Nation Branding in the European Union: the role of Covid-19
de Meester, Mathilde ; Xifra, Jordi (advisor) ; Tomalová, Eliška (referee)
This research examines the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the Nation Branding of the European Union through the analysis of its digital diplomacy. On the one hand, the importance of public communication in the information age, the economic and political outcomes of image management and social media as a new strategic tool justify the social relevance of this paper. On the other hand, this work participates in the debate between the concepts of soft power, nation branding, public diplomacy and digital diplomacy. Moreover, if some research has been done in this field, its application to the supranational level and the impact of Covid-19 has not received much attention. Therefore, this research examines the following research question: To what extent did the Covid-19 pandemic strengthen or weaken the EU's Nation Branding? Using data gathered from Twitter on the European External Action Service account from the 1st of December 2019 to the 19th of June 2020, this research provides a study of the European Union's approach to Nation Branding during the pandemic. The content analysis presents a classification of the Tweets according to the 4-D Model and the Dialogic Engagement categories. Presenting Prague: Visions of a City through Western Guidebooks
Marcella, Jordan ; Tomalová, Eliška (advisor) ; Zusi, Peter (referee) ; Vykoukal, Jiří (referee)
Over the past 30-35 years, Prague has witnessed significant changes in its government, economics, and social policies. Following the 1989 revolutions, vast swaths of Westerners were allowed to visit the Czech capital for the first time. It quickly developed into one of Europe's most visited cities, boasting millions of tourists each year. This master's thesis is a case study that aims to use English language, Western published guidebooks to determine how Prague is presented to Westerners and how that affects Western perceptions into the city. Perception is not determined by a single factor and is influenced by numerous variables. This study seeks to highlight how guidebooks contribute towards the West's perception of Prague. It analyzes 17 guidebooks published from 1994 to 2019 and uses the various descriptive elements of each. The focus is on the narratives they offer and how those narratives change over time through the use of discourse analysis. The main question of this research is to answer how Prague's presentation in guidebook has changed over time, and how this affects Western perception of the city. What do Westerners think about the city? Is Prague a quirky place that is only notable for its architecture, or is there something else alluring about the Czech capital? How does Prague fit in...
The Role of Scientific Knowledge in International Policymaking: the Case of European Union's Science Diplomacy
Rosenheim, Adam ; Young, Mitchell (advisor) ; Tomalová, Eliška (referee)
Master's Thesis Adam Rosenheim Summer 2021/2022 Abstract Science has long been an integral part of the relations among nations and of foreign policy endeavours of states. However, the term science diplomacy is relatively new, meaning more theoretically anchored research needs to be developed. Additionally, as the current world's challenges increasingly require a broad international response based on sound scientific knowledge, the worlds of science and policymaking become more interconnected. This thesis, therefore, attempts to articulate its understanding of the concept of science diplomacy and then presents an innovative conceptual framework for the study of the term. The research later analyses the role of specific scientific knowledge in international policymaking in the concrete case of two biodiversity protection strategies of the European Union using the proposed conceptual framework. It concludes that the categories of the proposed framework are not definitive in the sense that they could be assigned to a specific piece of expert-based information when it enters the policy process, which would then retain the categorisation permanently. On the contrary, the research has indicated that the proposed categories serve as temporary designations of the specific information, which can change over time....
Henri Beyle as a public intellectual
Chrpová, Barbora ; Tomalová, Eliška (advisor) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
The term public intellectual has been used to describe the engagement of writers and other public figures in France since the end of the 19th century. However, this concept of engaging in public debate in order to influence public opinion has appeared decades before. In the first half of the 19th century, the French writer Henri Beyle, known under the pseudonym Stendhal, was active. Beyle's engagement in the cultural and political field was exceptional at the time as the active role of writers in society was yet to be established. He complies with similar characteristics that define intellectuals as Émile Zola, such as public engagement, liberal beliefs, or a positive attitude toward democracy. This thesis expands on the hypothesis that Henri Beyle can be viewed as a predecessor of the public intellectual. The intention is to examine Beyle's works and activities and to support this hypothesis with specific evidence. In the theoretical part of the thesis, the concept of the French intellectual and the criteria that define it are introduced. In the analytical part, these criteria are then applied to the role of Henri Beyle in order to find out to what extent his engagement fits into the idea of a public intellectual, as understood since the end of the 19th century. For the analytical part, primary...
Goethe Institut and German Foreign Policy after 1990
Vysloužil, Jan ; Tomalová, Eliška (advisor) ; Handl, Vladimír (referee)
This thesis focuses on programme strategy of Goethe-Institute in the broader frame of German foreign policy between 1990-2020. The theoretical part examines Goethe-Institute though the scope of soft power, public and cultural diplomacy. The development and the change of priorities of the Goethe-Institute are also outlined. Additionally, the independence of the Goethe-Institute from the German government is taken to account. A case study of the Goethe- Institute in Prague then proves a shift in priorities of the institute from bilateral Czech-German agenda to European topics. This shift is shown on specific examples of events held between the year 1991 and 2020.
