Population differences in the distribution of HLA-B27 allele in ankylosing spondylitis
Lennerová, Tereza ; Hušáková, Markéta (advisor) ; Novota, Peter (referee)
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting mainly the spine and the sacroiliac joints. This disorder has a genetic background and is strongly associated with HLA-B27 gene which occurs in about 90 % of patients. The prevalence of ankylosing spondylitis usually correlates with the frequency of HLA-B27. The strength of association HLA-B27 with AS varies between different populations and is also distinct for individual alleles of HLA-B27 gene. Some alleles can increase a risk of ankylosing spondylitis while others may have a protective effect. This work deals with the population differences in the occurrence of HLA-B27 alleles and their relation to development of ankylosing spondylitis. Key words: ankylosing spondylitis, HLA-B27, allele, subtype, population differences

Title: Comparison of educational and compensation exercise programmes for ankylosing spondylitis patients Objective: The objective of the research was to determine the effect of two educational and compensation exercise programmes on the mobility of the axial system, the functional status and disease activity (including inflammatory process activity) in individuals with ankylosing spondylitis. Methods: The research group included men and women (average age of 35.42 ± 7.15 years), all out-patients of the Institute of Rheumatology in Prague. This characteristic sample (n ═ 38) consisted of respondents who were randomised into three groups: The first experimental group (n ═ 13) attended an educational and compensation exercise programme in a group setting in a gym (twice a week) and an educational and compensation exercise programme in the form of a group exercise in a pool - hydrokinesiotherapy (once a week); the second experimental group (n ═ 13) attended the same educational and compensation exercise programme in a group setting in a gym (twice a week); the control group educational and compensation exercise programme in a group setting in a gym (twice a week) received no exercise intervention but its members were allowed to use "passive" physiotherapeutic procedures (e.g. hydrotherapy or...
Biomarkers of subchondral bone damage caused by inflammation in axial spondyloarthritis.
Bubová, Kristýna ; Pavelka, Karel (advisor) ; Horák, Pavel (referee) ; Hrnčíř, Zbyněk (referee)
Background: Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is a chronic inflammatory rheumatic disease affecting primarily the spine and its adjacent structures. The disease is characterized not only by destructive joint changes but also by excessive osteoproduction, which can lead to gradual ankylosis of the spine and thus significantly reduce the mobility and quality of life. The pathogenesis of the disease is not yet fully understood, but a strong genetic background is suggested, along with dysregulation of tissue metabolism resulting from an imbalance of pro- and anti-inflammatory immune mechanisms. We are still lacking biomarker with sufficient sensitivity and specificity which could help to identify early diagnosis, to monitor subchondral damage, and to differentiate rapidly progressing patients. The aim of this work was to determine the levels of potential biomarkers of connective tissue metabolism, fat metabolism and new promising biomarkers for both disease subtypes, their relationship to disease activity and progressive structural changes. Results: We have shown increased serum/plasma levels of connective tissue metabolism biomarkers (especially matrix metalloproteinase mediated metabolites), which were able to differentiate patients with early and late forms of axSpA from healthy individuals (HC), were...
