Czech Film Taste in Sociological Perspective

The aim of this work is to find specific preferences of Czech film consumers. By these specific preferences it is meant the type of stories, heroes or genres which does Czech film audience prefer. The analysis is made on the most popular films (i.e. with the biggest attendance) in last twenty years using the theory of Erving Goffman, especially his concept of frame analysis. By using the terms of frame analysis the content of the selected films is compared with the same amount of the most popular films in USA. This comparison is then used to find the differences or similarities among these two different areas, but in particular it is done to underline the specifics of Czech film audience. Stereotypes of interpretation of the Protectorate in contemporary film production

The diploma thesis Stereotypes of representation of the Protectorate period in Contemporary Film Creation focuses on the examination of stereotypical depictions of fictional worlds determined by a historical model in film production thematically situated in the period of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. The subject of the research is mainly gender stereotypes of fictional characters and stereotyping of the fictional environment on the example of costumes, masks, period props, musical accompaniment and other elements of narration. The theoretical framework of the work is based primarily on the findings presented in the Introduction to the Semantics of Fictional Worlds by Bohumil Fořt and by Narrative Ways in Czech Literature by Lubomír Doležel. The knowledge of stereotyping theory is drawn from Nick Lacey's Image and Representation: Key Concepts in Media Studies and Pierre Sorlin's Europian Cinemas, Europian Societies 1939-1990. To obtain the necessary information about filmmaking, the publications of Radomír D. Kokeš, The Analysis of Film and David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson, The Art of Film: An Introduction to the Study of Form and Style, were used. The Portrayal of Women in Czech Film in Times of Dictatorship

The thesis about The Portrayal of Women in Czech Film in Times of Dictatorship is examining the female characters in the movies influenced by nazi and communist propaganda. The main objective is to find out the similarities and differences that are typical for the Czech movies of those times. In the case of the movies influenced by communist propaganda and ideology, this thesis is examining those made in the period between 1948-1956. In order to analyse female characters, 15 movies were chosen for this task after making sure they fulfill the condition of woman playing the main of one of the main roles. The theoretical part of this work is dedicated to the anchoring of the topic, therefore there are sections about propaganda, nazi and communist propaganda, development of Czech cinematography and the role of women in nazi and communist ideology. For the purposes of analyses in practical part of the thesis, I use Jens' Eder model - The Clock of Character.

The diploma thesis focuses on the phenomenon of cult film, its theoretical definition, its history from the beginning to the present days, in world vide and Czech context. Another topic is the typology of cult films, selected cult directors. The other aim are fan activities, which are essential for the acquisition of the cult status of the film. The aim of this work is to reflect the phenomenon of cult film and to analyse selected Czech films in order to find out whether these films meet the cult film criteria according to the characteristics of selected theoreticians. The resulting analysis will confirm or will rebut my hypothesis and will show whether the use of the term cult film is accidental and has its backing in the Czech environment.
An Artistic Approach to the Film “1984“ Based on the Novel by George Orwell. Dystopia and Totalism in the Czech and World Cinematography.

The topic of this diploma thesis is the antiutopia and totalism in the Czech and world cinematography and it elaborates the proposal of an artistic approach to the film Nineteen Eighty-Four based on the novel by George Orwell. The theoretical part of this thesis deals with the definition of the relationship between antiutopia and totalitarianism, their characteristic features and how they manifest themselves in the cinema. This phenomenon is discussed in more detail in the folowing analysis of selected films in terms of their visual and production values. The second part of this thesis looks into the artistic approach to the film. The concept elaborates an urban design as well as individual exterior and interior sets and proposal of their designing.
Causa Kajínek: the media reflection. From reality to the film processing.

This master thesis, entitled Causa Kajínek: media reflection. From reality to movie interpretation deals with the life story of murderer Jiří Kajínek, who was sentenced to life imprisonment. He served his punishment for the murder of an entrepreneur and his bodyguard from Plzeň, which took place in 1993. Kajínek was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1998. His case was then turned into the subject of a movie. The Czech movie called Kajínek, directed by Petr Jákl junior, premiered in cinemas in 2010. The master thesis focuses on this movie and examines published reviews from the Czech press and professional journals. The thesis also analyses the media presentation of the whole case, with special emphasis on the years 1993 (when the murders were committed), 1998 (the life imprisonment sentence for Kajínek) and 2000 (Kajínek's jailbreak from Mírov prison and subsequent capture). The aim of the thesis is to present conclusions about this case, which is still the subject of controversy and polemics about Kajínek's guilt or innocence.
Government support of film industry in Czech Republic and its reflection on quality of Czech film made in the first decade of 21st century

The thesis presents system of state support of Czech film industry after 1989, it focuses on operation of The Czech State Fund for the Support and Development of Czech Cinematography ("Fund") in years 2005 - 2009. The aim of the thesis is to present complex information on what type of films (feature, documentary etc.) have been supported by Fund, whether and how is the amount of support related to commercial potential of the film, whether and how much the amount of support affects the viability of the film, whether is the portfolio of films supported in the year related to the amount of ňňFund's incomes or to composition of the Fund Board. For the use of the thesis there has been made a comprehensive summary of all projects supported by Fund. It contains information about producer, director, footage, year of premiere and type of the film. Part of the thesis is formed in comparing charts and summary tables. The thesis is based on primary sources as Annual Fund reports. Other more general chapters about forming legislative structure of Czech state cinematography support are based on relevant laws. Sociological Analysis of Sexuality in Contemporary Czech Feature Films

The following bachelor's thesis from a sociological perspective analyze sexuality in contemporary czech feature films. The film medium belong in sociology between the marginal area of research, especially in the Czech academic sphere. Therefore this thesis is trying to convince that it's reasonable to pursue this phenomenon with more intensity, because the given research can provide very stimulating results. The thesis explores the history and theory of sociological approaches to film. Furthermore it defines our theoretical and analytical view of human sexuality. Bachelor's thesis based on the social construction of reality and simultaneously rejects biological determinism. This theoretical background is created from the inspirational ideas of authors, such as are Michel Foucault, Jeffrey Weeks, Pierre Bourdieu and last but not least Laury Mulvey. From this theoretical basis it constructs consecutive methodological and analytical part. The thesis tries to reveal the dominant masculine and heterosexual ideology in the movies. Selected scenes are picked up to describe mechanisms (camera, editing, mise en scene…) which are used to construct sexuality and how the given ideology works in them. The Charecters of Teacher in Czech Films made after 1989

This thesis focuses on presentation of the teacher in Czech films made after 1989. Within the constructivist approach is the teacher character in the movie social construct presented to the viewer and it can influence the social reality of the viewer and then shape. The author analyzes the character of teachers in selected cinematographic works and then constructs ideal types, which compares with a previously created and modern typologies of teachers. Analysis of the film is focused on the way the teacher character in the film sees the profession of the teacher and what relationships has with pupils. In addition, monitors sociodemographic characteristics of the characters of teachers in movies. Based on the analysis of movies are constructed ideal types of teacher and then are faced with teacher typologies made by J. Prokop, G. Fenstermacher and J. Soltis, Ch. Caselmann and W. O. Döring.
