The Influence of EU Common Investment Policy on the System of International Investment Law
Svoboda, Ondřej ; Lipovský, Milan (referee)
1 The Influence of EU Common Investment Policy on the System of International Investment Law Abstract Extending exclusive European Union (EU) competence to foreign direct investment (FDI) in the Lisbon Treaty has had profound implications. The EU began to develop its own investment policy, including negotiating either international investment agreements or comprehensive trade and investment agreements with third parties. Taking into account the magnitude of the EU economy and the fact that EU Member States have concluded almost 1 400 bilateral investment treaties (BITs) out of roughly 3 300 in force worldwide, the potential of European influence over the system of international investment, based principally on BITs, is enormous. The aim of this dissertation is to assess how and in which way the new EU competence changes the system. The EU investment policy has developed a specific approach towards investment protection and investment dispute mechanism which does not envision content declared at its beginning. According to initial documents such as the European Commission's Communication Towards a comprehensive European international investment policy, the Union should have followed the available best practices of the Member States. Nevertheless, during the first bilateral negotiations with Canada and...
Theory vs. practicality - current state of television reportage on the ČT24 and CNN Prima NEWS channels with focus on the parlament election of 2021
Svoboda, Ondřej ; Lokšík, Martin (advisor) ; Géla, František (referee)
The goal of this magister thesis is to find out how much the current appearance of the genre of the "television news reportage" corresponds with theory. It also compares how much, if at all, it differentiates between the two main Czech news television channels - ČT24 and CNN Prima NEWS. The theoretical part describes the historical development of the genre, its current form according to theories and the "ideal" work methods of reporters. The practical part does not follow these problematics by the traditional way of content analysis, however - it instead tries to approach it "from the inside", through the optics of active journalists. Using grounded theory, it examines a sample comprising of six journalists, three from each media outlet. The target is to find out whether their view of the "reportage" genre corresponds with theory and whether or not they know about eventual connections. Using questions like "what makes a good 'reportage' in your opinion" or "what does your usual workday look like", it does not only confront theory with reality. It also compares the two media outlets in between one another. It mostly focuses on the experiences of chosen reporters during the parliamentary election of 2021.
Anomalous occurrences of arsenic in soils of the Czech Republic
Svoboda, Ondřej ; Drahota, Petr (advisor) ; Hojdová, Marie (referee)
This thesis aims to evaluate the anomalous concentrations of arsenic in soils (>30 mg/kg) of the Czech Republic. Anomalous concentrations are mainly caused by combustion of fossil fuels, mining operations and weathering of arsenic-rich rocks. The largest part of contaminated soil in CR is related to the combustion of arsenic-rich lignite, and includes, e.g., the area of Ore Mountains. The highest concentrations of arsenic in soil of CR are up to thousands of mg/kg. For example, soil adjacent to the Kutná Hora ore district contained up to 6 890 mg/kg of As. Such a high concentrations are due to mining operations. Beside anthropogenic sources, weathering of arsenic-rich rocks at Mokrsko has resulted in anomalous concentrations in soil that may attain up to 2 890 mg/kg.
Cloning, expression and characterization of recombinant growth factors
Svoboda, Ondřej ; Bartůněk, Petr (advisor) ; Živný, Jan (referee)
Cloning, expression and characterization of recombinant growth factors The role of growth factors and cytokines to regulate a variety of biological processes is ever increasing. Many studies have illustrated that this diverse group of proteins are capable of stimulating cellular growth, proliferation, survival, and cellular differentiation. This thesis mainly focuses on the cytokine interleukin-6 and its specific receptor (IL-6R). The IL-6R protein has been shown to exist as both a membrane-bound and soluble form. The soluble form of IL-6R (sIL-6R) signals via a mechanism called "transsignaling" that involves the receptor associating extracellularly with its ligand IL-6 to generate an IL-6/sIL- 6R agonistic complex. This complex subsequently binds directly to another IL-6 receptor, gp130 that in turn activates it to augment a specific response. It is known that the formation of the IL-6/sIL-6R complex can be greatly enhanced by converting it into a single molecule, called Hyper-IL-6. This fusion protein consists of a sIL- 6R located at the N-terminus and IL-6 at the C-terminus separated by a flexible linker sequence. It was more than ten years since human Hyper-IL-6 was first described and since then, this molecule has proven to be an ...
