"Šprechtíme" - Project for the support of German language in the Czech Republic

This thesis will deal with the project to support German Language in the Czech Republic known as "Šprechtíme". In the context of Czech language policy of the past two decades the author focuses first on the questions related to the creation, formation and promotion of the project. The author also aims to determine whether the project got into the subconscious of the Czech public (Prague and the border region) and whether it fulfilled the expectations of its creators. In this thesis both methods of qualitative and quantitative research (Interview, written questionnaires) will be used. The Age of Rudolph II because of Some German Written Documents from 1578-1598. A Historical and Linguistic Study.

The presented thesis deals with an analysis of five selected documents written in German and published by Rudolf II in Prague between 1578 and 1598. The textual source material therefore serves as an illustration of the German language used in the offices located on the Czech territory in the 16th century. The thesis is concerned with the political and social attitudes in the Czech lands in the last quarter of the 16th and at the beginning of the 17th century; the figure of Rudolf II and his relationship to Prague are also presented. Furthermore, the thesis mentions the main features and figures of the cultural life in Rudolfian Prague, alchemy and science, followed by a chapter describing Rudolf II's Prague office with regard to German as the language of the Prague office. The aim of the thesis is to textologically analyze the documents with a focus on their Macrostructure and Microstructure and therefore contribute to the research of the German language used in the offices in the last quarter of the 16th and at the beginning of the 17th century in the territory of the Czech lands.

Presented thesis deals with the personality of Czech-German author Karel Klostermann in the context of Czech-German relations. The structure of the work is based on the general outline of the cultural life in the Czech lands during the life of Karel Klostermann, then on the personality of Karel Klostermann and describes his career from the Czech-German viewpoint and on the work of Karel Klostermann in connection with the Czech-German issues. The aim of this work lies in observing the personality of Karel Klostermann and reflection of Czech- German relations in his life and work. There is captured within this theme the extent to which the author is perturbed by the Czech and German elements and to what extent this issue emerges in his work. The aim is also to depict the perception of linguistically non-homogenous society through the eyes of Karel Klostermann.

Communication and Language Management of Bicultural Couples. A Sociolinguistic Study.

This thesis deals with nowadays current issues: the communication of bicultural partnerships. The subject of investigation is primarily a process of communication, more precisely communication problems and causes of conflicts that may arise between partners with different backgrounds and native language. The basic question is what can cause these problems and what strategies the communication participants use to solve and avoid such problems. The theoretical basis of the thesis presents the Theory of Language Management. In the empirical part the obtained data is analyzed using both methods of quantitative form (questionnaire) and qualitative methods (research diary, participant observation and finally an interview).
On the Management of Multilingualism in the Multinational Companies in the Czech Republic: A case study in IT field

This qualitative case study deals with management of multilingualism at the workplace in a multinational IT company in the Czech Republic. The multilingualism at the workplace was thoroughly described pursuant to using qualitatively won data (semi-structured interviews, ethnographic observations, additional written material) without making preliminary hypotheses. Thematically, this study aims at the employees'origin and their language knowledge, languages and their influence on job performance and hierarchical ranking, internal and external communication (language problems, communication channel, communication strategies), official language, interpreting and translating, language courses, multicultural milieu and identity.
