Adjectives formed from the infinitive/past verb stem by the suffix -c(í) in Old Czech and Middle Czech

Mgr. Irena Fuková Adjektiva tvořená od infinitivního/minulého slovesného kmene příponou -c(í) v češtině staré a v češtině doby střední Adjectives formed from the infinitive/past verb stem by the suffix -c(í) in Old Czech and Middle Czech Abstract The thesis is devoted to the analysis of adjectives formed from the infinitive/past verb stem by the suffix -c(í) in Old Czech and Middle Czech. It describes the development of this word-forming subsystem in the period under study. It focuses mainly on the meanings of its units, the representation of individual word-formation categories, the question of the degree of its meaning distinction, especially in comparison with participial adjectives, and the determination of the time of its origin. Adjectives derived from the infinitive/past verb stem with the suffix -c(í) can be identified only partially on the basis of their form in Old Czech sources, since due to ambiguous writing and ongoing spelling changes they merge in some cases with participial adjectives or adjectives ending in - č(í). Therefore, the aim of this thesis is also to reconstruct the supposed system of adjectives derived by the suffix -c(í) in the Old Czech and Middle Czech period. The fact of partial formal ambiguity of the type of adjectives under study implies a basic procedure for the analysis...

Forming and development of non-stem declension typepíseň (song)
Vajdlová, Miloslava ; Dittmann, Robert (advisor) ; Pleskalová, Jana (referee) ; Komárek, Karel (referee)
The present work deals with the process of forming a new, non-stem declension type píseň (song) in historical Czech and with its formation and further development from the Old Czech period over the humanist and baroque time, the period of the national revival and the post- revival era up to the beginning of the 20th century. It dwells on determination of causes of the origins of this declension type, the time when the new declension constitutes approximately, on the characterization of the subsequent development of the new declension type and its division into periods. It also determines factors influencing the declension stability or instability of names affected by the process of forming the new type. The thesis also includes description and analysis of long-term historical development of individual groups of nouns, which are involved in the formation of the new declension type. Last but not least, it submits an overview whether and how selected historical period grammars and grammar handbooks (from the humanist and baroque period) reflect the new declension type.
Peripheral Units of the Old Czech Lexical System: Retreating Units
Nejedlý, Petr ; Kučera, Karel (advisor) ; Pleskalová, Jana (referee) ; Komárek, Karel (referee)
Petr Nejedlý: Peripheral Units of the Old Czech Lexical System: Retreating Units (abstract of the thesis) The thesis deals with Old Czech lexical units retreating from the centre to periphery of the lexical system. It examines prerequisites of the process, i.e. loss of systemic relations of the lexical unit, and describes its individual forms (the extinction of a lexical unit in the last resort). The work submits an overview of both (intra)linguistic and extra-linguistic factors which are based on development of the lexical unit and influence its retreat to the periphery. Attention is paid to systemic changes in the language which modify internal relationships within the lexical system and also lead to the loss of central position of some lexical units.

Abstract The traditional view describing Czech literary works written in the period from the late 17th century to the end of 18th century as signs of decline in the level of Czech language and literature has been successfully overcome by linguists over the past few decades. However, most papers covering the topic were focused on prints; handwritten sources are being analysed marginally and unsystematically. The aim of this dissertation is to provide a more...

Word-formation analysis of Bohemian minor place-names
Štěpán, Pavel ; Harvalík, Milan (advisor) ; Krško, Jaromír (referee) ; Komárek, Karel (referee)
minor place-names from the territory of Bohemia. The parts devoted to the analysis of substantival and adjectival lexical units are divided into three sections dealing with suffixation, prefixal-sufixal forrnation and compounding. It has been necessary to approach the analysis of lexical the units forrned by suffixation selectively. The classification oflexical units formed by a certain mode become (in a majority of chapters) a starting point for the analysis of motivation of the individual minor place-names. The forrnation using the chosen word-forrnative devices is analysed on the background of the forrnation in the common-noun sphere of the language. One of the main aims of the thesis is to grasp the wordforrnative specificities in which the material of minor place-names differs from the common-noun sphere of the language. The analysis confirrns that so-called parasystemic means of word forrnation are typical of minor place names (as well as the whole proper-name sphere of the language). These means (mainly suffixes) are either not present in the commonnoun sphere (e.g. -čice, -ec1, or their typical function is different in common nouns (-ství, -inka). ln certain instances, the word-forrnation analysis conducted in this work may influence the interpretation of individual place names. This is due to the...

A Comprehensive Study of The Dzikowian Manuscript Focusing on a Graphic, Language and Textual Analysis of the Czech Postil

Mgr. Andrea Svobodová Komplexní studium Rukopisu dzikovského se zam ením na grafickou, jazykovou a textovou analýzu eské sbírky kázání A Comprehensive Study of The Dzikowian Manuscript Focusing on a Graphic, Language and Textual Analysis of the Czech Postil Abstract The thesis submits a comprehensive philological analysis of the Dzikowian Manuscript, an insufficiently explored late medieval manuscript containing two postils, de tempore in Latin and de sanctis in Old Czech. The thesis aims to specify the place of this work in the context of medieval preaching, to critically review the previous research and to find new paths of research in evaluating this work. It is divided into three chapters, their common topic being attribution of both the postils on the grounds of codicological, content, and especially language features. Special emphasis is put on description of non-standard language phenomena, their interpretation being a key factor for transcription rules (one of the main results achieved apart from precising probable dating and localisation is a complete transcription of the Old Czech postil). The phenomena described enrich the existing inventory of deviations from the standard language and call for relating to other sources traditionally categorised as dialectal and thus for elaborating diachronic...
