Transfer of Germans from the Šumperk region and its reflection in Moravský Sever Weekly

For my diploma thesis I chose the topic Transfer of Germans from the Šumperk region and its reflection in Moravský sever weekly. The aim of the diploma thesis is to analyze the media discourse of the expulsion of Sudeten Germans from the Šumperk region and the settlement of this area by the Czech population. For this purpose the thesis analyzes the content of Moravský sever weekly in 1945 and 1946. I chose Moravský sever weekly for the analysis as an important weekly within the region. The first part of the thesis deals with the development of Czech-German relations from the middle of the 19th century until the end of the Second World War. In next chapters I will try to briefly describe the expulsion of Sudeten Germans from Czechoslovakia and the settlement of the borderland by the Czech population. Finally, the theoretical part deals with the description of the Šumperk region and its history and demography with focus on relations between the Czechs and the Germans. The second part of the thesis presents conclusions of the content analysis. The media portrayal of the Germans in Moravský sever weekly was mostly negative and their expulsion was perceived as necessary. The German minority and the Prague Spring 1968

The proposed thesis The German Minority and Prague Spring 1968 focuses on changes in the life of the German population in the territory of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s. The thesis deals with an influence of reviving process of the Prague Spring on the progress of status of the German minority in the Czechoslovakia, which was marginalized by that time. The author presented a detailed analysis of those events of year 1968, which related to the national minorities policy and led to reception of the constitutional law Nr. 144/1968 Sb., about the status of the national groups in the state. The law acknowledges, for the first time in the post-war history, the same rights for the German minority such as for the other national minorities living in the territory of the Czechoslovakia. The author studies activation of the members of the German minority for the purpose of formation of the cultural association. That was enabled just on the ground of the aforesaid constitutional law. The cultural association was founded and incorporated, among the other social organisations, into the National Front in spring 1969. Periodical of the German minority in Czechoslovakia "Prager Volkszeitung" and Prague Spring 1968

The diploma thesis focuses on changes of the life of the German minority that was living in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s, in connection with the then press. The thesis deals with an influence of the reviving process, which is called Prague Spring and then the period of normalization on the progress of status of the German minority in the Czechoslovakia. The thesis presents events of the year 1968, that are related to the national minorities policy which led to reception of the Constitutional Act No. 144/1968 Coll., about the status of the national groups in the state. I also analyse the activisation of the members of the German minority for the purpose of formation of their cultural association named "Kulturní sdružení občanů ČSSR německé národnosti" (the Cultural association of the citizen of the German nationality in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic), which was enabled on the ground of the aforesaid constitutional law. History of the German minority in the village Lenora until today

This Master thesis deals with the topic of the German minority in the village Lenora. As the life in Lenora was very closely connected to the local glassworks, the thesis provides a brief history of glass in the Bohemian Forest and the glassworks in Lenora as well as the historical context in the country dating from the establishment of Czechoslovakia and the analysis of the life in Lenora. The thesis also describes the situation after the expulsion of Germans from Czechoslovakia because many Germans stayed in Lenora even after the expulsion due to their employment in the glassworks. In addition to the history of Germans in Lenora, interviews with several contemporary witnesses were made. After the expulsion, the population in Lenora changed significantly, which was the reason for dedicating one chapter to the topic of remigration. The last chapter informs about the current state of affairs concentrating on the society Heimatkreis Prachatitz administered by Germans who lived in the district of Prachatice.

Seeking Traces of the German Minority in Moldavia

In my bachelor thesis I will deal with a former German minority living in the territory of my country of Moldavia, in a historical area called Bessarabia. Based on professional literature, in the theoretical part I will describe the historical development of this German minority, which inhabited various areas of Bessarabia in the early 19th century. This German minority also had several well-known personalities who will be involved in the theoretical part. I gained a lot of information about German colonies when visiting Moldova, which I will describe in more detail in the practical part. Especially interesting is the pictorial attachment, in which I presented three different villages with the help of several photographs.

Manifestation of the German minority identity in the cemeteries of Medzev

This diploma thesis analyzes the identity of German minority in the town of Medzev (South Slovakia). The research traced the development of identity manifestation from the mid- 20th century until now. The aim was to discover what factors (historical events, homogenization politics, private motivation or randomness) influenced the representation of identity of the German minority in the local cemeteries. The cemeteries thus serve as a source of information about local German identity manifestation. The field research was carried out in 2016 and 2017 in Medzev, which is a town with symbolical value for the German minority in Slovakia. In the cemeteries the author analyzed the used language and names on the gravestones, as well as the position of the gravestones, their form and material. The qualitative research in the cemeteries was supported by biographical and semi-structured interviews with members of the local German minority. The main contribution of this project lies in the reconstruction of German identity manifestation in the local cemeteries in the course of last 70 years. The German Minority in the Czech Republic and its Thematization in School Teaching, Using the Example of the City of Český Krumlov

This bachelor thesis deals with the topic of the German minority in the Czech Republic and with how the topic is being presented in schools on the example of the town Český Krumlov. The first, practical part concerns itself not only with the history of the town Český Krumlov from 1918 until present day, but it also describes the joint Czech-German history of the town inhabitants from the time after the first World War until the post-war period. Furthermore, some specific topics like the origin of the name Český Krumlov, the Czech-German culture, the region of the Bohemian Forest or some specific aspects of the expulsion of the German minority from Czechoslovakia are described in standalone chapters. In the second, theoretical part of this thesis, I made a survey on the grammar school Gymnázium Český Krumlov, which was meant to determine how much the students of the graduating classes know about their own history and the history of Český Krumlov. Apart from the historical knowledge, the last part of my survey tried to find out whether the students enjoy learning German and how they view the langue itself. This was done because I find it interesting to show and compare how the German language is viewed by contemporary youth in a formerly exclusively German speaking region.

The History of the Village Rychnůvek from 1900 to the Extinction

The thesis deals with the history of the extinct village Rychnůvek. The focus is given especially on the events which happened in the 20th century and which have had impact on the following development. The first part of the thesis follows up the determination of the location of the village and its history since the 13th century. The second part describes the affairs and changes in the German speaking village. The stress is put on the year 1918, national-socialism, transfer after the World War II. and demolition of the village in the year 1959. In the last part we described destinies of particular persons, who lived in this village. We also analyzed the way how the community has been meeting since the transfer.

International Context of the German Minority in Czechoslovakia (1918-1939)

The subject of the following diploma thesis is the German minority in Czechoslovakia between the two world wars. The Czech Germans at this time played the specific role of a non-state actor of international relations; they became an instrument to dismantle the first Czechoslovak Republic. The Sudeten German question served in the diplomatic game as a test of the international power constellation in Central Europe at that time. Therefore my thesis is a case study dealing with situations where a non-state actor, in this case a national minority, can destabilize the international system, here Versailles, in certain international contexts and under certain conditions. The Czechs and Germans have been living together and managing one territory for centuries. Unfortunately, the combination of indecisive Czechoslovak politicians, the laws disadvantaging minorities, the harsh impact of the economic crisis in the Sudetenland and the geopolitical demands of neighboring Germany resulted in the separatist efforts of the Sudeten Germans. The aim of the thesis is to clarify the circumstances that led to the international interest in the Sudeten German question, in the presence of Nazi Germany, which controlled and supported these efforts. In this story, victorious powers have also played their part, which, by their policies of appeasement, have come to terms with the German rules of the game and helped the outbreak of the Second World War.
