The Educational Policy of the European Union and the Open Method of Coordination

The diploma thesis deals with the use of the open method of coordination in education policy of the European Union. It views the open method of coordination as a tool based on exchanges of good practice and on mutual learning processes. The aim of this thesis is to determine whether the European Union managed to create an effective coordination mechanism through the open method of coordination in the field where the EU can only intervene to support the action of Member States. Research focuses on the Education and Training 2010/2020 work programme whose origin and implementation is connected to the use of the open method of coordination in education policy. The effectiveness of the open method of coordination in the field of education and training is assessed through two criteria. The thesis examines whether the method contributes to achieving greater convergence towards the main EU goals in education and training and whether it support spreading of good practice between Member States. Possible membership of Turkey to European Union and its economic aspects

This study argues that the slow progress of Turkey in the accession to the European Union is not simlpy due to a failure to comply with the "official" membership criteria. It is argued that European attitude towards these official requirements represents a double standard, which can be searched in the context of unspoken cultural and religious fears, that do not exist in the official criteria. It is argued that there are many positive reasons to Turkey's accession to the EU. There is the aspect of energy- security, demography, acting as a bridge between the West and the East, and keeping the European Union away from being Eurocentric. However, seen the recent developments in Turkey's accession negotiations with the EU, the current political climate in Europe suggests that cultural homogeneity of the European Union remains a strong desire. Turkey, being the "Other", suffers the consequences of this. And while Turkey can make changes to its economy and political system to fulfil the EU's accession criteria, there are two 'givens' that cannot be changed-namely, religion/culture and geography/physical location. Thus, understanding these fixed characteristics of Turkey, and their perception by the European Union is crucially important in understanding the European Union - Turkey process overall.

Economic spill-over of Europeanization: A permissible attack on realism?

Internal Abstract This master thesis's main hypothesis, is attempting to answer if the economic spillover effect of the European Union is a strong enough motive for countries to abandon their traditional realist behavior. In order to analyze and ultimately answer the question, the author employs a combination of qualitative research for the theoretical aspect and a quantitative comparative economic analysis. The qualitative research delves into the motivations and expectation of people prior to joining the EU, compared to after joining the EU. The comparative study attempts to highlight the positive economic spillover from EU membership, revealing how these economic benefits may have altered the nations perception of sovereignty and international relations. The latter part of the thesis is relying on quantitative data from six countries in total, spread evenly between the EU enlargement of 1995 and the one in 2004. The findings do indicate that while the general motivation behind EU membership does include an economic driver. This is also underlined by the comparative case study, which highlights different levels of positive economic developments for the above-mentioned countries, indicating that the economic spillover effect may as well be a valid excuse for countries to abandon their realist mentality and...

From food security to food sustainability: the attitudes of the FAO

Tracing the evolution of the food system paradigm, this research investigates the transition from a narrow focus on food security to a comprehensive food sustainability approach. The study analyses the behaviour of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as source institutions, and their potential influence on the Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) strategies in addressing global food security challenges. Spanning from 1990 to 2019, the research examines key official documents from the institutions and relevant literature to unravel the interconnectedness between these institutions and FAO's paradigm shift. The findings shed light on the complex dynamics and interactions of international institutions and their role in shaping sustainable development policies within the food security realm.

International Organisation for Migration and African Union and their actions towards sustainable development in East Africa

This thesis focuses on the African Union (AU) and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), analysing their respective roles in implementing sustainable development in East Africa from 2015 to 2020. The essential research questions investigate how international organisations influence the process of socialisation and the acceptance of norms related to climate change, migration, and sustainable development. Furthermore, this research uses concepts of social constructivism, such as the norm cycle and socialisation, and outlines the two organisations approaches to regional actors in East Africa. In this qualitative analysis, a case-study approach is adopted to help understand how different international organisations promote norms related to the same topics in the same region. To conduct the investigation, documents published by both international organisations are examined using critical discourse analysis. The results showed that the International Organisation for Migration draws attention to the positive contribution of migration to sustainable development and the living conditions of migrants. France's Influence on Its Former Colonies: A Case Study of Morocco and Algeria

This diploma thesis examines the topic of France's influence on its former colonies. Using the example of Algeria and Morocco, analyzes what influence France has on its former colonies at the present time, whether the influence persists, and whether this relationship can be characterized as a form of neocolonialism. Using the analysis of the relationship of the two selected countries with France, and the subsequent analysis of cooperation in four selected areas, the work examines and compares whether the possible influence of the former colonizer on the selected countries is the same, or whether it is different (eventually what are the reasons for the asymmetry of the ongoing relations in favor of one of the countries). The work is based on the theories of realism, which considers power to be the core of international relations, and in this case it is not hard power, but rather soft power. Other main important theories are colonialism and neocolonialism, as the countries were long time under French colonial rule, as well as orientalism or dependency theory, which also deals with the topic of influence. Changes in Japan-South Korea Relations in the Context of the Current Trade War

This thesis examines the trade war between South Korea and Japan, which began in the summer of 2019. The dispute has a complex history that partly explains the inevitability of the conflict: Japan is still coming to terms with its colonial past, while South Korea is struggling to forgive the war crimes it committed and is waiting for an official apology. Despite the long- standing disagreements between the two countries, South Korea and Japan remain key allies of the US, which is watching the whole trade war with great concern, especially because of the potential danger from North Korea, which confirms the global impact of this trade war. It is thus in the best interests of the United States to resolve the conflict quickly. Crucially, both Japan and South Korea are using the dispute to adopt hostile historicism as a key resource in the political game: using it to legitimize their own objectives. The aim of this thesis will therefore be to answer the question of what preceded the trade war between South Korea and Japan and what are the reasons for the deterioration of bilateral relations. The Impact of Neoliberal Reforms on Latin American Population

Neoliberalism evokes strong reactions in the minds of both its proponents and detractors. With the so-called second Pink Tide washing over Latin America recently and the growing rejection of the legacy of neoliberalism in countries like Chile, many academics have started proclaiming it dead and outlived. Yet there are still those who defend its legacy and claim it should have gone much further. This thesis critically engages with these arguments using both theoretical and empirical arguments that point to the inherent contradictions baked in the neoliberal theory, its flawed assumptions, as well as the high social costs that neoliberal reforms inflict on the populations affected by them. Additionally, it explores the historical development of neoliberalism during the Pinochet rule and its transformation after the 1982 crisis in Chile, which has famously been called the "lab of neoliberalism" and was long used as a model for economic development by many mainstream economists and international financial institutions.

Prioritization of the Chairman's Roles in the European Union: A Comparison of the Behaviour of the 2022 French and Czech Presidencies in the Field of Environmental Policy

The roles played by Council presidencies are a pertinent area to study, yet it has been insufficiently explored. The Czech Republic has recently experienced its second presidency in the Council which ended in December 2022. It has followed the French presidency, the first state of the same trio. This gives us a unique occasion to study the prioritization of chairman's roles by comparing the behaviour of these two members of one trio presidency presidencies at all levels of the Council for Environment. The legislative files in environmental area were intensively negotiated during the French and Czech presidencies, especially the "Fit for 55" package. Based on the theories on specific activities connected to each role of presidency (political leader, mediator, manager and representant), we analyse these roles and the way by which the consecutive French and Czech presidencies have played them in environmental field. We compare the role prioritization of these chairmen based on the weight attached to individual roles (except for the representant role) by the presidencies.
