Modelling of Maříž: About the formation of contemporary local identities in a selected border village
Chmelař, Hugo ; Kreisslová, Sandra (advisor) ; Jakoubková Budilová, Lenka (referee)
The thesis deals with the construction of local identities in the border village of Maříž. The research was conducted in the form of semi-structured and biographical interviews, from which the data collected was explored through narrative analysis. The narrators approached included primarily permanent residents of the village as well as a wider circle of occasional residents who either had deeper ties to the place or were involved in village life. Aside from the current situation, the interviews were directed to the region's past, either to the expulsion of the original German inhabitants or the reality of the past regime that resulted in Maříž being closed off behind the national border fence. In the analysis of the narratives, the thesis explores the relationships and interpretation of these key formative events of the place. There is also a particular focus on the physical imprints of historical turbulences on the local landscape, in the example of the state border and the Maříž Castle as sites of memory. As a result of the analysis, the place was found to have developed a certain core identity over the last thirty years of its development, which works strongly with identification with the place and, although it does not take a form of a classic village community, has the potential for future continuity....

Rybáková, Bohumíra ; Janeček, Petr (advisor) ; Kreisslová, Sandra (referee)
The Harry Potter saga by the British author J. K. Rowling became a worldwide phenomenon soon after its publication. As its popularity grew at the turn of the millennium, a fan base began to form, and its ranks expanded in the wake of the film adaptation that followed not long after. The thesis focuses on contemporary young Czech fans of Harry Potter, representatives of the so-called Generation Z, and their participation in the fandom of this work on the social network Instagram. The aim of the thesis, theoretically based primarily on fandom studies, is to answer the questions of how Generation Z comes to the world of Harry Potter, what meanings it holds for them, what the motivations for their participation in the fandom are, and what form this participation takes. The research is based on data collected through semi-structured interviews with Czech Harry Potter fans who self-identify as Generation Z, were born within a certain generational cohort (from the second half of the 1990s to the end of the first decade of the new century), and participate on the social network Instagram. Furthermore, participant observation in Great Britain was conducted during April 2023. The results of the research reveal that fans who self-identify as Generation Z were introduced to the fictional world of Harry Potter...

Czech Palermo?: Rumors and contemporary legends of Pribram as part of the collective identity of inhabitants of the Pribram region
Drapáková, Anna ; Janeček, Petr (advisor) ; Kreisslová, Sandra (referee)
The city of Příbram earned the nickname "Czech Palermo" mainly due to the events of the 1990s related to the activities of organized crime, black and grey economy, especially corruption and other, often still unexplained, criminal activities. This master's thesis aims to reveal, through documentation, analysis, and interpretation of rumors, contemporary legends, memorates, and other collectively spread narratives related to the 1990s, the influence of these local narratives on the shaping of the identity of the inhabitants of Příbram and its surroundings. This will be done by taking into account the context of the historical development of the Příbram region. Firstly, the thesis raises the question of whether the industrial history of this area and its subsequent notorious association with criminal events have a diachronic connection to the creation of the current identity and how the dynamic relationship between the "mining" and "mafia" collective identity of Příbram works. Furthermore, the most commonly occurring collective narratives, which form an integral part of the identity of the inhabitants of Příbram and its surroundings, are analyzed in detail, including their attitudes towards them. The method of data documentation includes semi- structured interviews, narrative interviews, and archival...
Death and burial among Czech expats in Serbian Banat
Hermanová, Viktorie ; Jakoubková Budilová, Lenka (advisor) ; Kreisslová, Sandra (referee)
This thesis discusses a perception of death among Czech expats living in Serbian Banat. History of Czech migration to Banat started in 19th century after the war with Ottoman Empire, when the land was given to settlers from all territories of Habsburg monarchy. Nowadays Banat territory is divided between the countries of Serbia and Romania. Czechs differ from Serbs mostly in their language and catholic faith. Thesis is based on data collected during two expeditions of the Institute of Ethnology CU FA to the municipalities of Bela Crkva, Češko Selo and Kruščica. During the first expedition in 2021 the photos of Czech graves were taken on local catholic cemeteries. During the second expedition in 2022 interviews with the expats were recorded on the topic of funerals, dying and faith. The main research questions were: How Czech expats perceive death and dying? What are the differences between funerals in the past and present? What is the role of the dead in the lives of the living? For data analysis the thesis uses P. Ariès' theory of tamed death, A. Gell's theory of objects' secondary agency and the theory of deathscapes. Tamed death is a death without a taboo, death that is familiar and the actors can prepare for it. The opposite is wild death. Expats speak very openly about the topic. Their image...

Contemporary handicraft of small producers and strategies of interaction with their consumers
Jarolím, Jakub ; Jakoubek, Marek (advisor) ; Kreisslová, Sandra (referee)
This work is focused on craftsmanship performed by individual craftsmen or by small companies. The author is a leatherworker by his profession and therefore he is an insider in this field. The paper is considering relationships between manufacturers of craft goods and consumers of these goods. These relationships are not just determined by price and utility value of products, but also by symbolic value of these artifacts in the first place. Relationships between manufacturers and consumers include a lot of rituals. Artifacts are usually deemed "traditional" by manufactures and also by consumers. The concept of tradition is commodified and used as a marketing tool in order to increase profit. There is a lot of clichés in the studied field, such as the national myth of "golden Czech hands" or about mythical person of Tomáš Baťa. Important princip how to establish relationships between manufactuers and consumers is geographical distance. Manufactuers set boundaries between each other and if there is someone who is not holding line of traditional craftsman procedure firmly, this wrongdoer can became ritually unclean. Another important principle crucial to set up good relationships between consumers and manufacturers is sustainable development principle. There is a lot of cooperation between different...

This Master's diploma thesis elaborates on the history of Odry region, particularly the period after World War II, when it underwent a significant transformation. The goal od the thesis is to do a thorough micro-historical research of the postwar history of the region with respect to the transformation of the formerly German areas into the reclaimed lands of the Czech nation. It is divided into several chapters. In the first chapter I evaluate the source base to the topic; I investigate various literature related to the transfer of the Germans and the frontier settlement (its regional provenance being taken into account), archival sources and narratives - memories of displaced Germans from the presently analyzed region and several examples of the recorded oral-history interviews. In other six chapters I elucidate the situation of the Odry region in particular periods: in 1938, during World War II, and in the era of the liberation, followed by the transfer of the German population and the process of a new habitation. The last chapter then discusses the postwar Odry region as a home both lost and obtained. The paper provides insight into the postwar transformation of the Odry region in the period after the World War II perusing primarily the memories of those who were directly involved. Key words the...
