Willingness to pay for streaming services: Evidence from the Czech Republic
Strnadová, Ivana ; Polák, Petr (advisor) ; Kučera, Adam (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to analyze the consumers' willingness to pay for subscription- based video streaming services in the Czech Republic. With the unique data collected via self-developed questionnaire both the willingness to pay and the maximum price that consumers would be willing to pay for such services is examined. Using the logistic regression, variables that have a significant effect on the probability of subscribing were identified. These include the age, education level, preference for original sound and Czech movie production, online payments, purchase of an electronic movie, number of devices used, cinema visits, favouritism of movies over TV shows, satisfaction with the content offered by common broadcasting stations and desire for spatial mobility when accessing video content. Similar results were obtained when predicting the price using OLS. Additionally a previous purchase of a physical medium and the income level were found significant. Based on demand estimation this thesis also suggests that from the provider's perspective the optimal profit maximization price for streaming services should be set in the range from 218 to 283 CZK.

Lacko, Radoslav ; Polák, Petr (advisor) ; Žáček, Jan (referee)
Charles University Faculty of Social Sciences Institute of Economic Studies MASTER'S THESIS The Elasticity of Demand for Gasoline: Evidence from the Czech Republic Author: Bc. Radoslav Lacko Supervisor: Mgr. Petr Polák MSc. Academic Year: 2018/2019 Abstract Studying the price responsiveness of the fuel demand is popular topic among researchers. The price elasticity is used for predicting future tax revenues, or fuel consumption under various situations. This thesis focuses on elasticity estimation for the Czech Republic using high frequency evidence. We use the process of data mining to get the Czech evidence. Observed elasticity differs by the data aggregation level. Estimated long-run elasticity range between −0.38 and −0.68 for gasoline users and between −0.43 and −0.54 for diesel users. Much lower elasticity was estimated in the short-run that confirms economic theory. Portfolio optimization for an P2P investor on Zonky
Jonáš, Filip ; Polák, Petr (advisor) ; Máková, Barbora (referee)
This thesis analyzes the Czech peer-to-peer lending platform Zonky. The goal was to find the optimal portfolio for a risk-averse investor investing in Zonky loans. For this purpose, the Modern portfolio theory from Markowitz was used. Based on the provided loan book containing information about loans which Zonky has provided since its foundation we examined the statistical properties of the individual risk categories represented by the interest rate charged. The optimization was done using the Excel Solver tool assuming that the loan categories are uncorrelated as well as considering the correlation we found using the variance- covariance matrix. For both cases, the portfolio minimizing the standard deviation as well as the portfolio which maximizes the Sharpe ratio was found. Generally, both types of portfolios were comprised mainly of loans with lower interest rate. According to our results, it seems that such loans offer better relationship between risk and return compared to categories which are riskier. Also, we showed that the platform's recovery rate has a significant impact on the performance of the loan categories especially of those which are among the riskiest. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the correlation between individual risk categories should not be ignored when a portfolio...
Smoking ban: A data analysis of sales
Luu Danh, Tiep ; Polák, Petr (advisor) ; Smutná, Šarlota (referee)
1 Abstract Smoking ban and VAT Fiscalization are the two most recent acts that were causing a nuisance for hospitality industry. In this thesis, the effect of the smoking ban on the restaurant sales is analyzed. The analysis research, whether sales were significantly affected based on monthly Czech Statistical Office time series and on daily VAT Fiscalization time series. That way, not only the smoking ban is inspected, but also the potential benefit of VAT Fiscalization as a data sampling tool for policy evaluation is taken into the question.