Reform of the system of dispute resolution within the World Trade Organization
Svoboda, Ondřej ; Balaš, Vladimír (advisor) ; Faix, Martin (referee)
This thesis the Reform of the WTO Dispute Settlement System, deals with urgent questions about the most important system resolution in international economic law. The WTO Dispute Settlement was established in 1995 and since then it has become a prime example of evolution in the field of international dispute resolution. The system itself has indeed its flaws and therefore its critics. Even its "founding fathers" indented to conduct a reform of the mechanism after few years in action. However, the reform has not yet materialised. The aim of the thesis is to discuss the state of negotiations over the reform of the system, in particular in context of power and rule orientation, and to analyze possible causes of the current state. The thesis is composed of six chapters. Chapter One offers brief characterization of the WTO Dispute Settlement and its main document Understanding on rules and procedures governing the settlement of disputes (DSU), which is found in Annex 2 of the WTO Agreement. Chapter Two chronologically follows the so far unsuccessful development of DSU Revision in WTO. In international trade disputes, two ways of their settlement are recognised: power-oriented and rule-oriented. Both methods are described in Chapter Three. The Chapter Four focuses on the institutional dimension of the...
Arsenic in tree rings at As contaminated sites
Svoboda, Ondřej ; Mihaljevič, Martin (advisor) ; Vaněk, Aleš (referee)
Kutná Hora and its surrounding environment was affected by mining Ag, later Pb - Zn ore, lasting several centuries. As a result of mining, extreme concentrations of heavy metals and metalloids, especially As, in waters, soils and plants are. The aim of this work was to study the elemental composition of soils and tree rings, including processes between soil and plants on contaminated and uncontaminated area to describe biogeochemical processes between soil and plants. Elemental composition (V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Sb, Tl, Pb) were determined in soils and tree rings of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) using ICP - MS. The measured concentrations of elements indicate contamination of soils and tree rings due to mining and metallurgical activities. The highest concentrations of As in soil (14 977 mg/kg) were found at contaminated site (Kaňk) at depth of 40 - 50 cm. This locality is situated on the heap, where waste from the mining and processing of ores are deposited, together with minerals and weathering products containing As. The uncontaminated area (Sukov) exhibited the maximum concentration of As in soils 124,38 mg/kg at a depth of 5 - 10 cm, due to the contamination by dust from the contamined sites. The highest concentrations of As in tree rings were determined in the contaminated area...
Stabilization of the flooded sand pit near Hulín
Tomšej, Lukáš ; Svoboda, Ondřej (referee) ; Šlezingr, Miloslav (advisor)
The diploma thesis assesses the current state of the Hulín gravel and sand plant and pays attention to abrasions of severely damaged banks of the reservoir. With the help of the design of a suitable biotechnical stabilization, the receding of the shoreline in the section of interest will be prevented. The basis for the processing of appropriate bank stabilization proposals is the results achieved using a method of determining shore retreat. The individual developed variants of the bank remediation solution emphasize the use of vegetation support, especially suitable bank stands to ensure the stability of the banks and protection against abrasion.
Historical reenactment as a cultural phenomenon
Svoboda, Ondřej ; Lokšík, Martin (advisor) ; Čeňková, Jana (referee)
The goal of this bachelor's thesis is to present the author's journalistic documentary Historical reenactment as a cultural phenomenon. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on defining the journalistic document as a genre, methods used during its making and a short introduction into the history of the perceived phenomenon. The practical and main part of the thesis is the documentary itself. Many of us have at least once bumped unto people dressed in historical costumes on the subway, on the bus or in the streets. If we discount fans of fantasy books and movies going to their meetings, it might have probably been a historical reenactor. A person, who dedicates their free time to reconstruct historical events and we usually meet them at city fairs. Most of their events, however, are closed to the public. Even though their original purpose was to break stereotypes and enjoy medieval times in the way it really felt. Every piece of costume, every weapon or tent are hours upon hours of work, searching in archives and sewing. The motivations of these people are the topic of this film. It also encounters their stances and hobby with experimental archaeologists, who are thanks to their jobs very close to the matter.
