Jak se mi tam žilo? Životní styl v domově pro seniory: autoetnografie života v domově pro seniory
MATOUŠKOVÁ, Lenka
The thesis titled "How did I live there?" Lifestyle in home for the elderly: autoethnography of life in a retirement home, was focused on the description of life from my point of view in the Home of St. Elizabeth. The theoretical part contains the demography of population aging in the Czech Republic focused on South Moravian region due to the location, where the research was conducted. Furthermore I am specifying the terms related to the thesis, such as gerontology, geriatrics, home for the elderly, quality of the life and more. Also I am describing the lifestyle with a mention of the lifestyle of the seniors. In the practical part the results of my qualitative research, which are presented, were obtained from quality analysis. The aim of the work was to find out how to live in a residential facility for the elderly in my view within autoetnography. It was elected qualitative strategy, method autoethnography, data analysis, obtained materials, photographs, and observations. The results were analyzed by coding in the program Atlas.ti. I recorded the daily routine and all the activities, which I had during my compulsory practice. I coded these records and I noted them in the diagram and then I described the codes in the reference to the daily records. The text was supplemented with photo documentation from a normal day in the home for the elderly. The part of annex is a list of categories and resources used to create diagrams and transcribed daily records during the stay. The results showed that I was most affected by the isolation that affected my behavior and I experienced a lot of negative feelings. Furthermore, eating when were meat dishes served was sometimes difficult for me as for vegetarian. I had a hard time perceiving my departure from the facility, because I spent a lot of time here and became to be part of the team. I was excited about leisure activities and the rich program that was offered to clients. I actively participated these activities.
Social networks as an inspiration source or reason of lower self - confidence - What impact can Instagram have on body image perception
Pařízková, Veronika ; Hodboď, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Soukup, Martin (referee)
The issue of the ideal of beauty presented in the media has been a worldwide phenomenon for several decades. After the origin of digital media, interest in researching this issue has expanded even more, and researchers are coming to new insights and conclusions. Body perception and satisfaction are important factors in self-concept. The subject of this diploma thesis, which I dare not call pure autoetnography, but rather qualitative research using my own self-reflection, is to bring a new perspective to the question of the media's effect on the perception of own body image. Through in-depth interviews that describe in detail several experiences with various forms of eating disorders is to think about the impact of Instagram on this topic. The main conclusion of the research is that none of the respondents confirmed Instagram as a trigger of the disease. Respondents call Instagram as coercive and harmful at a time when their psyche is already broken in some way. In that moment, most respondents described this social network as toxic and dangerous. However, despite all the negative experiences that most of them describe in the research, and which I went through as the author by myself, none of the respondents came to the conclusion that she should leave this platform at all.
Ayahuasca neo-shamanic habitus in Czech Republic or what one has to do for becoming an ayahuasca neo-shaman
Herrmann, Natanael ; Kuřík, Bohuslav (advisor) ; Horák, Miroslav (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with what one must do in order to become an ayahuasca neo-shaman, or what specific ayahuasca neo-shaman habitus one must acquire in order to be considered a neo-shaman and to be able to perform ayahuasca rituals. For this the author used methods of carnal ethnography and autoetnography. Ayahuasca rituals are embedded in a broader anthropological theory of rites of passage and are examined in the framework of carnal ethnography by the method of observed participation, while semi-structured interviews with neo-shamans are used also. As part of the autoetnography, the author experienced a neo-shaman habitus on himself, which allowed him to easily look into the otherwise non-transferable structure of the neo-shaman habitus. This research has shown that there are three key parts for the ayahuasca neo-shaman habitus, ie the "ecstatic", "didactic" and "material", but their forms are different for each neo-shaman, due to their specific life trajectories. The resulting ritual is then the product of the specific bricolage of each neo-shaman and mixes elements and techniques of different traditions and cultures. Keywords shaman, shamanism, neo-shaman, neo-shamanism, ayahuasca, habitus, carnal ethnography, autoetnography, ritual, rites of passage
The become of pilgrim: Pilgimage as a proces of the construction of pilgim body
Picková, Tereza ; Spalová, Barbora (advisor) ; Kotyk, Lukáš (referee)
This work focuses on analysis of Europe's most massive pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, which I use as a case study to show how contemporary pilgrims understand their experience. Through the analysis of interviews with 9 other pilgrims and my own auto- ethnographic diary with a strong dose of reflexivity I want to show that pilgrimage can be understood as a process of constructing a pilgrim body. To gain such form of habitus, or in other words "to become a pilgrim", is achieved through several different strategies, such as walking, socialising, solitude, separation (from everyday life), asceticism, and others. This experience results in a form of gained habitus, or a technique of the body (Mauss 1968) which can be learnt and used in everyday life after the pilgrimage ends. Pilgrim body is then a complex skill, consisting of physical, psychical, spiritual and social dimension, each describing different aspect of the pilgrimage itself, all embodied in the physical body of a pilgrim. Through such approach I want to show, that we might understand pilgrimage as a form of physical experience with transcendental overlap, focused mainly on individual progress, but constructed together in friendly communitas of pilgrims, described by Victor Turner in his classic study (Turner 2004). Usage of these...
Sleep in the Arms of Anthropology: Social and Cultural Context of Narrowed Consciousness
Šťastná, Hana ; Samek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Abu Ghosh, Yasar (referee)
This thesis deals with the phenomenon of sleeping and its variations. It is the outcome of long-term field research and participant observation. At the core of my research is a sleep laboratory from which I freely venture into other fields. I draw not only on a number of interviews and observations but I also reflect upon my own physical experience with various sleeping modes or gained from the position of both the subject and supervisor of sleep medicine. By way of employing qualitative research methods I map the sphere of sleep as a social construct and its embedding as a value. I furthermore try to see how much the social construct of sleep can be influenced. I focus on the issue of the current value of sleep and the impacts on the formation of the social construct of sleep by society and a specific time period. I try to switch the perspective, too: my goal is to identify whether sleep is such a resistant phenomenon on the grounds of its biological essence so that it can withstand or at least moderate these forces. I take a theoretical recourse to medical anthropology and use it as my initial perspective. I employ the concept of biopower and risk society, as well as the methodology of carnal anthropology. Due to its inconspicuousness and hiddenness, I consider the phenomenon of sleep and other...
