Ritual Purity and Impurity among the Gypsies
Krčková, Anna ; Řezáčová, Vendula (advisor) ; Martinová, Marta (referee)
In this thesis author deals with theme of the ritual purity and impurity among the Gypsies. Concept of ritual purity and impurity brought to anthropology Mary Douglas. Her approach became important tool to research Gypsy groups. Ritual impurity represents specific irrational quality, which influences social status of the individual or group and social relationships. It creates fundamental border between Gypsies and non-Gypsies and inter-communal hierarchy. Ritual im/purity these borders define clearly, but Gypsies cross and shift them. Within the families, this concept maintains inequality between men and women. Following chapter shows examples that go against mainstream interpretation of im/purity. Ritual purity is being kept by three instruments - Gypsy court, social control and fear of dead souls. Finally author compares Douglas's theory with concrete concept of purity and impurity among Gypsies.
Framing the Great March of Return in Czech online media
Krčková, Anna ; Láb, Filip (advisor) ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with coverage of the Great March of Return event in selected Czech online media (Aktuálně.cz, Echo24, Haló noviny, iDNES, iRozhlas, Lidovky, Novinky.cz). Demonstrations erupted in early March of 2018, with the goal of returning Palestinians to their historical territories of Israel. The theoretical part of this thesis deals with concept of framing and also expands on the often neglected visual framing. It then covers role of war photography in the media, addresses crisis of photojournalism and provides historical and political context of the Great March of Return. The research part uses concept of framing and aims to analyze way in which Czech online media interpreted researched Israeli-Palestinian conflict. For a more comprehensive insight into this issue, thesis deals with both verbal and textual content, which is examined at the same time or compared with each other. For the possibility of testing different perspectives, diploma thesis uses both quantitative and qualitative framing methods.
The design process, digitization and promotion of font
Krčková, Anna ; Khabirova, Maja (advisor) ; Horný, Stanislav (referee)
This thesis focuses on the development, production and font digitization. It examines how far one must understand the matter and how important is it to know the historical backround of typography so he would be able to create high-quality font, both for personal or commercial use. It also defines what parameters determine high-quality font and how to recognize high-quality font. In the practical part there will be introduced principles and programs for creating fonts that are currently widely used and will be presented possibilities of promoting and selling fonts. The aim is to compare the pros and cons of self made font so whoever deals with this issue could evaluate whether it is worth investing time in creating font or not, and eventually was able to design basic alphabet.
Bayesian Statistics - Limits and its Application in Sociology
Krčková, Anna ; Soukup, Petr (advisor) ; Hendl, Jan (referee)
The purpose of this thesis is to find how we can use Bayesian statistics in analysis of sociological data and to compare outcomes of frequentist and Bayesian approach. Bayesian statistics uses probability distributions on statistical parameters. In the beginning of the analysis in Bayesian approach a prior probability (that is chosen on the basis of relevant information) is attached to the parameters. After combining prior probability and our observed data, posterior probability is computed. Because of the posterior probability we can make statistical conclusions. Comparison of approaches was made from the view of theoretical foundations and procedures and also by means of analysis of sociological data. Point estimates, interval estimates, hypothesis testing (on the example of two-sample t-test) and multiple linear regression analysis were compared. The outcome of this thesis is that considering its philosophy and thanks to the interpretational simplicity the Bayesian analysis is more suitable for sociological data analysis than common frequentist approach. Comparison showed that there is no difference between outcomes of frequentist and objective Bayesian analysis regardless of the sample size. For hypothesis testing we can use Bayesian credible intervals. Using subjective Bayesian analysis on...
