How Did Sport Journalism Change in Czechoslovakian Press after 1948? Comparing Periods 1945-1948 and 1953-1958

Master's thesis called How Did Sports Journalism Change in Czechoslovakian Press after 1948? Comparing Periods 1945-1948 and 1953-1958 deals with the development and comparison of sports journalism in post-war Czechoslovakia and through the qualitative content analysis of three selected sports periodicals (Ruch v tělesné výchově/Ruch v tělovýchově a sportu, Stadion, Československý sport). Research focuses on media reports, graphic and language changes and organizational development of the periodicals. Secondary subjects are the fate of selected editors, the post-war development of the Sports Journalists Society and the unification of physical education movement. The author used the rich archive material of individual editions of sports periodicals and sources from the National Archives. Secondarily he used the review literature on media development and journalism after World War II, using historical monographs to analyze the historical context that is absolutely crucial to understanding post-war developments in Czechoslovakia and the press.
Kretinsky's bag, media image of Czech football scandal

This paper aims to describe the media picture of the alleged match fixing in the Czech football league that has commenced in September 2012. The allegation reached the chairman of Czech FA from the owner of Sparta Prague, Daniel Kretinsky. The time frame observed is set between the initial controversy in Pilsen-Sparta Prague game where David Limbersky's dive and the subsequent penalty secured three points for the home side and 1 February 2013 when the disciplinary committee of the Czech FA announced that any conclusions shall be drawn from police investigation only. This paper is based on the observations from the following media: Czech Press Agency (CTK) - the largest press agency on the local media market, Sport Daily - the only print media in Czech Republic focused solely on sport and Aktualne.cz - an online news portal containing a sports section with Ludek Madl as the editor-in-chief (who has himself received Journalist Quail in 2005 for uncovering corruption in Czech football).
Star - sport magazine of the first czechoslovak republic

This bachelor thesis aims to illuminate evolution of sports illustrated magazine Star, which was published in years 1926-1938 in Czech publishing house Melantrich. Magazine Star was also used to illuminate the situation of Czech sports journalism in 1920' and 1930'. Thesis describes the very beginning of Star and also clarifies its extinction right before signing of the Munich Agreement by Great Britain, France, Germany and Italy. It also focuses on sports journalists, who had the main impact on this magazine, and several important Czech and world famous athletes, whose articles were published in STAR. Paper also presents political a social environment in Czechoslovak republic after WWI and describes the state of Czech sports journalism in main newspapers. All published issues of Star were analysed to get information to write this thesis, as well as many years of Czech newspapers České slovo, Národní listy, Lidové noviny a Rudé právo and several other books. The findings from this research show a complex view of sports illustrated magazine Star and offer insights into history of Czech sports journalism.
Sport in czechoslovakian daily newspapers between years 1918 and 1928

This diploma thesis deals with the status and development of Czechoslovak sport journalism in daily newspapers between years 1918 and 1928. It is based on studies of five period newspapers - Národní listy, Lidové noviny, Národní politika, Právo lidu and České slovo. Given the paucity of original literature, these five printed materials are the main source of the analysis. The main aim of the thesis was to determine, how often and in which manner the journalists wrote about sport in that period and if the sports news became an inseparable part of newspaper in that period. One part of the analysis focuses on the people who wrote sport articles in those newspapers, if the sport journalism was their only specialization. It is also partly considered with the status of Czech sport photojournalism, sport advertising and reporting from the Olympic Games in that time. The opening three sections of the diploma thesis are mainly theoretical. The first one outlines the genesis of Czech sport journalism from its beginnings to the year 1918, when the profession became an independent branch of newspaper business. Eurosport as the example of the expansion of the sport television channels in the Europe

This bachelor thesis describes and rates the beginnings of the development of the specialized sports television channels in Europe. The main center of interest is pan-european sports channel Eurosport. Shortly is described the development of the symbiotic relationship of the sports and the media. This development is traced from the rise of the first sports magazines and sports rubrics in newspapers, over the development of the sports radio broadcasting, up to the rise of the sports television broadcasting. The thesis interprets the conditions and the causes of the rise of the first European and world's sports television channels. In more detail the conditions of the setting up of the pan-european channel Eurosport and its development from 80th years of the 20th century into present are described. Eurosport is today the sports television channel, which broadcasts in the Europe and also in other continents in quite 20 world's languages. Eurosport has become the pan-european channel with the highest ratings. The thesis also describes the history and the present of the Czech mutation of Eurosport, which has been distributed in the Czech Republic since 1996. Beginnings of czech sport journalism at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. Sport as a part of czech press.

