The neolithic site Tuchlovice, distr. of Kladno
Knotová, Hana ; Popelka, Miroslav (advisor) ; Stolz, Daniel (referee)
The submitted work deals with processing of primarily neolithic settlement material from the archaeological research in Tuchlovice cadaster. The research led by M. Buchvaldek took place in 1960. The excavated settlement was dated to the III. degree of the Linear Pottery culture and to the II.-III. degree of the Stroked Pottery culture. One object belonged to jordanov culture period. Continuity of habitation cannot be proved, which may be caused by the limited scale of the research that couldn't explore the whole settlement. On the contrary we must admit the possibility that presented site formed part of a larger neolithic settlement area together with settlements explored earlier in the southwestern direction. The Eneolithic site Líbeznice, distr. of Prague - East
Sosnová, Anežka ; Dobeš, Miroslav (advisor) ; Popelka, Miroslav (referee)
The polycultural settlement area in Libeznice (Prague-East district) represents a relatively large complex of many different settlement structures, mostly of Funnel Beaker culture and Hallstat period, as well as three Unetice culture tombs and a skeleton burial probably of La-Téne period. An archaeological excavation, which was caused by the construction of a ring road, took place in the years 2008 and 2009. During the works several dozens of settlement structures of Funnel Beaker culture were uncovered - a large open settlement with more than ten long houses. In this thesis a chosen group of sixteen settlement structures is dealt with and published and its ceramic artefacts are analysed in detail. On the basis of its morphological features was this settlement dated to the younger period of Funnel Beaker culture, i.e. to the salzmünde phase. This study is extended with several introductory chapters summarizing the up-to-date scholarship on Czech Early and the beginning of the Middle Eneolithic periods to enable the better global understanding and the clearer wider context of the artefacts and structures of this settlement. The Stroked pottery site Jaroměř in the light of the settlement of eastern Bohemia in the younger neolithic
Burgert, Pavel ; Popelka, Miroslav (advisor) ; Zápotocká, Marie (referee)
The present work describes the results of processing the excavations obtained during the research of habitation at a Stroke-ornamented ware culture in Jaroměř (Náchod county). The inner chronology of the habitation was studied using spatial relation analysis and the study of the ceramic collection. Through the study of the stone tools, the habitation was set within the wider distribution relationships of the region and it was also possible to observe the manufacturing activity in the researched location. With the help of the ceramic remains, three residential phases were identified which correspond with the shift between the older and the younger degree of culture. This chronology also corresponds with the changing building tradition of the houses of the habitation. The existence of an independent manufacturing region was not proved. The present study looks at the form of the pottery at an important time when the Lengyel influence started to permeate from Moravia to Bohemia. A funnel beaker settlement at Velké Přílepy
Juřinová, Šárka ; Popelka, Miroslav (advisor) ; Dobeš, Miroslav (referee)
A large, unfortified settlement in an open position with Funnel Beaker culture in Velké Přílepy (district of Prague - west) represents one of the most important early Eneolithic period sites in Bohemia. Archaeological excavations conducted in 1994-99 uncovered over sixty structures dating to the period of Funnel Beaker culture. This study addresses the processing of a selected group of fourteen structures. On the basis of a detailed evaluation of pottery material, the relevant morphological features were used to classify the local settlement in the Siřem phase of the aforementioned culture. For the purpose of reaching a clearer understanding of the importance of the described location and its inclusion in the broader context of the settlement structure of the early Eneolithic period, the study also includes a general overview of the development of Funnel Beaker culture in Bohemia and Moravia.
Gender analysis in the interpretation of sociocultural aspects of the Neolithic
Remišová Věšínová, Kamila ; Popelka, Miroslav (advisor) ; Podborský, Vladimír (referee) ; Pavúk, Juraj (referee)
Gender is a social construct expressing that attributes and behavior connected with the image of man and woman are generated by culture and society. Unlike sex, a universal category that does not change with time and space, gender shows that the determination of roles, behavior and social norms connected with men and women differs within various societies, time periods and social groups. Archaeology is a culturally and historically conditioned scientific discipline though it quite often fails to remember its cultural basis. Its main task, the research in cultural and social structure of ancient populations, is a very complicated task and its outcome is often uncertain for there is no possibility of feedback. Archaeology, same as all other humanities, cannot claim fully objective scientific results. However, in its essence tied with exploring the life of ancient populations, it strives for objective findings and thus it necessarily has to focus on material culture, namely its expressions and its embedment in social structures. It is only material culture that can mediate dependable results. But if material culture is not interpreted as embedded in a cultural and social context, it becomes an unfruitful source with zero informational value. Thanks to new approaches, theories and methods that have emerged...
