Christovová, Tereza ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Klabíková Rábová, Tereza (referee)
This bachelor thesis "The Semiosis of sexist commercials and the public discourse (the contest The Sexist Little Pig)" deals with the contemporary form of Czech sexist advertisements and reactions that such advertisements generate. The majority of sexist advertisements work, to the objection of various feminist movements, with simplified and distorted images of women. Their critisism is mostly aimed at those advertisements that depict women in a stereotyped way. According to them, those advertisements may cause or evoke a sense of shame or humiliation, insult human dignity or even provoke violence against women. The independent socio-ecological movement NESEHNUTÍ is one of those who grapple with sexist advertising and the problems associated with it. It has already organized two rounds of the annual competition "The Sexist Little Pig" for the most sexist advertising in the Czech Republic. This thesis aims to explore selected advertisements that have been submitted to the competition by the Czech public and detects concrete sexist distortions in them that exploit both women and men. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part deals with theoretical resources, such as theories of gender, sexism and stereotyping, as well as with the regulation of advertising in the Czech Republic. The second...

Persuasive techniques in lifestyle magazines and their effect on lifestyle-forming : content analysis of Spy magazine
Jeřábek, David ; Klabíková Rábová, Tereza (referee) ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor)
Bachelor thesis "Persuasive techniques in lifestyle magazines and their effect on lifestyle-forming : content analysis of Spy magazines" generally deals with media effects on audiences. It introduces the historic development of perspectives on mass media and mass communication and the effects of media and their research. In particular it focuses on the effects of the so-called lifestyle media on the lifestyle and identity of mainly younger consumers of media products. It specifically evaluates the way in which such media present potentially harmful content. It describes typical persuasive techniques used by media in advertising, political campaigning and other types of content. It introduces main outlooks on the topics of lifestyle and identity from media and sociological perspectives. It describes the most significant methods of media content research, namely, qualitative and quantitative content analysis from the historic and methodological point of view. Using a combination of these two techniques it attempts to verify the research hypothesis predicting that media utilize persuasive techniques to present attitudes and opinions which are not immediately obvious and subsequently manipulate audiences into assuming particular patterns of behavior and thinking.
Czech internet literary criticism
Kučera, Štěpán ; Klabíková Rábová, Tereza (referee) ; Kraus, Jiří (advisor)
This diploma thesis surveys Czech literary criticism on the internet and its relationship towards the printed literary criticism, or generally, the relationship between new and traditional media. I define what "Czech literary criticism on the internet" can mean and describe its situation in 2009. I created an imaginary central line going from the terminal of traditional media to the terminal of new media. I lined the websites from the ones tightly connected to the traditional terminal (e. g. web magazines) to the ones in the purely "net terminal" (e. g. discussion servers). I found important projects there that exist in the periphery of Czech literary life (as reflected by the traditional media). Then I asked members of the web projects to fill in a short questionnaire focused on the literary criticism on the internet and its relationship to the culture of traditional media. Also, I posed the same questions to Czech book publishers as representatives of the traditional culture. I found out that the publishers' relationship towards the new media critics is "slightly optimistic" but at the same time ambivalent and distrustful. On the other hand the survey among members of web projects revealed that for these people the internet publication is as valid as a publication in printed media but still they are aware...
