Law and Order of the Kingdom of Chosŏn during the 18th Century.
Kubík, Lukáš ; Glomb, Vladimír (advisor) ; Löwensteinová, Miriam (referee)
(in English): Since its foundation, the kingdom of Chosŏn has been culturally and politically connected with the Ming China from which Chosŏn adopted written codes, penal system and administrative structure. At the same time, the legal system of the two states was not identical for various reasons. This differentiation has been increasing over the course of several centuries. The 18th century saw the greatest rise in terms of criminal legislation, and some of today's scholars view this period as the advent of humanism and enlightenment in Korea. This diploma thesis deals with the historical development of criminal law and written codes during the Chosŏn period (14th - 18th century), and with the issue of the Korean state penal system as it was at the end of the 18th century.

Živná, Tereza ; Löwensteinová, Miriam (advisor) ; Zemánek, Marek (referee)
The subject of this bachelor thesis is the life and work of the Korean writer Kang Kyǒng-ae, with a focus on her short prose. The aim of this thesis is an analysis of two works - Salt and Darkness - with attention to the context of the author's time. Nowadays, Kang Kyǒng-ae is considered a significant author of the 1930s and her works reflect the phenomenon of Korean emigrants in Manchuria. For a long time, leftist tendencies caused her prose to be neglected, which resulted in a considerably limited number of studies concerned with her work, in comparison to the number of studies about other writers. There are virtually no Czech studies of her work. The text of the thesis initially presents the timeframe of Kang's authorship and then analyzes select works of hers. The analysis of the works focuses on recurring motifs, which are put into a historical and social context. Keywords Kang Kyǒng-ae, Korean 1930s literature, leftist literature, Sogǔm, Ǒdum

Also, another main focal point of this paper is to offer insight into South Korean media culture, where male homosexuality is becoming a popular theme: this so-called genre is favourited by women that are growing to be the main consumers of homoerotic materials. This subculture and its roots is going to be introduced through Japanese manga. Zemánek, Marek ; Chlup, Radek (advisor) ; Löwensteinová, Miriam (referee) ; Berounský, Daniel (referee)
The aim of the dissertation is to present the complex system of Buddhist rituals of death. Being the first lengthy study on the topic written outside Korea, this work introduces these rituals in the context of the rich Korean religious scene and indicates its connection to other religious and philosophical ideas present in the Sinitic cultural area. The dissertation is structured into five sections, each of which approaches the rituals from a different perspective. The "Introduction," presents the methodology, including the theoretical framework; textual research of ritual texts and fieldwork are the two key methodological approaches used to study the topic at hand. Chapter 2, "The Ritual Constituents," is an attempt to define an apparatus for analysis of the rituals. The two-axis scheme is an attempt to provide a tool, which will help us grasp not only the relative "richness" of the ritual but also its variability. Chapter 3, "The Structure and Typology of the Rituals," presents an overall analysis of the ritual process from the deathbed, to rebirth, and beyond. Its structure is based on contemporary rituals. I also use examples from Korean historical sources to demonstrate that certain types of rituals have been standard ritual activities throughout the history of Korean Buddhism. Chapter 4, "The...