Men and caves in the Neolithic Period
Peša, Vladimír ; Popelka, Miroslav (advisor) ; Svoboda, Jiří (referee) ; Pavlů, Ivan (referee)
Men and Caves in the Neolithic Period Vladimír Peša ABSTRACT From the beginning of archaeological excavations in the 19th century up to the present day, caves as archaeological sites have most often been interpreted as longer- or shorter-term settlements, hideaways or shelters for herdsmen; other interpretations that are considered for caves are cult functions and shelters for social outcasts. I see the beginnings of these notions of universal functions for caves in two contexts. Up until the second half of the 20th century there was a predominant interest throughout most of Europe in Palaeolithic history, and an interpretive model of Palaeolithic cave settlement was subsequently applied to frequently less distinct or even different find situations dating to post-Mesolithic periods. Secondly, at the close of the 19th century caves in the general consciousness of society (i.e. including archaeological) were mainly thought of as warfare shelters or as cover from inclement weather during agricultural activities away from the settlement. Speculation on the greater importance of cult activities and the symbolism of caves doesn't appear with greater regularity in literature until the 1980s; and yet, the settlement impression of caves persists. Using the Neolithic period as an example, the submitted work attempts...
The introduction to the bronze studies in Cambodia
Seang, Rosath ; Popelka, Miroslav (advisor) ; Bláhová, Zuzana (referee)
AJ The work is paid to the study of the Bronze Age in the territory of Cambodia. This period is dated from the year 4000. Study of the Bronze Age in Cambodia, located in the lowlands in Southeast Asia, has long been influenced by the fact that the country was in the years 1865 - 1953 French colony. And yet they were the first archaeological excavations of prehistoric loklait made in Cambodia earlier than in other countries in East and Southeast Asia. Representative of the French protectorate in Cambodia Lieutenant Jean Moura, led by a focus on prehistoric monuments, won the research in 1864, stone tools at the site near the river Samrong Sen Chinita. The findings were later moved to study in France. Samrong Sen and the location was again examined in the years 1878-1879. This was practically initiated the study of the Bronze Age in Cambodia. The present study deals with a detailed description of the geography of Cambodia, the composition of the population, society, religion and language peculiarities. The basis of the work is characteristic of the major archaeological sites of the Bronze Age, classifications and technical analysis finds of bronze objects. The work can be seen as a first overview study of the Bronze Age in the territory of Cambodia.
The hilltop site of Baba, Prague 6 - Dejvice. Prehistoric settlement and new evidence of it
Jiříček, Jan ; Dobeš, Miroslav (referee) ; Popelka, Miroslav (advisor)
The Baba hilltop in Dejvice, Prague 6 is a morphologically distinct hilltop, located at a strategie confluence of the Vltava river and the Šarecký stream. Thanks to this, its prehistoric inhabitants had a very good view over the activities going on in Prague's residential areas, especially over the important trail on the Vltava river or along its banks. Due to to the promontory character of the hilltop, its inhabitants could enjoy the advantage of great defense possibility and dominance in the region. lt is natural that in prehistory Baba was populated and served to its neighborhood as a place of central significance. The first part of this thesis assesses the natural background of the area and overviews the existing research at the site. lt focuses mainly on the research carried out between 1974 and 1978, which forms the basis of our present knowledge of the Baba settlement, and also on the new research of 2004 that came up with new documentations of the settlement. The next part of the thesis describes the particular stages of the settlement process and interprets various residential elements. The oldest settlement documented on the hilltop is from the period of the Funnel Beaker Culture (FBC), dated between its third and fourth stage. The plantation which had extended here and was discovered during the...
Settlement Finds of the Middle to Late Bronze Age Tranzition in the Region of Kroměříž, Moravia
Dr. Miroslava Buchvaldka. Po vyhodnocení budou nálezy uloženy do sbírek...
