State Security in 1989
Procházka, Libor ; Vilímek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Štefek, Martin (referee)
Thesis wants to show how well the Czechoslovak secret police was informed about the activities, plans and tactics of the political opposition especially in the year 1989. The main sources for the paper are the authentic records of the State Security as regular situation reports, information on the security situation in the country, inside directives of the secret police, but also some documents of the Communist Party leadership. Text shows which were the most important activities of the independent initiatives in the viewpoint of StB and prove that the security forces of the regime seem to might have had (surprisingly) good information on the opposition initiatives. Paper is also aimed on some functional aspects of the State Security, which did not exist in a political vacuum, but was directly subordinated to the Communist Party. Finally, it describes changes in the organizational structures of StB, particularly linked to the reform in 1988. Key words: State security, year 1989, opposition in Czechoslovakia, Charta 77, Movement for Civic Freedom, Obroda, Democratic initiative

Procházková, Lenka ; Konrád, Ota (advisor) ; Vilímek, Tomáš (referee)
Bachelor thesis Opposition in the GDR and its Connection to the Czech Dissent. Mutual Contacts at the Turn of 1970s and 1980s offers a new point of view on the oppositional movement in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s, as it is based on the comparison with the oppositional movement in Czechoslovakian Socialistic Republic (CSSR). The work concentrates on the contacts between the representatives of the opposition from both countries and on the possible topics of their cross-border cooperation in the period between the Final Act of the Conference of Security and Cooperation in Europe in 1975 and the election of Mikhail Gorbachev as the leader of the Soviet Union in 1985. Although the traditions of the East German oppositional movement were different to the traditions of the opposition in the CSSR, there were intensive contacts between both groups (usually individual) at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s. One of the crucial topics of the East German oppositional movement was the question of peace. The space for moulding of the independent peace movement (and later also for other civic initiatives) was created under the protection of the East German protestant church, which was the only institution that was independent from the state structures. There was no such...
The sound to the everyday's life and thought of the middle class of society in 1970's and 1980's (Oral history)
Krákorová, Alena ; Vilímek, Tomáš (referee) ; Čechurová, Jana (advisor)
In my thesis I try to solve the problem of the everyday's life and thought of the middle class of society in 1970's and 1980's in the CSSR. I use the methods of the oral history and I work with narrators and their memories. The selection of narrators abided by advance criterions. All narrators had to be in the watched period employers of the ZPA !akovice. The selection was limited also by the age of narrators and working position (technical-administrative sector). I was making interviews with eight narrators that fulfilled all the conditions. Next to a free narration of each of them, main topics of interview were: some important historical events (1968, 1989), perception of the period called "normalizace", relationships between the people, national jubilee and festivals, travelling and recreation, family, leisure time and spare-time activities etc. . In my thesis I put brain to analyse and interpret the interviews and before that I try to explain my motivation and various expectations. The reason why I do this is that I try to find some general context which will help readers to create some visual angle, that they can use to understand my analysis and interpretations of the interviews. I enlarged the interpretations of two topics. The first: Perception of "West" and travelling in the period called...

Karafiát, Nikola ; Vilímek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Handl, Vladimír (referee)
Bachelor thesis "Cultural development in the territory of the former GDR in the period from 50th to 70th years of the 20th century with an emphasis in the field of the pop music" deals with the image of East German state's cultural policy towards the pop music in the period starting with the end of the World War II and the Soviet military administration of the area, comprising the period of construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961 and a brief liberalization phase in the mid-sixties, and ending in the fall of the seventies. An expatriation of the famous East German socialist singer and poet Wolf Biermann in autumn 1976 marks an end to the core of this thesis. It also briefly mentions the development in the other areas of East German cultural life at that time (due to the restricted number of pages only literature and art are mentioned).
CSSR/GDR opposition after 1968: a comparison of paths to opposition, mutual perception, plus views of the security bodies
Vilímek, Tomáš ; Kocian, Jiří (advisor) ; Bureš, Jan (referee) ; Otáhal, Milan (referee)
This thesis as submitted has been devoted to comparison of anti-regime activities in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic (CSSR) and in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) after 1968. It does not represent a complete survey of opposition movements in the countries subjected to comparison; more likely, it should be a comparative study focused essentially to three fundamental thematic fields. Following the outline of state of contemporary research in the matter, a survey of major (principal) archive sources and, last but not least, the methodology of elaboration of this theses, the author has been focused at the issue of typology of the anti-regime activities, without aiming to expand further the typological scale with new terms, for that one seems to be rich enough already. Rather, it accents the needs of mutual interconnection of these categorisation attempts with some individual aspects of the opposition conduct. Consequently, proper attention has been devoted to the issue of social anchoring of the opposition activities, as well as to a search of key factors of transformation; of a rebirth, in fact, of social refusal into opposition as such.
