Portrayal of female characters in the prose Maiden and Modest by Bernardim Ribeiro
Hrušková, Julie ; Válová, Karolina (advisor) ; Grauová, Šárka (referee)
This bachelor thesis analyses the female characters in the prose Maiden and Modest by the Portuguese Renaissance poet and novelist Bernardim Ribeiro. The novel is shrouded in ambiguity regarding its various editions and surrounded by legends about the author's life. In my thesis, I have focused on the distinct pro-woman perspective that can be observed in Maiden and Modest. The theoretical part of the thesis provides a summary of the historical and literary circumstances of the work's creation, including a chapter on the position of women in European society during the Renaissance. In the methodological part of the thesis there is an outline of the theory of literary character analysis, which I have applied to examine the female characters in the practical part. In it, in addition to a comprehensive comparison of female and male characters, there is also an analysis of the motif and meaning of beauty in the novel. It then concludes with a comparison of Bernardim Ribeiro's depiction of women with the way Renaissance women used to live in Europe and especially in the Iberian Peninsula.
Portuguese-Czech Dictionary of Brasilian Portuguese.Letter P, pages 886-926 from Pequeno Dicionário Brasileiro da Língua Portuguesa (p - pelechar)
Výstupová, Lucie ; Svobodová, Petra (advisor) ; Válová, Karolina (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the issue of creating a translation dictionary, which is exemplified here by translating Brazilian idioms into Czech. In the first chapter, this process is described from the theoretical point of view and focuses on the various rules that a lexicographer should adhere to while creating a dictionary. The procedures used for creating individual dictionary entries are described as well. Following the first part with a section dedicated to translated entries, the author puts the theoretical knowledge into practice. Translated Brasilierisms are based on the Pequeno Dicionário Brasileiro da Língua Portuguesa but are updated using the newer paper dictionary Dicionário Houaiss da língua portuguesa and other online resources and dictionaries. In the final chapter, the author comments on the problems she encountered while processing dictionary entries and justifies the solutions she chose for these problems. The greatest attention is paid to updating the entries from the default dictionary published in 1951. The entries were compared with entries from newer resources which resulted in the omission of some entries that had lost their geographical specificity. On the other hand, thanks to the greater number of secondary sources, many entries have been expanded to include additional...

Tůmová, Terezie ; Svobodová, Petra (advisor) ; Válová, Karolina (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on specifics of the part of speech of interjections in Portuguese language with taking into account possible parallels with the Czech language. The thesis consists of two parts, the theoretical one and the practical one. The first part focuses on the description and characteristics of interjections from different grammatical points of view. In particular, it deals with the formal side of this part of speech and with its meaning. A questionnaire in the second part should reveal any possible differences of the use of interjections between the European and Brazilian variants of Portuguese. The questionnaire is divided into two areas. The first area asks about everyday situations where native speakers are supposed to react with interjections. In the second area respondents fill in the sounds of animals and corresponding verbs to that.
Four Elements in Czech and Portuguese Phraseology
Truplová, Anna ; Svobodová, Petra (advisor) ; Válová, Karolina (referee)
The topic of this bachelor thesis is to assess the degree of equivalence between Portuguese phrasemes containing the four elements (water, earth, air, and fire) and their Czech counterparts. The theoretical part is dedicated to the Czech and Portuguese concepts of phraseology. Its historical development in both language areas is outlined, as well as the definition of basic concepts, criteria for recognizing phrasemes and their classification. Furthermore, this part of the thesis deals with the circumstances of the emergence of phraseology and its relationship with other disciplines. The theoretical part concludes with a chapter outlining the origin of the symbolism of the four elements. This is followed by the practical part, which consists in creating a list of Portuguese phrasemes and their Czech counterparts and afterwards examining their degree of equivalence. A distinction is made between full equivalence, equivalence based on the presence of the same base word, partial equivalence, idiomatic equivalence, zero equivalence and false friends.