This dissertation is the very first scholarly text to bring a wider perspective on the genesis of Czech sport journalism, starting with its beginnings in the latter half of the 1800's and extending to the year of 1918, when this profession became an independent branch of the newspaper business. Given the paucity of original literature, the present work is based primarily on the study of period newspapers and archival materials, employing mainly the direct and the indirect methods of historiography. The main purpose of it was to describe the formation of the discipline of sport journalism in the broader context of the Czech society, sports and media, rather than regarding it as an independent, isolated process. The constituent parts of this dissertation, which renders the dawn of Czech sport journalism, include the most important titles of the day as well as the key personalities in the publishing and journalism of the period, the issue of sport reportage within the established political press, and also the genesis of the professions of sport journalist and sport photographer. Sports reporting in the countrywide and regional daily paper

The aim of this thesis is the comparison of sport reporting in the countrywide daily Sport and regional dailies Tachovsky and Breclavsky denik. This comparison is under two ways: the first one is a content analysis of these three dailies in a time period of fourteen days, the second one involves the comparison of work of sport journalists in a countrywide daily and regional daily. A content analysis of the sport pages enabled a comparison of dailies among themselves in categories such as number and structure of units, gender of all the units, photos and newspaper's front page, dependence the unit on its time categorization, source of the units, representation of each sport, the sport level of sport represented in units, the structure of sponsors, who are connected with units and so on. This content analysis together with the other theoretical parts of thesis gives an informational background for the qualitative analysis of the variance at sport journalist work in each daily mentioned above. Research has shown that their work is different in many aspects, not only in the area of media routines, prestige, salary, membership in the departmental organizations, but in the relationship with their readers as well. Post-war History and Present of the Czech Sport Press Association

The Czech Sport Press Association is one of the significant and reputable Czech press associations. It was founded in 1923, three years before the foundation of the Czechoslovak Press Syndicate, which is the direct predecessor of the today's most considerable press association in the Czech Republic. At the beginning of this work are depicted the events connected with the foundation of the Czech Sport Press Association against background of formation common press association in our country. Then the main part of the work is focused on characterization of activities of the Czech Sport Press Association, which were closely connected with a similar association in Slovakia. Lastly, in the third part there are characterized changes of the Czech Sport Press Association after 1989 and described its current activities and structure. The work is particularly based on analysis of archival sources from a collection of the Czech Sport Press Association and testimonies of a few auricular witnesses of changes of the association. The ambition of this work is to present this organization to the people, who are interested in the press syndicates, and especially to the current members of the Sport Press Association, who do not know much about its history.

Thesis Stadión magazine in years 1970 - 1993 deals with the sport's magazine Stadión in years 1970 - 1993. It maps political and cultural situation, structure of media market and state of sports at this time period. The thesis focuses on second half of existence of the magazine which had been issued since 1953. It analyses and describes structure of the magazine and changes and graphical aspects of every single section of the magazine. The thesis also deals with editorial team of the magazine and its' economical situation. The thesis as well introduces Olympia Publishing house, the publisher of the Stadión magazine. It describes its' position between other publishing houses. It finds out the relation between ČSTV and publishing house. It also deals with production of books and production of periodic press of the publishing house. In addition to that, this thesis finds out a quantity of political motivated articles and its' relevance to other content of the magazine. Thesis is also trying to find out an effect of the magazine to the readers. All of these findings are put in the context of normalization time period and the time period of the early nineties.

The subject of this thesis - Sports press in Czechoslovakia of late 1980's (published by Olympia publishing house) and its ownership transformation after 1989 - has never been focused on in detail so far. The primary objective of this work is then to describe the sports press published at Olympia, using a historic analysis method, to mention its brief history and its first issuing and to analyze the sports press publishing. The thesis is also focusing on editing activities of individual titles, i.e. the editorial staff financing and a global staff structure within editorial board of sports press.
