Possible causes of the increase of autism
Tomašovičová, Katarína ; Niederlová, Markéta (advisor) ; Draberová, Jana (referee)
This paper focuses on depicting potential causes of the increase in autism. The theoretical part includes a definition of autism, a historical development in the understanding of autism, a development of diagnostic criteria and their potential effect on autism prevalence. The differences between the global classification systems ICD and DSM are also described. Later, the difficulty of ASD diagnosis alone is discussed. The next section presents views on the etiology of autism which are divided into etiology on psychological basis, etiology based on genotype, and environmental etiology, according to operating factors. The last chapter of the theoretical part is for clarity devoted to the summary of the possible causes of the increase in autism. A research proposal which deals with advanced parental age as a risk factor of autism is also a part of the paper.
Discourse functions of imperative "look" and "listen" in comparison with their Czech counterparts
Tomašovičová, Katarína ; Dušková, Libuše (advisor) ; Šaldová, Pavlína (referee)
The present paper studies the English imperatives look and listen used as discourse markers. The study focuses on two aspects: firstly, to identify the factors indicating the primary function as opposed to the discourse function of look and listen in English, and secondly, to analyse the Czech counterparts of these verbs used as discourse markers. The paper is comprised of two main parts. The first, theoretical background, describes the grammatical form of the English imperative with focus on look and listen, the concept of discourse markers, the cross-linguistic studies focusing specifically on look and listen, the correspondence between English and Czech imperative, and the potential Czech counterparts. The second, empirical part analyses two hundred and three examples of the imperatives look and listen and their Czech counterparts from the parallel translation corpus InterCorp. Key words: imperative, look, listen, discourse markers, primary function, Czech counterpart
English counterparts of Czech adverbs (expressing respect and measure)
Tomašovičová, Katarína ; Šaldová, Pavlína (advisor) ; Popelíková, Jiřina (referee)
The objective of the present thesis is to analyse divergent translation counterparts of Czech adverbs; i.e. those cases, where Czech adverbs are realised in English by other means than the corresponding word class of adverbs. The thesis focuses on the divergent counterparts of the Czech adverbs expressing respect and measure. The Theoretical part of this study presents an overview of morphology, syntax, and semantics of adverbs in both languages. The analysis of two hundred and eleven examples obtained from the Czech-English parallel corpus Intercorp is carried out in the empirical part. The divergent counterparts of six adverbs of respect and five adverbs of measure will be classified and analysed with regard to their word class, frequency, and semantics.