Strategic Management of a Project Portfolio in a Consulting Firm
Ratajová, Kristina ; Balcar, Petr (advisor) ; Polák, Petr (referee)
The main goal of this thesis is to contribute to the understanding of project management and project portfolio management with focus on the processes, individual tasks within each process, methods and tools. It also serves as an analysis of project-based consulting firm. Project management might seem as an unnecessary cost to the firm. However, the costs resulting from undelivered projects or projects delivered in poor quality would significantly exceed those costs paid for project management. The firm is analysed in a form of a case study with a combination of semi-structured interviews, analysis and visualization of relevant data and comparison to the best prac- tices. Two specific projects are analysed in depth and project portfolio performance of one team is evaluated. The detailed analysis provides demonstration of project management methodologies and proves its importance. It shows the correct procedures in the firm as well as inefficien- cies and rooms for improvement. Furthermore, it shows practices of managing multiple projects at once in order to reach balanced portfolio and maximize its profitability. 1
Satellite Model Accuracy in Bank Stress Testing
Hamáček, Filip ; Polák, Petr (advisor) ; Pečená, Magda (referee)
Satellite Model Accuracy in Bank Stress Testing Abstract Filip Hamáček January 4, 2019 This thesis is dealing with credit risk satellite models in Czech Republic. Satellite model is a tool to predict financial variable from macroeconomic vari- ables and is useful for stress testing the resilience of the banking sector. The aim of this thesis is to test accuracy of prediction models for Probability of De- fault in three different segments of loans - Corporate, Housing and Consumer. Model currently used in Czech National Bank is fairly unchanged since 2012 and its predictions can be improved. This thesis tests accuracy of the original model from CNB by developing new models using modern techniques, mainly by model combination methods: Bayesian Model Averaging (currently used in European Central Bank) and Frequentist Model Averaging. Last approach used are Neural Networks. 1
Estimating performance of classifiers from dataset properties
Todt, Michal ; Polák, Petr (advisor) ; Baruník, Jozef (referee)
The following thesis explores the impact of the dataset distributional prop- erties on classification performance. We use Gaussian copulas to generate 1000 artificial dataset and train classifiers on them. We train Generalized linear models, Distributed Random forest, Extremely randomized trees and Gradient boosting machines via H2O.ai machine learning platform accessed by R. Classi- fication performance on these datasets is evaluated and empirical observations on influence are presented. Secondly, we use real Australian credit dataset and predict which classifier is possibly going to work best. The predicted perfor- mance for any individual method is based on penalizing the differences between the Australian dataset and artificial datasets where the method performed com- paratively better, but it failed to predict correctly. 1
Willingness to pay for e-books in the Czech Republic
Tomášková, Lenka ; Polák, Petr (advisor) ; Votápková, Jana (referee)
The aim of this bachelor thesis is to explain willingness to pay for electronic books in the Czech Republic. Data were collected via online questionnaire. Using the logit model, following variables were identified to have significant influence on probability of buying an e-book. These variables are ownership of an e-book, online shopping, membership in the library, buying printed books, physical appearance of book and thinking about e-books as electronic documents which should be for free. Moreover, in case of printed book's price equals 270 CZK, respondents are willing to pay 132 CZK in average for an electronic version of the same title. School bullying and its effect on children's academic performance in the Czech Republic
Kalendová, Tereza ; Chytilová, Julie (advisor) ; Polák, Petr (referee)
A safe school environment is a crucial aspect for sustainable educational quality as well as for promoting students' academic performance. One of the factors damagingly affecting school environments is school bullying. Researchers investigating bullying problematic have revealed many negative consequences of bullying on students' general well-being, including its adverse effect on school performance. The thesis aims to investigate the impact of school bullying on student's academic achievement in the Czech Republic, using mathematics test score results of fourth grade students from TIMSS 2015. In the first stage, we use ordinary least squares (OLS) regression controlling for a number of student's background variables. As the estimates obtained from this method might be biased due to endogeneity issues, we apply non-parametric technique propensity score matching (PSM) in the second stage. Our findings suggest that school bullying has a significant negative effect on students' mathematics test scores. However, the effect loses its significance as the frequency of bullying decreases. The PSM technique yield similar estimates as the OLS. The results indicate that Czech educators and policymakers should take into account bullying as an important determinant of pupils performance and enhance...
