Baroque domes and the St. Francis of Assissi Church in Prague
Sýkora, Petr ; Oulíková, Petra (advisor) ; Pučalík, Marek (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the St. Francis of Assissi Church in the Old Town of Prague as a building with the first true dome on a drum, constructed by Jean Baptiste Mathey who was originally a painter. Thanks to him Prague got a building that is architecturally as significant as Rome's St. Peter's Basilica. The thesis also researches the attempts to emulate Roman architecture. Architects active in Bohemia had been trying to construct a dome over the nave from the beginning of the 17th century. However, they only accomplished a true dome with the arrival of Mathey. Even Carlo Lurago, who was the best-known architect of the time, didn't succeed to place a dome over the nave, although he tried it on many buildings. Giovanni Domenico Orsi, on the other hand, managed to include a dome-like shape in his buildings, but many of his projects didn't survive to this day or remained on paper. Besides the St. Francis Church itself, this thesis also deals with Roman inspirations. The construction of this church wouldn't have been possible if Mathey hadn't brought with him from Rome the latest knowledge about Roman architecture and buildings being constructed back then. He was undoubtedly influenced by Carlo Rainaldi and other outstanding Roman architects who were active at that time.
The monastery in Žďár nad Sázavou in the first > years after its renewal (1676-1705)
Schutová, Martina ; Zdichynec, Jan (advisor) ; Charvátová, Kateřina (referee)
This thesis deals with the history of the Cistercian monastery of Žďár nad Sázavou in the second half of the 17th century, specifically from 1676 till 1705. In 1676, after almost four decades since the Cistercian Order had regained control of the seigniory in Žďár and the convent had been re-established, the monks were allowed to elect their own Abbot. Benedikt Zaunmüller, the prior of the monastery of Vyšší Brod, was elected and remained Abbot of Žďár till 1691 when he was forced to resign on health grounds. He was succeeded by Edmund Bagner, the first of the Abbots of the re-established monastery who was elected from the members of the Žďár convent and remained in office till his death in 1705. The scope of this thesis corresponds with the terms of office of these two Abbots who significantly contributed to the improvement in the economic situation of the monastery and the expansion of the personnel of the convent in Žďár and who are indisputably among the significant personalities of the Žďár Abbey. The outset of the thesis provides an overview of the available archival sources and existing literature on the topic. The first chapter outlines the history of the Žďár monastery from its establishment in the middle of the 13th century. The second chapter captures the transformation of the...

Leshkova, Olga ; Příhoda, Marek (advisor) ; Čermák, Václav (referee)
The objective of the master's thesis is to analyze the image of foreigners in Moscovian texts written during the Time of Troubles and soon after it in early 17th century. The thesis will also focus on the perception of foreign influence on political and cultural development of Russian state and society. Due to the fact that the perception of foreigners in Muscovite Russia can be regarded in many aspects as a result of traditional religious and historical thinking concepts which had been widespread in the country by the end of the 16th century, we will pay particular attention to the formation of medieval Moscovian thinking. By means of discourse and comparative analysis we will try to fulfil the following goals: 1) to study the religious and historical thinking formation process in medieval Russia up to the beginning of the 17th century; 2) to analyze various specific features of Moscovian texts from early 17th century in terms of foreigners' perception; 3) to put the issue of foreigners' perception into a wider cultural and historical context, especially with regard to appropriate literature and thinking tradition. Kříž, Václav ; Vodrážková, Lenka (advisor) ; Bok, Václav (referee)

In addition to that, it also attempts to add some new information about the local conditions in the Šumava town Vimperk and its near surroundings during the era of the administration of the Eggenberg family in the second half of 17th century. The structure of the thesis is presented by its two main parts, the historical one and the linguistic one. The first part of the thesis describes the Styrian dynasty of the Eggenbergs itself and its princely branch, acting from 1622 even in the area of the province of South Bohemia. At the same time, the exhibitors of the studied documents themselves, Anna Maria (1609-1680) and her son Johann Christian of Eggenberg (1641-1710), are introduced in detail. Subsequently, the situation in the town of Vimperk and in its surroundings between 1630 and 1719 is described and the activities and the production of offices during that period are also presented. The second part of the thesis focuses on the textological analysis of the external as well as of the internal characteristics of the chosen documents. On the basis of this textological analysis, the thesis tries to contribute to the...
German Language in East Bohemia in the First Half of the 17th Century on the Basis of the Diachronic Analysis of the Town Law Book of Rokytnice in the Eagle Mountains (1572-1666)
Jakubcová, Lucie ; Vodrážková, Lenka (advisor) ; Šouša, Jiří (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the diachronic analysis of the Town Law Book of Rokytnice situated in the Eagle Mountains. The work is divided into two parts. The first part is focused on the general introduction to the history of the city, the history of the municipal administration and urban books and the problem of the office language. The second part describes the analysed source, followed by its editorial and lexical analysis. Editorial analysis is focused on the records of purchase and payment in order to determine whether the types of text were written in a standard format. Lexical analysis is aimed at the legal terms. It was found that the unified pattern of the purchase record existed only within an individual scribe, not for the entire Town Law Book. Pattern of payment records varies even within the same scribe. From the editorial point of view it was found out that the legal terms in the law book were mainly described within the municipal administration and business terminology. On the other hand, Latin expressions were used only very rarely. KEYWORDS German Language, Historical Linguistics, Bohemia, 17th Century
