting life and work. The chosen segment of his wide creative activities, ornamenta ecclesiae - liturgical textile and equipment, is suprisingly plentiful group including number of prestigious orders. Church of Virgin Mary's Assumption in Zlonice

This bachelor thesis on The Church of the Assumption in Zlonice contains a short history and development of the Zlonice village as well as the history of long-standing owners of the manor, the Kinsky family line. It is also dealing with the baroque church, which was most likely built according to a project by František Maxmilián Kaňka. Description of the church architecture with rich sculptural decoration by Josef Klein is also included. The problem of the autorship of the building is outlined as well. There is also a part dealing with recent history particulary with the neo-baroque construction changes by Friedrich Ohmann and Josef Fanta from the turn of the 19th and 20th century. These changes were crowned with arch field paintings by Adolf Liebscher. At the end of the bachelor thesis there is an anthology of restoration work performed in the 1990s.
The Personality of Josef Fanta and his Art Nouveau works

The Personality of Josef Fanta and his Art Nouveau works This thesis will deal with the personality and Art Nouveau works of Josef Fanta, who lived from 1856 to 1954. In the first part, the thesis approaches the personality of Josef Fanta and outlines his style of historicism. The main part of the thesis will focus on Fanta's works influenced by Art Nouveau during the period 1897-1932. First, it will deal with his Art Nouveau buildings in Prague and also outside the Capital. Attention will be focused on the Railway Station building of Franz Joseph in Prague, today's main railway station, the Hlahol building and the Cairn of Peace Memorial. This thesis also introduces Fanta's tombs, headstones and memorials. The thesis touch on his rebuilding of old historical buldings and his influence within interior design, particulary his designs in the Austrian pavilion at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris and his decorations for the visit of Franz Joseph to Prague in 1907. Lastly, this thesis will try to define Fanta's motifs in the Art Nouveau style and his interpretation of Art Nouveau.
