Meaning of Tattoo in hardcore subculture

This work deals with the phenomenon of tattoo in hardcore subculture. In the theoretical part it reflects the transformation of the concept of subcultures in his historical progress, with an emphasis on the concept of style in the connection of the Center of contemporary culture Studies and post subcultural theory, especially the writing of David Muggleton. The diachronic perspective, this work also deals with the phenomenon of tattoo and its functions and meanings to it in today's society ascribed. An integral part of the theoretical part is to describe hardcore only in terms of its progress in the USA and in Czechoslovakia or Czech Republic, but also in terms of the side of music and shared ideology, which is the main key featuring to this subculture. Concepts described in the theoretical part are then used in actual research, which is conducted by using qualitative methodology. Exploration aims to describe the meanings and functions of the hardcore subculture and determine whether they are content and motivation ascribed to tattoo influenced subcultural ideologies, or whether it is primarily an expression of the contemporary individualistic discourse. Tattooed and Non-tattooed as a Different World

This bachelor thesis concerns the differences between the world of tattooed and non-tattooed. The text is divided into three parts, in the theoretical part the author explains the term tattoo and presents its brief history, and other terms and theories, which relate to the following empirical part. The second part is methodology, which describes the qualitative research which took place in terms of exploration of the topic, the third part is the analysis of the data itself, which is supported with extracts of the interviews. In this part, the author separately explores the view of the people on themselves and on the society and compares it with expert literature.

Body modifications as a cultural symbol

This master thesis focuses on body modifications, mainly tattooing. The aim is to present the tattooing in a broader context and show its link to many aspects of people's lives that was evident especially in traditional tribal societies before the colonization era. The attention is paid to the Maori culture and the Marquesas Islands because their tattoos used to have high art value and formed the inseparable part of the inhabitants' lives. At the same time it describes the up-to-date situation in the western culture, where the body modification is very popular. It also mentions the current tattoo projects happening in the Czech Republic. Information are taken from several books available in Czech, especially the work written by Martin Rychlík "Tetování, skarifikace a jiné zdobení těla" and many electronic books in English. Information about the tattoo and body art news comes from the websites where the interested people meet and write their observations and articles about the present events. The conclusion shows that body modifications and body adornments are as old as a mankind. They appear in all cultures and do not have only the aesthetic function. The journey of tattoos

Kristýna Tumpachová's Bachelor thesis goes into issues with tattoos and its transformation. The key theme of the thesis is mainly the history of tattooing, their function and their metastasis from the former, which began to appear in pre-literary cultures to the present. It also tries to find answers to questions such as "Did the fuction of tattoos totally disappear or is it vice versa?" "How do they get tattoos to kitsches?" It not only points to an aesthetic extent, but also to anthropological and social dimension and takes tattoos not as a product of a new generation, but also looks at it as if it has been a major and important part of every culture throughout the centuries.

The phenomenon of suspension in body modification context

The topic of this diploma thesis is body modification culture phenomenon called 'suspension'. It is a voluntary act of suspending a human body from hooks or piercings that have been temporarily pierced through the skin. Suspension is an age-old technique practiced for example by North American Indian Mandan tribe. It has been brought to the modern era and body modification culture by modern primitives. The part of the thesis is a placement of suspension to the broader sociocultural and historical context, there will be also space for development of concept of body, embodiment and pain in the western word and ritual aspect of suspension. The source for this work is mainly accessible literature, internet pages dedicated to body modifications and participant observation completed with interviews with people who had been suspended.

Body Modification in Cyberpunk,

The rigorous thesis Body Modification in Cyberpunk, Cyberpunk in Body Modification examines the intersection of these two topics from their mutual perspectives and monitors the extent to which they influence and shape each other. In its first part, the author deals with the representation, form and role of body modification in selected works of cyberpunk literature. The issue analysis is carried out by means of combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches. The author quantitatively evaluates 503 mentions of body modifications on a given sample of 7 major cyberpunk literary works, using 25 variables. The qualitative analysis, structured in 7 thematic areas, amplifies the qualitative findings. From the analysis results, the author draws definition of typical cyberpunk body modification, which she describes as invasive functional modification of the body that was created with the help of modern technologies. Based on this definition, in the second part of this rigorous thesis, the author focuses on the existing body modifications that meet these aspects. She creates 7 categories of functional cyberpunk body modifications, which she illustrates by examples.
