Matějková, Barbora ; Ulík, Karel (advisor) ; Perottino, Michel (referee)
The bachelor's thesis "Paving the way for France's reintegration into NATO's military structures" explores the causes of the France's re-entry to the integrated military structure of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in 2009. The thesis considers three major reasons leading to this decision: change of the global security environment, position of France in NATO and construction of the Common Security and Defense Policy of the European Union. The thesis attempts to explain how the development in these three fields influenced France's relations with NATO and in what way they contributed to the final decision to reintegrate into NATO's military structures. By analyzing primary sources and secondary literature, the author examines development in these fields in the period between 1995 and 2009. The thesis is divided into four sections: the first chapter briefly deals with the nature of French foreign policy and French relations with NATO before 1995; the next three chapters cover the particular fields that influenced the relations between France and NATO that is the global security environment, French position in NATO and construction of autonomous European defense. The author concludes that three facts contributed to the decision on the reintegration into NATO's military structures: (1) due to the...
United States and Europe: the causes of the origins and decline of the regional hegemony strategy
Přikryl, Pavel ; Plechanovová, Běla (advisor) ; Karásek, Tomáš (referee) ; Kovář, Martin (referee)
American policy towards European integration process has always seemed equivocal: on one hand it actively supported and encouraged the process, but on the other hand it tried to contain some specific European ambitions and steer the process in a desirable direction. The objective of the thesis is to offer a possible explanation of the long-term US policy towards the European integration and European region in general. The dissertation presents a hypothesis that the American policy towards Europe since the Second World War until current times can be explained within the theorethical concept of "regional hegemony strategy". The concept builds on neorealist and neoliberal interpretations of hegemony, which are applied to the process of formulation of American grand strategy. It identifies a set of independent variables effecting the resulting strategy and operationalizes the expected strategy into particular goals. The empirical part of the dissertation then tests the established hyphothesis in two ways. In the first part it analyzes the identified independent variables and tests the causality betwen their historical evolution and evolution of the American grand strategy, especially in relation to the European region. In the consequent parts, it focuses on the American policy towards the European integration...
Political Economy of European Security: A Role of Industrialists in forming the ESDP
Vacík, Lukáš ; Střítecký, Vít (advisor) ; Bureš, Oldřich (referee)
The thesis aims to determine the scope and extent of the European defence industrial sector influence on the process of European defence formation, or more precisely in the field of defence and security cooperation (ESDP/CSDP). The question of the European defence sector's role in shaping the defence and security cooperation in Europe has not been properly explored, thereby it provides an ideal topic of choice for my thesis, The thesis is divided into three main parts: the introduction, the analysis consisting of five sections and finally the conclusion. The thesis analyzes an industrial sector itself, while exploring the process of creation of internal market within the framework of the Roundtable of European Industrialist initiative. It then moves on to discuss the European military industrial complex and it argues for the need to introduce a new term "European Defence Industrialists" in order to improve our understanding of defence cooperation in the EU. As for the thesis theoretical approach, a classical IR theoretical approach in general and classical theoretical take on European integration have proved insufficient. Therefore, the thesis explores the specific environment of European industrial sector with the aid of the liberal economics approaches. In so doing, it establishes that liberal...

Havelka, Ladislav ; Grmelová, Nicole (advisor) ; Korecki, Zbyšek (referee)
The aim of the thesis is to assess integration efforts in the field of European security and consider to what extent the Lisbon Treaty (effective from December 2009) will affect the future of the Common (European) Security and Defence Policy. The first part is focused on the history of security cooperation in the Western Europe during the Cold War. The second part deals with the evolution of security integration after the fall of the Iron Curtain, which has started convergency of European countries and gave rise to the European Union (EU). Changes induced by the Lisbon Treaty are mentioned in the third part, which decribes the ESDP/CSDP and crisis management. This part also describes the EU's response to the ongoing crisis in the Libya and outlines possible solutions to the crisis.
EU Operations as an Instrument of the Common Security and Defence Policy
Nechanická, Barbora ; Dubský, Zbyněk (advisor) ; Sršeň, Radim (referee)
The Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) noted a relatively fast progress during its eleven-year existence. Its main task is to deploy operations abroad. This bachelor thesis analyses their development emphasising the civilian operations. After the introductory general characteristic of CSDP the thesis deals with the tasks of the operations, military and civilian capabilities development and with the institutional framework including the changes brought about by the Lisbon Treaty. The practical aspects are examined by the case study of the police operations Proxima and EUPAT in Macedonia. Despite several shortcomings they can be evaluated as successful. The thesis argues that civilian operations are for the CSDP at least of the same importance as the military ones. Not only are they more numerous but also their ambitions are growing. The EU has become an important security actor, also owing to the civilian operations.
