Woodcarving in 13th century in Bohemia and Moravia. The chapters from the beginnings of woodcarving tradition in Central Europe

Řezbářství 13. století v Čechách a na Moravě dosud nebyla věnována velká pozornost a příliš toho o něm nevíme. Ještě před takovými třiceti lety by nedávalo příliš smyslu uvažovat o práci na podobné téma. Důvodů bylo hned několik. Některé řezbářské památky 13. století tehdy nebyly známy, jiné byly známy jen ze starých fotografií, další se nacházely v těžko dostupných zahraničních sbírkách a sakrálních stavbách a psalo se o nich v literatuře, kterou nebylo snadné získat. Ostatní sochy nebyly řazeny do adekvátních souvislostí nebo se předpokládalo datum jejich vzniku v pozdější době. O těch několika málo památkách, s nimiž mohli tehdy čeští historici umění pracovat, panovalo mezi odbornou veřejností jen velmi slabé povědomí.

Contributions to the study of the early modern period iconography of book covers

ln this thesis I explore 16th century book covers. The cover protects and decorates the book and is therefore treated in the following text as an inseparable part of the book. Since book covers have rarely been studied in the past, I have included below a section (Chapter 1) on existing literature - both Czech and foreign - on the topic. Thanks to Gutenberg's invention of a new kind of printing press, and thanks to new fonts, easier typography and unprecedented development of xylographic illustration (especially in Germany), the book changed beyond recognition in the second half of the 15th century and at the beginning of the 16th century. In addition to these profound changes, or - rather - as a result of these changes, the book became cheaper and began to spread among all social classes (Chapter 2). Moreover, it is by no means surprising that all these developments were to have a seminal influence on the book cover (Chapter 3), which became simplified and Iighter in comparison with what it had been in the Middle Ages. In the 16th century, all metal components - one of whose functions, incidentally, had been to protect the boo k - gradually disappeared, the only exception being small metal clasps, used to keep the books shut tight. Gothic mural painting in the church of saints Peter and Paul in Hosín

The following study is interested in the murals in the original Romanesque church of Saints Peter and Paul in Hosin, apparently the work of a single painter. The whole vault of the apse is painted with representation of the Holy Trinity accompanied by three saints, St Catherine is one of them, and the Vernic1e on the wall above the apse. On the south wall of the nave is painted the legend of St Margaret and extraordinary iconographical thema represents the scribbler with his assistent. The life of St Catherine is depicted on the opposite wall. The vault is covered by figures of angels. Legends are presented in small scenes arranged in bands, with lively narrative characters expressed in the jerky movement of the puppet-like figures. Painting were discovered m 1899 and date of their creation IS probably late fifties of the 14th century.

Catalogue of liturgical vestments of the Order of the Cross with the Red Star in Prague

Středověkým, renesančním a barokním tkaninám a výšivkám, stejně jako liturgickým textiliím, se začala v posledních čtyřiceti letech věnovat soustavná odborná pozornost, což je jistě záslužné. Textilní památky uložené v různých světových sbírkách či církevních institucích si toto "znovuobjevení" a následnou péči bezpochyby zaslouží, stejně jako pozornost laické veřejnosti. Mnoho z nich patří mezi nekrásnější a nejkvalitnější práce z produkce uměleckých řemesel. I tato diplomová práce se snaží, i když ve skromné formě, představit výjimečný soubor liturgických textilií, převážně barokních, z kláštera křížovníků s červenou hvězdou v Praze, které byly užívány k bohoslužbám v hlavním řádovém kostele sv. Františka. Tento řád vždy patřil k těm nejvýznamnějším v české historii. V čele řádu stávaly VYJlmecne osobnosti, které díky jeho jedinečnému postavení ve společnosti, často ovlivňovaly kulturní i společenské dění své doby. Hnutím osudu byli hlavou tohoto vlivného řádu v několika funkčních obdobích i čeští arcibiskupové. Bohužel nedostačující archivní prameny mi neumožnily zjistit více o spojení mezi představiteli řádu a jednotlivými kusy či ornáty v souboru.
