Filter bubbles and the knowledge of filter bubbles among Facebook users

The media are an integral part of today's world, political and cultural events and are a key tool for creating worldviews. At the same time, they can also function as one of the basic building blocks for shaping the social core of a person, and thus also society and its values. It is necessary for the media to be the subject not only of ordinary conversations, articles and reports, but also the subject of study at an academic level. Facebook is one of the most dominant social networks today. At the same time, the developers themselves do not hide the fact that algorithms work on its platform, which monitor users' personal preferences and data, there are posts they spend the most time on, and based on this data, they create a personalized environment full of posts that the algorithms themselves deem appropriate. According to their own judgment, do the algorithmic practices of Facebook users lock them into information loops called Information bubbles, or do they only improve the quality of their time spent by filtering relevant or irrelevant content? The filter bubble and its consequences

The bachelor thesis focuses on negative consequences of personalized social sites called "The Filter Bubble". As for example, bachelor thesis focuses on Facebook, the typical social media platform which tailors its services to our personal preferences. The main question of the bachelor thesis is whether we are aware of negative consequences caused by filter bubble and how filtered information effects our worldview. The aim of this work is to introduces the term "Filter Bubble", evaluate benefits and risks and map awareness of the issue within a specific group of Facebook users using semi-structured interviews. Research uses qualitative method in line with Hendl J. (2005, 2nd ed.). Presented results of the research report how is the issue perceived by respondents and whether they are aware of the Filter Bubble. At the same time, the results present basis for a future research.

The media play an indisputable role in human life. Thus, we come across media communication daily in today's world. Online social networks have had a significant role in such communication over the past decade. The Facebook social network presents an example of such a phenomenon, which does not have a rival in terms of its size in the Czech Republic. It has rapidly become a communication media through which millions of people around the world consume various content. In recent years, this platform has been applying and continually adjusting its algorithm to provide users with personalized content. The personalized content is provided on the basis of the algorithm which evaluates what might be appropriate or interesting for people. From this point of view, this thesis called Filter bubbles on Facebook social network is examining the existence of a so-called filter bubble phenomenon. Society is currently finding itself in the middle of an information revolution, and only now begins to realize this fact. The primary currency in the new economy is user data and the enormous value is evident only to companies doing business with them. This thesis is dedicated to the protection of personal data in the context of the currently developing trend of personalization. Author sets out tools that make online tracking possible, compares the legislative regulation of the Czech Republic, the Russian Federation and the United States of America, evaluating the differences, trends, strengths and weaknesses in relation to the practice of creating profiles and behavioural targeting advertising. Subsequently, the author lists the additional risks of this trend for the freedom and privacy, lists general recommendations as well as recommendations for the users themselves to maximize the protection of privacy and personal data.
