Relations between the Taliban and al-Qaeda between 1996 and 2001
Kovařík, Tomáš ; Koláček, Jakub (advisor) ; Kříhová, Zuzana (referee)
The Taliban and al-Qaeda are groups that profess radical forms of Islam and are often mentioned in connection with terrorism (the latter is one of the most well-known terrorist organizations). In the period 1996-2001, both groups were deployed to Afghanistan. The Taliban ruled Afghanistan during those years, and al Qaeda had the status of a kind of "guest". As a result of the 9/11 attacks of al- Qaeda, the United States launched Operation Enduring Freedom. As part of this operation, the Taliban movement was removed from the government and al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden was forced to flee Afghanistan and hide until his death in 2011. The aim of my work will be to describe the development and functioning of relations between the two organizations in the period preceding these events. Why did Osama bin Laden move to Afghanistan? Why did the Taliban allow it? What were the relations between the two organizations? How was the cooperation between them? In addition to sharing a common territory, did this cooperation have other, ie economic, military and political aspects? Was the relationship between them a perfect harmony of political and religious views, or was it rather a pragmatic relationship that was not ideal but benefited both actors? The analysis of these relationships will be based on available...

Identity, Capitalism and Aesthetics in Invisible Man
Kovařík, Tomáš ; Delbos, Stephan (advisor) ; Roraback, Erik Sherman (referee)
While conventional readings of Invisible Man primarily focus on its status as a race-critical novel, this BA thesis will discuss and develop the notion that the novel is in fact an experimental Bildungsroman whose narrator is a universal figure and whose development across the narrative is analogical to that of any person building their identity in today's late capitalist society. By analyzing key moments in the novel with the help of late-20th -century and contemporary critical, cultural and political theories, the text will arrive at an original reading that synthesizes those approaches, and which can be used to better understand even contemporary life. The first chapter will establish what precisely makes the text an experimental coming-of-age novel by introducing the genre's conventions that started in German Romanticism with Goethe, and will then trace these features and their distinctive emergences in Invisible Man. The second chapter will then consist of an analysis of the social system as it is presented in the novel, exploring the oppressive capitalist power structure that both requires and prevents the narrator's assimilation, and highlighting how specific characters in the novel cling to their power with no regard for the experience of others. This will be supported by theories and...
Machine learning-based approaches to forecasting international trade
Kovařík, Tomáš ; Semerák, Vilém (advisor) ; Macháček, Vít (referee)
In this thesis I focus on comparison of gravity model estimated with ordinary least squares and Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood with regression techniques based on machine learning, namely support vector machines, random forests, and arti_cial neural networks. I discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these approaches and compare their forecasting accuracy on exports data. I demonstrate that random forest models and arti_cial neural networks provide superior forecasting accuracy.

Model of communication system with the PLC channel
Kovařík, Tomáš ; Krajsa, Ondřej (referee) ; Mlýnek, Petr (advisor)
The aim of this work was to develop a model of a communication system with the PLC channel. The model contains different types of modulations with the possibility of their settings. The impact of a disturbance on different numbers of states QAM modulation has been evaluated. The theoretical part describes the PLC technology with its functions and the most widely used narrowband modulation.

Evaluation of listening tests for subjective assessment of audio quality
Kovařík, Tomáš ; Míča, Ivan (referee) ; Rášo, Ondřej (advisor)
The point of this thesis was to perform listening tests. Appropriate methods of performance were selected for these tests, tests were carried out and the data were analyzed using statistical analysis. Then was compiled the resulting interval scale from results of the first test and in the second listening test were determined average values SNR for background noises.
